Joe Arpaio Releases Memo Defending His Pricey Security Detail

MCSO
Sheriff Joe Arpaio, after the sidewalk outside of his office nearly assassinated him.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio released an internal MCSO memo in an attempt to defend his pricey security detail.

According to the guys "protecting" Arpaio from a series of not-so-credible death threats, everything they do is completely necessary for the sheriff's safety. Then again, most people would say whatever the hell they have to in order to defend being paid as much as $24,000 in overtime in a year.

-10 Most Bogus "Death Threats" Against Joe Arpaio

The memo's release was in response to an Arizona Republic article last week reporting overtime costs for Arpaio's security detail "have increased dramatically in the past year."

Overtime costs from June 2012 to June 2013 totaled more than $120,000, according to the Republic's report.

That seems excessive, especially since some of these "death threats" are just plain made up.

There's never been a single shred of evidence that there ever was a bounty on Arpaio's head placed by a drug cartel. Perhaps the most credible plot against Arpaio was the one set up by the MCSO itself (which eventually yielded a settlement for the man used as a pawn in the plot).

The only injuries Arpaio's sustained on the job are a bruised ego, handed down by a federal judge in the racial-profiling case against Arpaio, and a sidewalk outside his office that was too much for the elderly sheriff to handle, as he slipped and landed in the hospital.

Most of the "death threats" busted up are people far away from Maricopa County, who say mean things on the Internet. We couldn't tell you the last time there was any indication of intent in any of these cases.

Yet, here's this memo from a pair of guys on the "Sheriff's security/threats management" squad, defending the overtime pay.

Among other things, Deputy Patrick Lazzari and Detective Thomas Rossi claim Arpaio "continues to receive threats to this day based solely on his time with the DEA," which would mean someone's been holding in a grudge for at least, what, 30 years?

"The truth is that we cannot speak for the law enforcement agencies that provide security for other elected officials," the memo states. "We do not know nor are we making judgments on their staffing, needs, pay rates, overtime, etc. Our sole purpose for writing you this open letter and in responding to the article written by the Republic comes down to one thing......pride."

Read the whole gushy letter on the next page.

if the old fellow's the toughest sheriff in the country let him prove it and have him defend himself instead of using taxpayer dollars.

Joe could save taxpayer money if he dropped a dime to his pal Hendershott and requested a SWAT team from the Bahama Law Enforcement authority since the taxpayers paid for that training. And he can call back Steven Segal to be senior commander with Chuck Norris as OPS chief. They are already deputized.

To save even more money, he can deputize Shak with his Gold Bond gig to rub ointment on Joe's flat, fat ass to keep it supple and soft.

Facts?...OK...lets start with election results. Did Penzone..or ANYONE have more votes?....No?...OK, see...that means he was elected to the position....in other words....the "people" elected him - - AGAIN....I get it, your panties are twisted because you lost- again - ....Most his detractors find their fight with his immigration stance...I understand that - the media driven description of "Arizona Latinos" - can be equated with the Tea Party and moderate Republicans, as the one group is split. There are far too many "Latinos" that actually support Arpaios' immigration policy. Get that group "together", then you're 20 yr odyssey might come to fruition....I have the feeling there won't be a Sherrif named anything otherthan Arpaio - until he decides to retire.......he is getting up there....

Why the hell does the heinous old man need so much security?

Obama, while I consider him to be one of the 5 worst presidents in history, does need security. He does face credible threats and is almost always in imminent danger.

OSB, on the other hand, doesn't need any security. Especially considering what he and Candy Andy did to all those people during the Maricopa County War.

Forget politics.  Forget arguments with the Feds.  Forget the needs of the people.  WHO ELECTS AN 81 YEAR OLD SHERIFF to provide law enforcement to one of the nation's 10 largest metropolitan areas?

