Did President Obama Convince You of the Need for Military Action in Syria?

President Obama addressing the nation on Syria yesterday.

President Obama addressed the nation yesterday to explain why he's pushing for some sort of military strike in Syria.

While Arizona's congressional delegation is split on striking Syria, the one local poll done on the issue showed that Arizonans really don't want military action there.

-Arizonans Don't Want Military Action in Syria

Congressmen David Schweikert, Paul Gosar, Matt Salmon, and Raul Grijalva (all Republicans, except for Grijalva, a Democrat) have voiced their opinions against military action. The rest of the House members haven't really given a definite opinion either way.

Meanwhile, Senators Jeff Flake and John McCain have been totally for it.

So, President Obama tried to convince Americans why the country's military needs to get involved in another country's matters. This section of his speech (read it all here) explains it pretty succinctly:
If we fail to act, the Assad regime will see no reason to stop using chemical weapons. As the ban against these weapons erodes, other tyrants will have no reason to think twice about acquiring poison gas, and using them. Over time, our troops would again face the prospect of chemical warfare on the battlefield. And it could be easier for terrorist organizations to obtain these weapons, and to use them to attack civilians.

If fighting spills beyond Syria's borders, these weapons could threaten allies like Turkey, Jordan, and Israel. And a failure to stand against the use of chemical weapons would weaken prohibitions against other weapons of mass destruction, and embolden Assad's ally, Iran -- which must decide whether to ignore international law by building a nuclear weapon, or to take a more peaceful path.

This is not a world we should accept.
Well, did that do the trick for you? Did Obama convince you of the need? Cast your vote below:

Oh no, we should go to war because of non existent WMD'S, but let's ignore dead women and children who have been gassed by a psychopath.

No, he made a good case but I am not ready to attack another nation. 200 missiles is an act of war.

Larry I say let him and others like him eat the poison. It will leave things up to people that actually do have a clue what Monsanto is doing and we can stop it without interference from fools.

If you think he's nuts you need to do your homework. Monsanto is growing franken vegetables and fruit. And people like you that don't know or believe it are eating it.

no....we need to take care of ourselves. no money for infastructure, schools, health care, etc. Our kids lives are worth more than this. stop the wars untill we are directly threatened.

When I think about how wonderful the world would be if the Trillions spent on War would have been put to peaceful use it makes me sick to live knowing that there are so many evils going on in the name of austerity, busting unions, deregulating everything corporations want to get away with, wholesale incarcerations and executions, it is devastating.

Oh and one other thing make sure you are also morally ok fighting along side of Al-Qaeda rebels because that's who your new comrades will be.

Bruce, it's time for you to move away from the computer because you're starting to look more and more foolish with every post. There's a sucker born every minute. If you and your fellow troops want to go and get yourself killed for nothing more than money go for it. The only ones that make money off of war are contractors and politicians. So go right ahead and fight another rich man's war. The media has been ordered not to show our dead troops, why do you think that is? Let me answer for you, it's so Americans will keep the whole charade in the far recedes of their brains and not take to the streets like Nam. It's not only a money train it's also about letting others take the lead for once. No matter how much you throw the children in the mix it's still not our fight. What's sad is they still have you believing the hype. But again you are in the minority and last I checked in this country majority rules. And you last sentence shows you're really losing it by pretending to know who I vote for and where I stand politically. Alex Jones and Grandpa Poopy Pants...LMFAO...that's rich....lol.

I've been against every war since the one I was born hearing about, Vietnam. We're tapped out as a nation thanks to evil Halliburton CEO Dick Cheney and his puppet George W. Bush launching us into the Iraq nightmare with a pack of deliberate lies, which Congress was too spineless to override. We can't afford to start another altercation with Syria, and it would solve nothing, anyway. So no. I would, however, like to see a few white collar criminals and war criminals brought to justice. But that would take courage and guts. Both sides are failing the American people.

@Joe Kennedy Staged??? How are you going to coach little kids to have all 4 limbs twitching and moving in different directions independently of each other??? You cant.Like i said,A coward apologist you are.Im here at fort lewis and to a man and women, pretty much everyone here would have no hesitation to go in there. So dont give me some bullshit comment about the news not showing our dead troops.Again,Youd rather have kids die because you dont want to pay to help them. Let me guess, you're a ron paul voting, alex jones listening libertarian??

Joe Kennedy
Joe Kennedy

It wasn't in front of my eyes. But it did look staged. Why do you think they show those images and not the images of our dead troops? It just seems really set up. And actually closer to 70% of Americans are against a strike. That could be because we see through the bullshit that's being shoveled at our feet. It's just most of us are stepping over it this time and a few are stepping in it AGAIN.

Sure...if he started telling the truth or espoused sensible and productive policy. But considering his ideological slant that's highly unlikely. There are a few policies of his I support, as steps generally in the right direction, e.g. the reduced focus on the 'war on drugs' for example....but these have been very few as he's one of the most one-sided and partisan Presidents ever.

Bruce Salvage

Very sad that you see kids of any color get gassed in front of your eyes and die,yet wont do anything because of..MONEY..Again,why did i serve my country so half the nation could be uncaring cowards?? this is not the country i grew up in.

