Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, spoke at a Phoenix forum about racial profiling Saturday, saying she has found purpose in her son's death, and new meaning in a Florida jury's decision to acquit the man who killed him.

"If [George Zimmerman] would have been convicted, then that would have been an end to the story," Fulton said. "And I would not be sitting here."

Fulton spoke to a crowd of around 100 people at Memorial Hall in Steele Indian School Park. It was part of a forum on racial profiling and a U.S. tour to decry the "Stand Your Ground" gun law that found her son's death justified.

"I never believed that the jury would not see that it was a murder," she says.

Fulton and the family's lawyer, Benjamin Crump, say they are using the loss to champion their latest effort to change Stand Your Ground laws in the U.S. with the "Trayvon Amendment," which, Crump says, would make it so that "if you confront someone, and if you instigate [a fight], you can't get away with murder."

Crump says the problem is not just that Zimmerman was found legally justified in killing Martin but, more important, the precedent it sets.

"Now every black and brown boy walking down the street has as target on their back, and this law says when you hit that target, it's okay."

Arizona and about 20 other states have Stand Your Ground laws -- or something similar to them -- which grants a person the right to use deadly force to defend themselves if they feel threatened, without requiring them to retreat. Fulton and Crump say they plan to travel to as many Stand Your Ground states as possible to catalyze discussion about the law.

When 3% of the nations population, namely black males under age 30 commit 50% of all violent crime, profiling is not only moral, but quite prudent.

Embarrassing misreporting.  "Stand Your Ground" never came into play here - the doctrine of the right to self defense exists without a "Stand Your Ground" law.  In a court of law, you also have to prove that a crime the defendant is charged with was committed beyond a reasonable doubt.  The evidence presented at trial came absolutely no where near establishing that - "stand our ground" was irrelevant.  There was plenty of evidence presented showing Zimmerman was getting his head bashed into the cement, however, at the time it occurred.  There are many things we can only assume whichever side you want to take, which doesn't lend itself to showing a crime occurred beyond a reasonable doubt in order for someone to be convicted of a crime.

There is also absolutely no evidence of racial profiling.  Zimmerman was himself multi-racial, including black from a fairly close relative.  In addition, from Zimmerman's history, the others he had tracked were all white during his tenure as a watchman.

Totally dishonest, false dialog presented by our friends on the left - once again.  Completely phony narrative to try to shape policy of the country in their own image.

Every state must enact a 'Stand your Ground" law if they don't have one already.

Hey, screw Trayvon Martin's mother. What that black bitch should be doing is stop worrying about her dead thug son and instead protest those three black thugs who savagely beat a white 13-year old boy on a Florida school bus.

"Stand Your Ground" was waived by George Zimmerman's defense. Zimmerman's attorneys did not use "Stand Your Ground" as a defense. They used standard self defense. Zimmerman was not freed due to "Stand Your Ground". Trayvon Martin's mom knows this. Her lawyer knows this. Saying that "Stand Your Ground" freed George Zimmerman is nothing more than a complete lie.

The fact that Weston Phippen doesn't mention the fact that "Stand Your Ground" was not used as a defense means that both he and the New Times a a party to this dishonest disinformation campaign. Report the facts and let the chips fall where they may. Don't base arguments on half truths and lies.

So much disinformation. Is it the lawyer, the mother, or the author of this piece?

Seven comments so far. A previous article about AZ legislator Bob Thorpe and his "racist" tweets generated 15 comments, five of them mine. Seems this topic doesn't stir much interest.

"I never believed that the jury would not see that it was a murder," she says.

Hey, you should have taught your son  not to attack people. I'd would have shot him too or anybody else that was attacking me. This is a simple case of self defense but your entitlement attitude has lead you down the wrong path.

Look at the lawyer, he's banging Sybrina for a cut of the HOA settlement. Wow 100 people out of 3.5 million showed up to listen to her whine. peace

It should be emphasized that MANY Stand Your Ground cases were devoid of witnesses. Therefore, it is much easier for killers to claim SYG as a defense. In several instances, judges have told victims' families that because of the way SYG is written, there's nothing that can be done to hold killers accountable. Drug deal gone bad or personal score settled, the killer often has nothing to do but claim self-defense under SYG. Who's going to argue with him if there were no witnesses and his story sounds credible? Is SYG a virtual license to kill? Most definitely.