Seriously, voters.  He's 81. Of course he needs drivers.  He need minders everywhere he goes.  After the age of 65, the skills one needs to drive safely begin to deteriorate in every person.  By the time a man is over 80 his reaction time is shot, his reflexes are impaired, he has trouble making decisions quickly, he has trouble with directions and estimating distances, he has experienced serious changes in hearing and vision.  Most elderly people are also taking medication that effects their brain functions.

A long, serious study done by Carnegie Mellon University and funded by the AAA Foundation found that the average 80-year-old woman had a driving ability almost identical to a teenaged boy with very little driving experience.  The same study showed that once they reach 85, elders have a traffic fatality rate nearly FOUR TIMES HIGHER than that for teens.  And most of those people aren't driving with a firearm strapped to their body.

I don't care how spry your grandpa is or how sharp your grandma is.  They don't have any business being sheriff of a county of 3.8 million people!   Neither does Joe Arpaio.  The voters are crazy to pay for it, let alone pay EXTRA for it.

Sappy memo, really. "superfluous amount of threats".... defined: 1. being more than is sufficient or required; excessive.

So, I guess the detail would be glad to deal with fewer threats?

I've done VIP security on a national and international scale. This local shurf is just that. One of fifteen in the state. He is NOT an international law enforcement official.

Simply an elected official. A mentally ill elected official.

We all know that for "security reasons", the Joker no longer drives.  Ever since that incident where the boulder in the drug store parking lot jumped out in front of his county car, and the car was totaled.

I think that the boulder was ground up and made into concrete, and it cracked and then again tried to get him when he was walking back from lunch!

Dang those rock related threats!

It would b interesting if they would release a list of d threats that the OLD FUCK has received over d years, even more interesting would b 2 know about those threats that he's  been receiving from his days as a DEA agent even after so much time has passed since, after all, if they r real. there shouldn't b any issue on releasing a list of all those threats.

I'm surprised that the OLD FART hasn't cry about d threat that these security team wrote about on d open letter, since they stated; "Interestingly enough, as we sit down this morning to write this letter, we just received a new, direct threat to Sheriff Arpaio and his family".....?????.

Hopefully d Monitor look into all this 24/7 security bullshit and expose any wrondoings, since everything around this RACIST POS comes down 2 MONEY. TAXPAYER'S MONEY!!!!

honestly, i have no problem with paying for the security of Arpaio, Obama or any of the other people i DIDNT vote for. they are elected officials who are supposed to be protected as deemed necessary. sure i believe Joe is imagining himself to be in danger 24/7, but it doesnt mean there are no real threats out there. they should be allowed the same security i would want for people that i did vote for

Oh so you Arpaio's personal security is a joke huh?  Well then go ahead and act stupid because if you do you are going to get shot and it will be lethal.

@danzigsdaddy

Agreed but overtime for 24x7 security???

How hard is it to do x amount of hours in a week, x number of deputies = a budget for a static resource??? Why the overtime??

The Secret Service does a hell of a lot more than any of Joes security does and yet they manage to do a budget and stick to it without agent overtime..

Why can't Joe?

Hey Robert, where is that subpoena you said you were going to deliver to me for saying that in my opinion you are a child molester who likes little boys according to all the web sites you own.

If you like guys Robert that is fine, to each their own, but underage boys Robert? What's wrong, is that the only way you can 'measure up' is against little boys??

C'Mon Robert, serve me my subpoena, I want to see what one written in crayon looks like.

@yourproductsucks2People don't seem to think it's prejudicial to tell fat people they are statistically more likely to die of heart attacks or diabetes than thin people.  So why is it wrong for me to say 80-year-olds are statistically more likely to KILL ME when they are behind the wheel of a car?

@Flyer9753 @danzigsdaddy Wash cars? Grocery shopping? Picking up dry cleaning? Plain old drudge work having nothing to do with looking out for Joe? That must be his why security detail is costing so much.

I never said the US SS doesn't pay overtime. That's you making an assumption and taking a comment deliberately out of context.

There you go again, trying to put words in others mouths so you can have an argument... go argue with yourself until you learn how to have a discussion based on reality, not your made up fantasy.
