Does Joe Arpaio Really Need Constant Heavy Security?

MCSO
Elderly Sheriff Joe Arpaio, after losing a fight with a sidewalk.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is defending the taxpayer cost of his pricey security detail.

Actually, Arpaio released a memo written by members of the security detail, who defended their overtime payments, which have reached as much as $24,000 for one person in a year.

The memo was released after the Arizona Republic found overtime costs from June 2012 to June 2013 totaled more than $120,000.

It's unclear why exactly Arpaio needs 'round-the-clock protection, since almost every single one of the so-called "death threats" against the elderly sheriff lack any evidence of intent. Most of the "threats" are things said in various online forums, far away from Maricopa County.

Unless one shred of evidence is ever provided, it seems pretty clear that the "cartel bounty" on Arpaio's head is imaginary. Perhaps the most credible plot against Arpaio was the one set up by the MCSO itself (which eventually yielded a settlement for the man used as a pawn in the plot).

His security team failed at keeping him safe from the sidewalk outside Arpaio's office, where a trip and fall landed him in the hospital.

Based on what you know, do you think Arpaio really needs this costly security detail?

This is an old photo. He broke his shoulder. Over a year ago I think. Could be a new issue but I don't think so. I will leave my personal opinion out, as requested.

Not that I want to pay for it, but he probably does. He's pissed off enough people. However, I really hope no one does hurt/kill him. This POS isn't worth someone going to prison.

Yes....He has had death threats....More than once...He is a Great Sheriff, Get's the criminals & The Illegals. This is why SOME people don't like him....

If you are a cop and DON'T get threats, then you obviously aren't doing a very good job. This is why every cop in Maricopa County who knows the fact about the job rolls their eyes in derision when Joe says he needs protection. (Remember when some guy put a spider statue made out of an oil barrel and rebar in front of Joe's humble abode in Fountain Hills. He called for the bomb squad to blow it up.)

Yes. No one deserves to die at the hands of another. Let nature take its course. And let God be the judge of whatever happens afterward.

Enough people hate him... so... probably! But it should come from his own pocket, not ours. But we all know that won't happen. Let's get Paul Penzone into office already!

Joe Arpaio needs to retire. Unfortunately there are still too many racist in Arizona to let that man retire. Racist in Arizona want to this old man office.

Wouldn't it be great if we had an ACTUAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER as a sheriff (wow.. what a concept), someone who can actually do the job of an LEO including carrying his own gun so that he can protect himself? Which is 75% of the reason that LEO's carry guns.

Another Rediculous waste of taxpayer money by Arpaio.

It's unthinkable that he'll run for re-election again. He'll be 84 if he does. So what's he gonna do for body protection after he leaves office? There's no Secret Service for ex-shurfs.

@Flyer9753 A Real sheriff. ........... WOW THAT IS SOMETHING TO WISH FOR ...........A REAL GENUINE TWO GUN PETE  SHERIFF. Who'll carry his body armour?

@eric.nelson745 Rusty Pearce will have one of his Republican hoes introduce a bill that provides security for retired AZ shurfs. You can almost hang your hat on that one.

@yourproductsucks2

How? He is not AZPOST certified.

Explain why then every picture with Arpaio in uniform shows him without a gun?

You are wrong, plain and simple.

TommyCollins
TommyCollins topcommenter

@Flyer9753 He had no need to go through the process. He's not a lawman. Never has been, at least as part of MCSO. He's always been nothing more than an elected official. He is a great example that no one needs to know about law enforcement to be an elected sheriff. The elderly guy still doesn't know the difference between reasonable suspicion and probable cause. He's just a politician, but a very good one. I will give him that.

@TommyCollins @Flyer9753 @yourproductsucks2

I have been researching this since that post as well, and found out that you and YPS are correct.

In Arizona, the right for a Sheriff to carry comes from the State Constitution.

However, I will also add, that per a discussion with a POST staff member today, Joe is the only Sheriff in Arizona that has not voluntarily gone through the POST certification process.... makes you wonder what he is hiding that he knows POST would find...

TommyCollins

@Flyer9753 I will agree with YPS2. It's not often that (s)he is right, but this is one. Each sheriff in Arizona is elected and NOT required to be P.O.S.T. certified. As such they do have the right to bear arms, in uniform or not.

danzigsdaddy

@yourproductsucks2  serious question, are there any physical requirements? or any other things where age COULD play a factor? i dont know so i am seriously asking these questions

Flyer9753
Flyer9753 topcommenter

@yourproductsucks2

Never said it was, but it IS required to carry on duty

yourproductsucks2
yourproductsucks2 topcommenter

being POST certified is not a requiremen to being sheriff, fyi.

Flyer9753
Flyer9753 topcommenter

@danzigsdaddy @Flyer9753

No worries :)

Technically Arpaio can carry out of uniform under the same laws anyone in AZ can carry.

In uniform/on duty he has to be AZPOST certified to carry at all, open or concealed, same as any other LEO in this state.

@Flyer9753 going out on a limb and not trying to argue or instigate, but CCW? (like i said, just posing a question) of course, either way would make me nervous because if he cant see well enough to drive or walk.................aiming has got to be a bitch
