In case you're just tuning in to reality today, the federal government's closed.

Well, kind of -- things like military paychecks, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid payments are still expected to be doled out. Border Patrol's still operating, so is the Postal Service, and if you're accused of a federal crime, you still have to go to court.

Some things in Arizona won't be operating, like national parks, but we have five ways you can beat the shutdown around here:

5.) Mouth Off to Your Congressman

This is a long-shot, but you know who's still working during the government shutdown? Your congressman. They allegedly listen to their constituents, so if you've ever felt the need to call your congressman's office and demand he or she not contribute to the jackassery that shuts down a federal government, now might be a good time for that.

The fact of the matter is that ACA was passed AND funded by Congress, and upheld by our highest court. It has nothing to do with paying our bills! It's that simple. The GOP just can't stand not getting their way & they are ready to sacrifice the countries' credit rating, stock markets, economy, and jobs because of their selfishness...and they WILL pay in the next election!

NO! The Republicans are acting like spoiled children at the cost of the American tax payer and Gov't workers.

Any time any society has allowed itself to be split into group "A" and group "B", they have spiraled down.   We need more viable political parties.  We need to change to an instant run-off election system to allow members of other parties to have a chance.

Have you seen all the Corporations that are dropping their healthcare plan? Its growing daily.

Craig, I'm exempt too, as you probably are if you are employed and get your health insurance through your employer. Don't fall for the word game. A vast majority of the country is exempt because we get our insurance from our employers.

Its such a great program that Obama and both houses of Congress made sure they were exempt. The people who write the laws need live by the very same laws.

To bad the Democrats are unwilling to compromise and forced a shut down. All polls on average state that 70% of American rejects Obamacare.

Blocking because you and he aren't in the same political party? That's as childish as, I don't know, a government shutdown.

Boehner is basically a pussy for letting the Teabaggers hold this country hostage. It's his job to resolve issues that arise in Congress, but he has no balls.

First two comments. Solid arguments. You both really opened my eyes to the situation... Said no one ever. If you have a valid opinion share it. Otherwise- shhh. That being said, this could've been resolved and it's sad it taken this turn. The only real change is if we actually got off our ass and ran- but we won't. So we get what we support. C'est la vie!

I believe Republicans and Democrats have worn their welcome out. This non-sense would not happen 1 month before an election. peace

I think that this countries  problems run much deeper, than people are willing to admit. This shut down is just  a symptom of a much greater  problem. Corporations have seized all levers of power over our government . Wall Street bankers and Hedge funds  telling both parties , "how high  to  jump "...Military and  Prison complex out of control. The security  and  surveillance State waiting for the next protest...  Thanks for writers like Chris Hedges of TruthDig.com AND   THE PHOENIX NEW TIMES.....peace

Is anyone else getting tired of this constant state of crisis? We've been stumbling from one emergency to the next since 2011, and even had there been an agreement on this CR, it would have to all be done again in Dec.

Now that it is shut down, it would be nice to think there could actually be progress on getting a damn budget that's good through 2014. Enough already with the kicking the can down the road a few weeks or months just so we can all live through yet another strangling of the economy. Work it out and do your damn jobs, congress!

Make no mistake about it: having some 800,000 paychecks stop trickling through the economy will affect things. Might take a while to show up, but it is inevitable. Better we get it all hashed out now, however, than keep dragging this same poor dog and pony show out over and over again. The damn dog and pony are about dead at this point!

We all know that E-Verify is a joke. Since when has it really, truly prevented employers from hiring illegals? E-Verify is a tool to help honest business persons verify an applicant's immigration status. But there are still plenty of dishonest ones but they aren't who Joe goes gunnin' for. It's the poor folks who just want to make some dough doing work that no "American" will even consider. Those remittances back to Mexico help to stabilize the economy there. Truth is, despite THE LAW, illegal immigration, except for the minority who are criminals, is a win-win.

People like you have been telling us to prepare for the "end times" for a couple of thousand years now.   The signs always seem to prove to the faithful that it's just around the corner.   The rest of us aren't impressed.
