Is John McCain a "Reagan Republican," as He Claims to Be?

Senator John McCain, trying to win back some of the right-wingers who've been mad at him lately, claims he's a "Reagan Republican."

The definition of "Reagan Republican" appears to be open to interpretation.

McCain -- who may or may not be considering a reelection bid in 2016 -- was not a fan of the Republican plan to shut down the federal government in some sort of attempt to defund Obamacare, and has even written an editorial in the Arizona Republic explaining just that.

That hasn't earned him any extra friends among the hardcore right-wingers, especially after McCain tried to tell some of them that he's a "Reagan Republican."

Loving Ronald Reagan is one of the Ten Commandants in the Republican Bible, so it looks like there's some disagreement over what a "Reagan Republican" is.

For example, one local Republican blogger said in response to McCain's claim, "John McCain shows himself as not only a liberal hack, but also a practiced liar."

Back on the 2008 campaign trail, McCain was asked whether Reagan would endorse him -- McCain said he believed he would.

"Ronald Reagan would not approve of someone who changes their positions depending on what the year is," McCain, the "build the dang fence" fan turned immigration-reform advocate, said.

However, those Reagan-loving Republicans did once pick McCain to be the President of the United States, you know.

What's your opinion? Would you call McCain a "Reagan Republican"?

For one John McCain is a war hungry, warmonger that wants to start a nuclear war. Reagan certainly wasn't the best president but he was a heck of a lot better than McCain. Reagan always showed respect to people with opposing views, Where McCain feels that he must insult those people with his immature name calling. All this hatred in politics started with John McCain, not being able to accept the fact that the American people did not want the old warmonger as president. His sore loser attitude started it all

The fallacy of Ronald Reagan.

When did this start?  Was it after we had two very bad GOP presidents that they called back on old Ronny?

Ronald Raygun was the first person to prove the president simply is an actor and nothing more.

I lived in the 80s but I couldn't vote yet. There was no transformational change that occurred, we had Ollie North on TV!

No, I'd call Barack Obama a Reagan Republican.  I'd call McCain "Nixonian."

You can tell a lot about someone from their heroes. Reagan was a guy that declared the USSR was evil incarnate, ramped up the Cold War even further and brought us closer to complete annihilation. Judging from McCain's saber rattling at Iran, Syria and any other country that's not bought and paid for by the U.S., why these two megalomaniacs are like peas in a pod!

Which also includes Reagan. Why anyone would want to be like a guy who exacerbated the War on Drugs and invaded Grenada is beyond me.

I always thought Reagan is a Republican Party icon.

McCain is more like Mitt Romney... He should act more like TR, my favorite Republican president.

Maybe he is, is that what's fashionable with the GOP right now?

"Reagan Republican" is a term that the GOP came up with after the embarrassment of Bush 1 and Bush 2. It's just their way of disassociating themselves from the worst presidents we've ever had.

Let's not forget that Reagan:

-was a union president

-gave amnesty to millions of "illegals"

-signed the largest tax increase in history

-signed a ban on fully auto weapons

-tripled the national debt

-suffered from dementia while in office

No one in the GOP that knows actual history would want to claim to be like Reagan.  Good thing the wingnuts IGNORE history!  Maybe McCain is saying he's just like Reagan as far as the "dementia" thing!

If a Regan Republican must be a an old, out of touch loser and douche, then he is one.

@Robin Scott Andress  McCain is a McCain Republican, he only cares about himself. John McCain will say anything or do anything as long as it's beneficial to John McCain and John McCain only

It's lucky for me that I was born during Reagan's second term and had no idea what was going on.

-Grant also gave amnesty to the Confederates.

-I thought it was Wilson who signed the largest tax increase (the Revenue Act of 1913 and the 16th Amendment come to mind)

-Clinton signed a fully auto weapons ban

-The national debt has been growing since Martin Van Buren

-Suffering from dementia sounds like the Clown Sheriff of MCSO.

-And I thought TR was also a union president.

Yup, lucky for me I'm a Reagan era child WhoKnows.

@WhoKnows

Most people in the GOP recall that Reagan was a Democrat before he became a Republican.   Most Republicans are also not as dogmatic as those you hear about most often these days, and actually understand why Reagan did those things at the time.

@MaskedMagician1967 Liberals are supposed to sign weapons bans Conservatives would not.

Ole Ronny would be a RINO by today's standards.