@robert_graham we have one.......................why didnt the MCSO deputy shoot the minuteman? he had every right to and nobody would have questioned it

eric.nelson745

@MoreBadJournalism No, it is not a COMPLETE lie. Jury instructions cited SYG in all but name, forcing the jurors to acquit the POS.

@MoreBadJournalism, If U don't know what happened or U just ignore the facts in order 2 make UR point, U better keep UR piehole shut. The judge gave instructons to the jury panel on "STAND YOUR GROUND" along with SELF DEFENSE which was missleading, and caused that travesty of justice, furthermore; a whole jury made out of "whites" but 4 one person, because a "black" person couldn't B "found"?. That's a WIN-WIN situation 4 Zimmerrman D KILLER. And he knows it.

Everybody should be thinking about how many future people Trayvon would have attacked and hurt (killed?) should he had lived.

tcruse

@eric.nelson745

good link.  Based on the cases reviewed, SYG seems to be working just as it should.  Maybe fewer "plea deals" would be in order, but I suspect that is SOP.

tcruse

@eric.nelson745

Just as in every other case, if the state can not produce evidence the person should not be tried.  It is un-reasonable for the victim to go to extreme measures to retreat when they are not doing anything illegal or being any place they should not be.  SYG merely make the process go faster and prevents "parents of thugs" from getting rich based on a crime there dead offspring did.

@eric.nelson745 What cases are you referencing that successfully used the "stand your ground" law as a defense?

You stated "MANY", perhaps you can show, oh I don't know, 3 examples?

jonnyquest

Now you're just talking ignorant shit. You should just tell the truth and say that a white is wrong to shoot a black, no matter if it's self defense, no matter if the black trying to kill him. Just say what you really feel.

tcruse

@IdontRecall

Since Zimmerman had no option to retreat when on the ground being beaten, SYG does not apply.  The text that the court gave the jury is directly from Florida law and could not be changed to make Zimmerman look guilty.  The judge did everything legal (and a bit more) to try to convict Zimmerman.  So, with a less bias judge the case would have been ended with a directed "Not Guilty" well before the jury was involved.  I suggest that you actually look at the trial proceedings before making your racist comments.

The jury was selected just like any other jury and both sides agreed to the jury.  Neither side had any objections to the finial jury.  For your racial implementations, the FBI did everything possible to attempt to bring a "hate crime" into the mix and could not find any reason.  So, an honest person would conclude that "race" was not an issue.

@tcruse @eric.nelson745 Actually, no. The bill's author stated that SYG HAS NOT worked out the way he intended. Hence the need to tweak it so that there are no more Trayvons six feet under.

eric.nelson745
eric.nelson745 topcommenter

@tcruse @eric.nelson745 True, Zimmermann wasn't doing anything illegal. But he certainly ignored the 911 dispatcher's advice to break off the pursuit. And he actually tried to confuse the cops as to his precise location. He was hell-bent on confronting Trayvon, who in truth was minding his own business. He WAS NOT looking in windows or checking doors. So Zimmermann catches up with him, whereupon Trayvon whirls around and asks, "why are you following me?" And the rest is sordid history.

tom_stratford

@eric.nelson745 @tcruse @IdontRecall But Zimmerman never confronted Martin, he was on the way back to his truck, but nice try. next time try actually learning what happened at trial, so you won't look even more stupid than you already are.

The jury did not agree with your representation. The jury finding is the rule of law.

eric.nelson745

@tcruse @IdontRecall Of course the POS was able to retreat. Just run like hell! Zimmermann got more than he bargained for when he confronted Trayvon. According to court testimony, he was in no shape to physically challenge Trayvon. He was just too effin' stupid to know when he's beat. He absolutely could have gotten up and ran. But no, he was according to him on the ground, gun in the back, and he somehow managed to grab it and fatally shoot Trayvon. I'll be sorry for the victim, but hope that someday he plugs some hapless individual WITH WITNESSES nearby and buys himself a life sentence.

Not sure who you consider the "author".  ALEC seems to get the credit most of the time by the "anti-gun"/"anti-2A" groups.  The law will not be changed.

@tcruse @eric.nelson745 The only thing that matters is that the jury was compelled to find Z not guilty. And except for juror B-37, they regretted doing what they had to do.

that was my point, however incomplete or confusing it may have been.  There haven't been any successful cases in Az where SYG was the defense.
