Is There Anything About Tent City That's Worth Celebrating?

MCSO
Sheriff Joe Arpaio

This weekend, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio celebrated the 20th birthday of his favorite son jail, Tent City.

To celeberate, Arpaio ordered some stuff for inmates that's generally not allowed -- coffee, better food, rental movies, unrestricted television, magazines, '90s music, and cigarettes (candy cigarettes, HARDY HAR HAR!).

We had a hard time thinking of what's worth celebrating about the jail.

Statistically, most people don't die in Tent City or Arpaio's other jails, so that's kind of a plus.

Um, that's about it.

It's kind of frowned upon to claim you're running a concentration camp, and it's probably more frowned upon to celebrate its birthday.

Can you think of anything about Tent City that's worth celebrating?

What amazes me the most is people from other states around the country really love this guy and his pink tent city. It's hard to believe but his popularity reaches far and wide. If attention is why tent city was erected, it has achieved its purpose...there is nothing to celebrate unless you are really into the color pink.

I think when time finally swallows this evil man under the dirt someone should pitch a pink tent over his grave...It may be hot here in Phoenix..but it will be hotter IN HELL

Every other county in Arizona and across the country should have a similar Tent City.

It's absolutely worth celebrating. First of all it saves the taxpayers money or would you rather see criminals housed in a more expensive jail? And because jails are not supposed to be nice, OBEY THE LAW and you will never go there.

Inmates don't return... it WAS very inexpensive 15 years ago - what has changed? It seems like it aught to be the model for ALL states prisons systems for the less severe criminal housing to deter incarceration. If it's not as great as well all think then share some details - I say "Way to Go Joe!"

if idiots in AZ would stop breaking laws then we wouldn't need a stupid thing like tent city

Hey Tammy. This jail doesn't have TV or sports. That's almost comical and sounds more like prison. Get your facts straight^^^

Bill, a friend of mine was in tent city back in 2006 for a DUI, right around the time they were shooting a special on the tent. They were given a piece of paper on what to say when interviewed. If inmates didn't stick to the script, they were thrown in the hole. Another friend of mine served tent city this past Feb/ Mar. Spice, pills, you name it are apparent frequent flyers of tent city. And the 'Gladmo bags' they give them for food is a joke. Made him violently ill for days even tho he only touched it once. I'm not biased, I'm informed. There is a difference. And that, my friends, is why I'll never support this place. Call the phone number to the jail and listen to Arpaio's propaganda. Its enough to make even the strongest of Arpaio fans I'll..

Yes it should be celebrated. Why do criminals deserve anything but deplorable conditions. Maybe if jails served 1 meal a day, only had books for recreation instead of sports/TV, and no free medical benefits perhaps it would really be a deterrent. Sometimes life in prison is better than the life some people left behind.

I would also hope you would feel " safer " if MCSO didn't have one of the worst 911 response times in the country. But hey, that's just silly huh?

Funny how you feel "safer" that 70% or more of the people incarcerated in tent city aren't even convicted of a crime and are awaiting trial. I would think you would feel "safer " if Arpaio would arrest some of the 50,000 criminals with felony warrants running the streets that he hasn't touched.

Channel 10's newscast on Saturday said "inmates celebrated" this anniversary. Is Joe writing their scripts now?

No,not really. Not that I am against incarceration of criminals. I am personally against imprisoning low level non violent drug offenders. I don't like Sheriff Arpaio because he's one of the"birther" clowns that are out there!

Obviously, all of you "yes" folks haven't done ANY research on Arpaio or his antics, because if you did you'd know he is nothing more than a cheap, attention whore!

Toni, I suppose the flaw to that statement is that County jail holds numerous people that havent actually been convicted of the crime they were arrested for (pre-trial) and are considered innocent until proven guilty. Anecdotally though, I know numerous people who refuse to drink and drive specifically because they want to avoid tent city. Not sure this place should be celebrated or vilified, but it is certainly a place that nobody wants to be, and I suppose thats the desired purpose/outcome.

