Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton Gives President Obama a Letter Written By Arizona Dreamer

Tony Valdovinos in 2012 working to increase voter turnout in his community.
Mayor Greg Stanton briefly spoke with President Barack Obama when he arrived in Phoenix to speak about the U.S. housing market.

Along with a welcome, a handshake and a half-hug, Stanton had a letter for Obama written by a local Dreamer -- Antonio (Tony) Valdovinos.

The letter thanked the president for his deferred action initiative and support of comprehensive immigration reform.

The letter was written by Valdovinos, one of the leaders of Team Awesome, a group of students who mobilized their west Phoenix community and more than quadrupled voter turnout recently.

Valdovinos lives in Phoenix and is among the 300,000 young people who are now able to work in the U.S. because of "deferred action."

Valdovinos thanked President Obama for "helping people like me live without fear for the first time in my life" and for turning "Dreamers into Achievers."

Young, undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children have been dubbed Dreamers because they would benefit from the DREAM Act, a bipartisan measure that has been blocked due to the ongoing Congressional gridlock in Washington. It would provide certain young immigrants a path to citizenship if they met requirements including attending college or joining the military.

In June 2012, the Obama administration announced deferred action.

When deferred action was unveiled, Governor Jan Brewer immediately released a statement ensuring her anti-immigrant supporters that the young people who qualified for deferred action, and thus lawful employment, would not be granted Arizona driver's licenses.

The full text of Valdovinos's letter can be found on the next page.

As a resident of Arizona, land owner of Arizona and a tax payer I am amused at how politics reminds me of a old corny saying from my youth, the sun does not shine on one dogs tail all the time, but has to shine on some other dogs tail some of the time! It must come as a truly shock to the right wing here in Arizona that nationally they account for 22% of the electorate, and here in Arizona about 34% give or take a percentage point, democrats around 31% or so and remainder around 35% independents and minority parties such as the green party etc., hence no clear 50.1% majority exists, they have to win via fooling some of the people not of their party to vote with them, or get as many who never vote with them do not vote to win, and demographics is not on the side of the party who adopted all them angry white segregationists in the 1960's who fled the democrat party in anger over civil rights issues, so sad them ugly red headed, rednecks have come home to haunt them now!:-)

It must drive the right wing, racists in America insane to have to face the fact their great white hope that Mormon with his magic underwear lost their last bid for white house, they barely hold onto congress now with popularity of their icons at the lowest in history of America for their performance in that congress of do nothing but whine, cry about what the other party is doing but have nothing they can get passed into law of any significance! I am reminded of a little puppy just back from the vet who has been neutered and has lost his family jewels, that is the present day GOP, all they can do is whimper, whine and apparently now they have turned into cannibals to boot and have started eating their own with gusto!

Oh by the way there wil still be NO drivers licenses for Dreamers. It will be interesting to find out if those 9 Dreamers have drivers licenses?  If they do then it's time to prosecute them for identity theft because they are not supposed to have them.

Why do they cry and lie and say that if they return to Mexico they face persecution? If they remain here they should face worse.

Hey screw you Dreamer and all the others.  You are still an illegal alien and it's time you are treated as such.  Go back to Mexico where you came from and don't come back.

I know some one who works for the government who had to take every other Friday. Now she has to take every other Monday off. How can you pay bills on a 3 day work week . He could have stayed in D.C. & helped families get back to work.

Sorry but I don't agree with the current legislation being proposed. Its a handout of $30 billion to corporations and border security that we DO NOT need. The bill as written makes it too difficult to get a citizenship and does not rationally address the actual problems we face. Giving the Republicans a $30 billion blow job full of uneeded security is no way to compromise.

so if my parents came across the US/mexico border, illegally, boom. automatically to the front line in becoming a legal US citizen, able to work, any identity crime committed overlooked, allowed a drivers license, welfare, etc, hmm. i wonder if all the other people on the path to becoming legal citizens, through US immigration, will be given the same break this leaches are. i still dont understand what makes these people the exception to rules.

Instead of saying "thank you" Antonio should have asked why a very few people are granted "deferred action" while the administration has set all time deportation records. Obama wants these kids to think he's their savior while deporting their adult family members. What a load of donkey shit. I have more respect for the Westboro Baptist Church. At least they believe what they say.