For me this is not an issue about doing something, it's being smart about it. It you look at the history of military actions, only once has a small scaled quick attack ever worked, the raid on Libya in 1986. Sense then all the limited cruse missile attacks have not been effective at all. Next, it is not very smart of the President to tell the enemy what we are planning to do, small scare attack limited to a couple of days... WTF, why don't we tell them exactly what we are going to target as well, can he be any more stupid? Well, yes he can. If the International community is so against it then where are they? Why is it always our responsibility to act when some country steps out of line? Why is it always up to us to spend our assets and risk American lives? I am not against action in Syria, but we need a better plan than the one that's on the table. Truth is, Obama stuck his neck out and got slapped in return, he only wants to respond to save face... sorry for me that's just not a good enough reason to risk all out war in the region.

Joe Kennedy
Joe Kennedy

The bottom line is we all get duped once, but if you don't learn from past mistakes you just continue to repeat them.

Joe Kennedy
Joe Kennedy

It's atrocious what he did, but it's still not our fight. I don't care if it's Christian kids, Muslim kids or Flying Spaghetti Monster kids, it's not our fight. Like I said, we have funded the Saudis, Jordanians and Israelis military for decades let them grow a set. I was against the other wars going all the way back to Vietnam and my stance on war remains the same. It's a rich man's game and the suckers fall for the gungho bullshit that it's all about freedom and preserving humanity when it's just the opposite. It is actually about keeping oppression alive and well. I hate to say it, but you fought for the government and foreign countries not for me. That bullshit about fighting them there so they don't come here is another ploy set up by this government, they are here and have been here. They are a patient people and 9/11 proved it. They were here for years plotting. The in fighting over there is about tribal pride and religion. And religion needs to be put back where it belongs, in private and in churches. It never ceases to amaze me how the people of this country never learn or just ignore the truth.

Joe Birosak

I agree with you, Bruce, when you say the world should take a stance against such horrible weapons. But, unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world. You will always have some crazy bastard that will break the rules. The Syrian situation is very volatile. Lob a few cruise missiles in there and WWIII could easily be started because of certain nations that are opposed to getting involved. Do the ends justify the means? I don't know. This is not a cut and dry situation, unfortunately. A knee jerk reaction could cost millions of lives. Regardless of your stance on this subject and our differences in opinion, Bruce, I thank you for your service.

Kristopher Schindler

Wow Bruce, you really stuck your foot in your mouth there... Here is something else you didn't know, While chemical weapons are illegal to use, nuclear weapons are not, bet you didn't know that! Oh and by the way, before you stick you foot in your mouth again I too, like Joe, am retired military!

Joe Birosak
Joe Birosak

My point was not that we shouldn't get involved, it's that we ignored the situation when women, children and men were being killed with bullets. Does it really f'ing matter HOW they're being killed??? That's what I find ridiculous about the situation. I did my time in the desert, too, my friend.

Obviously youve never been a soldier before. Gas does not care if you're rich or poor, enemy or friend.Same as nukes and they can kill thousands in seconds, just like a nuke..Thats why the world signed the chem weapons ban.Theres a reason why i was never gassed on a battlefield and its BECAUSE of that no chem weapons treaty that people like you now want to do nothing about..Btw are you going to go into egypt, syria, india,p[akistan, afghanistan, iraq, iran etc for EVERY arab civil war? No of course not.Civil wars have ALWAYS been like this in every country,But the world must take a stand against chem and nuke weapons.

Bruce Salvage

I guess you guys just dont care enough except if theyre white american christian babies. And arent all right wingers yammering on about "the children" on stupid things like the failed drug war here?? I lost alot of family that was gassed to death in world war2 and the rest of the coward world did NOTHING,like you all want to do.very sad..If children being killed in mass numbers in front of your eyes make you want top do nothing except say,its not our problem.then im ashamed i served my country for people like you..What happens if we do nothing like u want and assad drops chem weapons on say 6 of his cities? You would have hundreds of thousands dead and a million wounded in SECONDS,just like a nuke.THATS why american and the world must act.Only 3 people in HISTORY have ever used chem weapons..Hitler,sadaam and now assad at least 11 times.Yet right wingers were all for getting sadaam hussein werent they? How two-faced of them..Is that because theres not much oil in syria for us or what??? If we dont step up in the face of a tyrant, then usually no one will.

The Syria scandal is simply a bunch of smoke and mirrors to hopefully make us forget about all the Presidents dirty deeds.  But I'm glad he thinks it is more important that immigration reform.

@Alex Mogo - deleting the thread that showed you have no convictions and ONLY a big mouth. Neat that I shared it with someone in a screen shot before you managed to do so. Thanks for the mature conversation. You should take a lesson from @Stephen Grange. I may disagree with irrefutably but at least he can have a discussion.

@Joe Kennedy

It wasn't our fight until Obama declared that we would strike if they used chemical weapons.

Any strike would not be intended to anything at all beyond protecting our national honor in light of Obama's statement.
