Good News: Phoenix Metro Area Is Second in the Nation; Bad News: In Poverty

The Census Bureau has one of those lists where it's not good to be number-one: highest levels of poverty.

Of the top 25 metropolitan areas in the county, Phoenix is second.

According to Census Bureau stats released today, about 17.4 percent of people living in the Phoenix-Mesa-Glendale metropolitan area were below the poverty line in 2012, which is unchanged from 2011. The poverty level in Phoenix alone was more than 24 percent, according to the bureau's estimates.

The national average is slightly less than 16 percent.

The only big metro area with a higher level of poverty is the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, California, area, where 19 percent of the people lived under the poverty line last year.

There is a silver lining for Phoenix -- taking the margins of error into account, there's really a six-way tie for second place, including the metro areas around Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, and San Antonio.

Statewide, Arizona's poverty rate is estimated at 18.7 percent for 2012, which is about the fifth-highest level in the country.

That's pretty high compared to previous years. Although Arizona's poverty level was about 19 percent in 2011, it was at 17.4 percent in 2010, 16.5 percent in 2009, and less than 15.6 percent every year before that, going back to 2000.

According to a statement from the Association of Arizona Food Banks, this information isn't surprising.

"The Census poverty figures align with recent food insecurity data published by Feeding America and food hardship data published by the Food Research and Action Center, all of which paint the same picture: In Arizona, one in five individuals and one in four of our children struggle with hunger and poverty," the non-profit's statement says. "These figures have not changed significantly since the recession began in 2008."

Arizona's Poverty Policy

Let the weak, disabled, disenfranchised, elderly, disadvantaged people die off.  Then things will get better.

Things are EXACTLY the way people in power want them to be. If they didn't want it this way, it wouldn't be this way.

How about the large corporations stop getting subsidies, and we help hungry people instead.?

Everyone with a little bit more (time, money whatever) needs to consider doing something good for their neighbor, let's redefine community.

Doesn't help that our Gov is a dumb bitch, and everyone who signed up to make AZ better doesn't do shit but collect a paycheck and make it worse. Our legal system is ass fucked backwards and it fucks over our citizens for all of their money, cops (especially in Mesa) are crooked as fuck and will get you raped in court, and the Judges just go with it because they're getting that hefty pay check at the end of it all.

What do you expect in a city (and state) dominated by low-wage, dead-end, no-benefit, bottom-feeder jobs, and that was before the slimeballs in the Real Estate Industrial Complex flushed the economy down the shitter? Hey governor Jan Brewhag, where are all those companies from California that were going to flock to AZ in droves because they were tired of paying high California taxes? Oh yeah, those high taxes help California pay for better schools, better social services and better infrastructure than Arizona ever dreamed of having, and encourage a vibrant arts, culture and lifestyle scene that attracts the best and the brightest to start (and keep) their high-tech companies and their well-paying, quality jobs in California!!! The CEOs of quality companies with quality jobs have no interest in relocating to AZ and forcing their employees to live in a backwater shithole run by racist, sexist, bigoted, homophobic Tea Party pricks. (Although a few of the more narcissistic Randian types might buy a house or two in North Snobsdale.)  And the mere fact that some people try to justify it by saying that "it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't count all them durn illeguls and injuns," shows just how fucked up this state is.

And before anyone tells me to "just leave!", I'd love to, but I have elderly parents here who need me. When they no longer walk this earth, I won't be able to get out of this shithole state fast enough, believe me!!!

What do you expect after decades of almost total republican control, a paradise on earth? Conservative economic ideology is a total  failure. Always has been, always will be. Conservatives are too busy finding targets for their intolerance to worry about such trivial things as poverty levels.

I don't like poor people. they're always complaining and who needs all of that negativity?

We have a large population of residents who can't legally hold a job, and a not as large, but still significant, population that are retired and living on poverty-level fixed incomes.

@HILLFOLKREDNECK

You don't seem to realize that the statistics include the illegals, and that they're actually the bulk of the residents below the poverty line because they can't legally hold a job.

@HILLFOLKREDNECK How do you wake up a SHEEPLE?

I think I just discovered why you're having trouble finding employment.

You might ask somebody  with writing skills above those of a third-grader to write your resumes from now on.

@HILLFOLKREDNECK  they take the jobs that are being offered to them, if you have a gripe about them being hired, complain to the employers who are looking for the cheaper labor. if its your job they are taking............become a more skilled laborer to make your self worth more to a company. I dont support illegal immigration any more than i support cop-out artists like you who blame those people because you dont make yourself a more desirable commodity as an employee. if you want to blame illegals for you not having a job, you may as well start blaming people with more experience and knowledge too and then start blaming younger people too for having more stamina and energy and drive.

At one time, there was talk of changing one of Arizona's "Five C's" to "Computers" because there were so many technology jobs here, with Motorola, Intel, Honeywell, etc.

I don't know anybody with a college education who's been unable to stay employed at good wages.

Have you missed the fact that biotech jobs are coming in, and that the legislature has tried to lure other businesses?   Unfortunately, the only short term methods of increasing jobs are labeled "corporate welfare" by liberals.

Conservative policies favor people who are willing to work to build a better life.  Liberal policies favor people who are willing to depend upon the government, and so will vote for whoever will promise them a better life.

@danzigsdaddy         Once again I find myself in agreement, dad.  It is not the poor Mexicans (or neighbors from further south) that are to blame.   It is the US federal government.  We pretend to have laws against illegal immigration and yet turn a blind eye to the illegal crossings and offer a multitude of freebies to entice said crossing.

Anyone in their right mind, facing  a poor future with no hope in an oppressive and corrupt country would look to a place that offers citizenship, free schooling, welfare, food stamps, housing assistance, free medical, free legal, SSI, tax refunds for the more larcenous,  and jobs.

@valleynative @getmeouttahere   It is not just a college education that generates employment, although it sure doesn't hurt.  No matter the 'job market' or the economy, employers are ALWAYS looking for hard working, industrious, tenacious workers.  These same qualities also result in better and better positions.

What employers are not looking for are lazy, whiny, worthless employees that believe themselves entitled.

@shadeaux14 @danzigsdaddy  There are many times I think people who use all caps are doing it deliberately and are not serious. This is really apparent when you have someone who posts under a name like RedNeck Hillbilly, or whatever, then posts the most outrageously stupid comments, all in caps.

I can picture this person posting, then kicking back and laughing his/her ass off at the reactions.  :}

@fishingblues @HaddieNuff @getmeouttahere  I see. So I should instead believe Fox Snooze, Brietbart, Rush (and the rest of the RWNJs)? Sorry, I do indeed trust gov and edu extensions above the Aunt Maude's blog type of 'news.'

But to be honest, I really don't give a rat's ass what you think or believe. I've already wasted far too much time on your lame butt.

@HaddieNuff @fishingblues @getmeouttahere   Well now haddie, your "surplus"is merely a hope and a prayer.  If you believe politicians to tell you the  truth,  especially about money, then you are quite naive and setting yourself up for grave disappointment.
