How Long Should the State Foot the Bill for the Grand Canyon?

The Grand Canyon is now open -- for a few more days, at least.

The state and the National Park Service came to an agreement for the state to fund operations of the park for seven days, at a cost of $93,000 per day.

The governor's office said in a statement that they would "continue to assess next steps if the federal shutdown has not ended in those seven days."

Here's our question this morning: How long should the state foot the bill, if there's no end to the federal shutdown?

It's a hole in the ground. Can't we treat it like a park? Play at your own risk.

While the national park is closed, there are other access points to the canyon owned and operated by Native American communities. The government shut down has been a boon to their economy. (Been talking about it on the news.)

How about we just keep paying rangers to do their jobs, which would come out to like 1,000,000 a year for 33 rangers to keep people safe as opposed to 93,000 a day... Amiright?

The government can close a canyon, but can't get Ted Cruz to shut up?

Hey when you have over a hundred jackasses wandering around the Grand Canyon what do you expect? get my drift...

The companies that are making profits need to pay the majority of the upkeep. They are the ones drawing in the tourists and they are the ones making the money. Taxes and fees are not going to cut it if we are paying $93,000 a day. Time for companies to ante up and if they already are, they need to ante up more.

I agree - there is a waiting list for most of the cabins, hotels and other activities and they aren't free. The tourism is huge there.

The state shouldn't, the federal government shut down. Let the consequence play out and stop enabling their (governments) poor behavior.

Shit! How did it cope for the last million or so years!?

Why aren't we managing it ourselves in the first place? Does some guy who's never seen it 3000 miles away know what's best for our own resource? It's an AZ site, which means it should be ran, and profited from, by AZ.

Missing people? Happens all the time and we deal with it. Garbage? People can pack out their own trash. Rail repairs? The railway is owned by a private company. Blinders not needed. Just common sense.

Wait a minute, doesn't the State Nag keep reminding everyone that Arizona is BROKE? Where is this money coming from?

It's just a dang Canyon and it belongs to us. It doesn't need 90% of the support services the government claims. Close the lodge and leave the rest of it open. The private sector will continue to support the tourists.

Sure, but people who've, say, gotten lost on the trail without water won't survive without human intervention for long.

It's funny how shitty ass Republicans are crying about this, they don't give two shits about that hole in the ground, bunch of lame propaganda. Stupid old farts!

Jan is just using taxpayer money to make Republicans look a little kinder. Close it back down and let the Rs foot the bill or take the heat.

I do realize that, and do you know what would happen now to the Grand Canyon if decedents of Europeans were left to their own devices? That thing would be a uranium mine and stripped away...

DjAdidas Nick Nuvamsa

Do u relize that before europeans came here it didn't cost a penny to go see or hike the grand canyon? Natives took care of the land, and didn't do jt for money.

Stop paying people to watch for idiots climbing and jumping for one. Pay someone willing to pick up trash to keep it clean and be done with it.

I think the Arizona lotto Commission should flip the bill for this one.

How do you answer this not knowing where the $93K goes? That is about 775 people making $15/hour. How much money in tourism does it bring in a day? How much money does the city of Tusayan make a day from Grand Canyon tourists?

The comments here are some of the most asinine comments have read on a page for a long time. Apparently no one knows how many resources to run something that is 277 miles long and 18 miles wide. The pure ignorance of the previous comments just leaves me slack-jawed. Do you realize how much money the Grand Canyon brings in for the state and surrounding areas? Do you know how many people it takes to run a city (because the Grand Canyon is more than a hole in the ground, it's a living, breathing city). Do you know how many people are out of work and are hurting because this is closed? Seriously people, think about things before saying things, you make America look dumb...

People have no clue what smaller government means. They need to find out so they stop turning America into Somalia.
