Arizona Drivers Still Can't Drive in the Rain

That's exactly how not to drive.
Every time it rains a considerable amount in the Phoenix area, most drivers seem to take a similar approach to the situation.

That approach is panic, and a general sense of, OH GOD WHAT DO I DO?

Some drivers drive their usual 70-mph-plus, as others stick to the speed limit, while some go about 5 mph under the speed limit, and others go 15 mph or more under the speed limit, as if they were driving on a sheet of ice, and the Grim Reaper were buckled into their passenger seat. Many drivers do what they normally do, and just don't pay attention in general.

The result, of course, is crashes -- everywhere.

Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Officer Carrick Cook tweeted out that there were more than 20 crashes this morning -- in the East Valley alone. If you include the other half of the Valley, the highways outside of the Valley, and all of the crashes on the surface streets, you're probably talking about trillions of car crashes (that's a rough estimate).

The Arizona Department of Public Safety's highway cameras, which only covers a portion of the action on the highways, caught several of these crashes:

No, those last two pictures aren't of the same crash -- those are two different Chevy Silverado drivers who found themselves ass-backwards in the HOV lane of Valley highways. The gold truck was on U.S. 60, near McClintock Drive, and the white one was on Loop 101, near Warner Road.

When DPS officers are tweeting instructions about how to drive in the rain, you know the locals suck at it.

Other crashes not caught on camera include a rollover crash on Interstate 10, a crash involving three motorcycles on State Route 98, another spin-out on I-10, and plenty more.

Everyone, please don't kill each other.

We do the same thing in North Texas when the temp gets to 31F and a snowflake falls out of the sky.

This pic looks like yesterday on the 95 except the 2 car were side by sides pointing to the direction of north. Everyone is in a frickin' hurry especially when it rains! :(

I had to drive all over town for work on Monday. Amazing idiocy out on the road. Geezers freaking out, young drivers driving like they do when it's dry out.

Why would I do that? Ohio fucking sucks. You've clearly never been there.

I've lived in Arizona and California. California drivers are shittier, or maybe they're just more of them.

This is so true, i lived out there for 5 years, and would joke that you could piss in the road and cause a 10 car pile up. the reason drivers do not know how to drive in the rain, is because phoenix barely gets enough rain to help wash the oil off the roads, thus when it rains the oil stands and people think they will not slide when slamming on there brakes.

It's either they drive crazy, or they slam on their breaks on the highway after the 2nd drop hits their windshield almost causing accidents! I'm in Florida now.. Hurricane country. they know how to drive in rain here! hehe

I've driven all over the U.S. and I think People in Chicago are the worst drivers.

Fuckin stupid asses. The left side is the passing lane and the right is for slower traffic. I bet they dont know how to make a turn on a double right turn lane either, they probably merge into the other lane thinking they can just cuz theyre turning right....

The REAL dummies are the ones that drive into flooded streets and then their cars break down and get swept away. They get fined. It's called 'The Stupid Driver Law'. For reals. LOL

I know it just sort of boggles my mind, I guess I'm so use to not great weather most of the time, just driving in rain seem like nothing out of the ordinary, thats all

I imagine, if they lived up there 3/4th of the year, they would be used to driving up there. =)

It's just like in California. It doesn't rain very often. The roadways have a lot of oil on them so when it finally does rain, the roads get extra slick for awhile. People forget and drive like they normally do. It's kinda like ice, so slippery. y car slid a little today coming out of my neighborhood. And it was like "Oh yeah" better slow down a bit. LOL

I know, but really its just rain. Wow I only could imagine if they were up here 3/4th of the yr

No S**T??? (I'm surprised there hasn't been a stampede of folks going to the hospital for suspicion of frostbite, it being in the low 80s. ;-) )

People want to drive faster so that their cars won't get wet.

I think Houston has you beat over there, a one hour commute becomes 2.5 and the accidents on a rainy day are mind-boggling...I used to live over there, it's not as bad as here by any means..

Cheri Ari Zona
Cheri Ari Zona

Texas drivers can't either..especially Houston..

I can honestly agree it's us city folks lol. It rarely rains but yes all we have to do is slow down lol

It's like we lose half our brain cells when we move here...which does not bode well for me.

Joe Rollins

I just moved here from Ohio a year ago, where it rains 80% of the time, and I swear Arizonians are the worst drivers I have ever seen. It's just fucking water, reduce your speed by 1/3 and proceed as normal. Is that so damn hard?

I'd like to see the statistics of others cities and their correlation between rainy weather and collisions. San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, etc. Do they not have ANY car crashes in inclement weather?

Correction: Phoenix drivers. Us drivers in the high country of Arizona drive just fine in winter and rainy weather.

Mark Corby
Mark Corby

No, I'd rather think it's the locals who are the ones that go into "rain drivers from Hell" mode. Those of us originally from out of state do just fine in the snow and rain thank-you-very-much.

Not surprising! Just another crazy day in AZ!

Half the people driving in Phoenix are from states where they deal with snow conditions and yet when they move to phoenix cannot drive safely in the rain!

Yes, Yes, Yes!!!! What the hell happens to people when it rains, even sprinkles!