@enigma9000aa I agree with your numbers, and am glad that they are that strange.  I would not want to live in a country where everyone voted in lockstep with one party.

But, your party is the one that is running the show now.  It always seems to go back and forth every decade or so, and it will be interesting to see how many people are fed up with the Obama myth by 2016.

He is a great public speaker.  I salute those the write his speeches for public consumption.  Having said that, he is the least qualified person that I can imagine for the job that he has been elected to, twice.  That speaks to the ignorance of the people, especially in the Democratic Party, for they never really knew who they were voting for, but punched those ballots just as the Party told them to do.

I doubt that the Repubs will have an awesome opponent in 2016.  They just are not that organized.  However, if the Dems think that Hillary is the answer to our prayers, then that party is doomed to total failure, too.

The thinking is that anybody who satisfies the requirements of the Dream Act and proceeds to get a college education and becomes able to support themselves and a family (and others, through taxes), is a net benefit to society.

It's easy to make a case that they have more value to the nation than, for example, some uneducated hillfolk living on the government dole.

@Ryan Starzyk All bills are unneeded blowjobs for one party or the other.  Why not limit a bill to one topic?  No add-ons, no amendments...just tell us what you feel we need to do!

The lazy bastards will never do that.  No matter which party you vote with, you are being played like a cheap violin.

Imagine a burglar saying that same thing to a child in the home he's broken into.

Why should that burglar have to go to prison because he wasn't lucky enough to have been born into the family that is legally entitled to be in the home?

The adult family members will never be able to vote.  Deporting some of them (even if they turn around and come back in) mitigates a Republican talking point.

I think saying us democrats run the show is a bit wrong in one way, maybe we did from 2008 to 2010 when we held all three branches, but today its a Mexican standoff to coin a old corny saying, congress which holds the purse stings is held by republicans, white  house and senate by democrats which means no one gets nothing unless someone blinks!

@IdontRecall OK...let's play the semantics game, like you asked.

Marco had a hypothetical scenario whereby his parents came here illegally, bringing him along.  That is not to say that his parents actually did this, so that round is over.

His point was that by coming here illegally, and avoiding deportation, his parents somehow cut to the front of the line for immigration.  Should that be celebrated somehow?

Are the others, that stayed in place while waiting their turn to immigrate lawfully, somehow less entitled to the benefits of life in the USA?

Is the new requirement for legality as a foreign born visitor now going to hinge on whether you follow our laws and rules, or whether you get caught breaking them/

I support immigration from all countries.  I do not support illegal immigration, and the Mexicans are the face of that crime.

DREAM my ass.  Volunteer to go to the Middle East and defend this place you feel owes you something.

jonnyquest
jonnyquest topcommenter

I don't think mitigating Republican talking points is the reason behind this. I think the administration is doing this is to increase fear within the undocumented community. Who gets blamed? Who proudly takes credit for fighting illegals? The Republicans. So Obama rides to the rescue and defers action for a few. Instant hero. Republicans vilified. Win, win for Democrats.

bob_lablaw96
bob_lablaw96

@IdontRecall Wow!  Another community activist.  The last one that we heard about somehow got elected.  It has been downhill in many ways since that day.

I understand that they were not brought here of their own free will.  But, just because they finished high school should not be the freedom to bitch about how our laws are enacted or enforced.

Did any of these folks volunteer for the military?  Just wondering how much loyalty they feel that they owe to the country that gave them such a cool life.

@JohnQ.Public

The degree of crime in each case doesn't hurt the analogy.  It just makes the error in thinking more obvious.  Hyperbolic, perhaps, but a valid analogy.

The underlying principle of right and wrong applies to both in the same way.

JohnQ.Public
JohnQ.Public

@valleynative  A more appropriate analogy would be to say that to someone who walks into the lobby of a government builidng and stays there all day without leaving. Burglary is felony, the immigration violation being discussed is a civil one - it is more aking to a very low-level misdemeanor trespass citation than a felony burglary one.  And the injury is to the federal government, not you personally as an individual.  In fact, an even better analogy is a civil lawsuit for trespass, rather than a criminal citation for tresspass, brought by the federal government.