Sara Sturz

Hey Sheeple don't you think about why they put people in jail... Are only the rich supposed to be free? Look at who is committing the most Heinous crimes... Your leaders fools. When Joe gets nailed for crimes that he's committed then talk to me. Who commits more serious crime the people or the government. Start reading real news, not what Fox tells you!

Sara Sturz

The DEATH of Joe Arpaio will be worth celebrating... And thank god it looks like he's getting close.

Toni Fasci

Absolutely! Commit a crime do the time. Complain about the living conditions don't commit a crime. You deserve what you get. It is supposed to make people not want to go back and stay on the right path but it too is a revolving door. So it really can't be all that bad. Right?

Almost half million put away to date... what's there not to celebrate!! No frills, no thrills.. isn't that what jail is suppose to be?

Unless you think the abuse of human beings is something to be celebrated---NO

Tent City is what happens when you pin a badge on a sociopath.

On the SOBs Facebook page I asked if there were candles on the birthday cake or, in honor of Joe, did they put 20 little burning crosses on it.  Didn't make them real happy.

@JoeArpaioFan  actually twit, there are people in there who have been falsely accused also.(there are lots of people who beat their cases and there are even people who clear themselves of those charges) since they have not really done anything other than be accused..............why should they be treated as subhumans? you have claimed MCSO cops like Abrahmson and Edmonds were falsely accused and are innocent, if you are right and they are innocent, they should still be penalized and punished as subhumans because they were accused. thats why your logic breaks down and fails, you claim one thing and then contradict it. should those cops that you claim are innocent be beaten and deprived food like you claim all others should? until those people get their day in court to prove their guilt or innocence how do you feel they should be treated? Joe treats everyone of the people in his custody as if they are guilty, and he does this before it has been established if they are or arent. that isnt justice, its a power trip and its all of Joe's power trip plays that are costing this county far more than anything he has saved

danzigsdaddy
danzigsdaddy topcommenter

@Elise Harron  Elise, your comment has me a little confused. you are saying it WAS inexpensive 15 years ago...............are you agreeing with many of us that it is no longer saving money? I am not proposing easy times for inmates, but i AM saying it is NOT the money saver Joe claims it is. there are too many problems with it (and the system). another thing i am going to have to politely correct you on is the very beginning of your post "Inmates dont return" .................many, many people return, the recidivism rate is astronomical. Joe recently stated that over 500,000 people have been through tent city, IF that is in reference to 500,000 new inmates, that would mean in a county of approximately 6 million, one out of every 12 people have been through tent city (damn high percentage), if it refers to how many people have been through or returned....................that would indicate a pretty high return rate.

robert_graham

@Tammy J Palmer Yes, it should be a lot worse. I have heard the monsoons have brought out the snakes in droves so maybe a few of the criminals will get bit in their sleep if we are lucky.

Mikey1969
Mikey1969

@Tammy J Palmer First off, you need to learn the difference between a "jail" and a "prison". Secondly, over 70% of the people in Joe's jails have either not been convicted of a crime(And are therefore innocent under US law), or they are in there for something like not paying a DUI fine. Your real criminals are in Florence. Joe is small potatoes, as are the strong majority of his inmates. Last, you can't serve  a single meal a day or cut medical benefits, because while people are incarcerated, the municipality that has them is required to provide a  basic level of health and safety. You can't starve people in jail, and you can't let them rot away and die of sickness.

Don't like all of this? GTFO, head to China or North Korea, some shithole where stuff like this is allowed, but while you're in America, you should really brush up on the way the law works.

Mikey1969
Mikey1969

@Toni Fasci Well, Joe's recidivism rate isn't lower than anyone else's, so they're coming back anyway. Also, over 70% of the people there are either innocent by law, or are serving time for something as "dangerous" as not paying a fine on time.

You know, if you people would bother to actually pay attention, we wouldn't have to repeat these simple facts to you. And no, by "pay attention", I don't mean "aternate between sucking Joe's dick, and that of Fox News", I mean actually pull your head out of your ass and pay attention to the world, ask some questions, ask MULTIPLE sources, and stop just accepting everything your hear.
