Danny's Family Car Wash Raid by ICE and Minuteman Richard Malley Doing Same Job?

dannys-logo-1.jpg
On a deserted stretch of Interstate 8, "Minuteman" Richard Malley and two buddies hunt for illegal immigrants.

Back in Phoenix, at 13 Danny's Family Car Wash locations across the Valley, Obama's modern-day INS, some dressed in ski masks and toting assault rifles, are basically the same thing. At least, they are in the eyes of some.

Richard Malley

Malley allegedly mistook a sheriff's deputy for a Mexican and got him in the crosshairs of his AR-15 for a few seconds. He was booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated assault.

Following the Danny's raid, it's clear that some aren't viewing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau as anti-immigrant heroes, either.

The raid, followed by an unsealed indictment against the business and 14 employees, has thrown pro-immigration forces in a tizzy.

Dulce Matuz, president of the Arizona DREAM Act Coalition, an affiliate of United We Dream, nearly likened the Danny's raid to terrorism: "We will not accept this ongoing separation of our families and terrorizing of our communities. If the White House is serious about immigration reform, they need to reunite families and end these outrageous raids."

If anything's clear, it's that immigration has become a hot topic again, with Congress working on the latest immigration-law bill and one of the largest workplace raids in recent history occurring in Phoenix. The Danny's car wash raid, with its images of handcuffed Mexicans being led away, (even though most of the detained were allowed to continue working and living in the United States), brings the debate to sharp focus.

Sure, the document fraud is a concern, but the story presented by the feds is that the false documents were used merely to secure employment in a low-paying job. Do we really want to bust these people and separate families? Isn't ICE just doing what Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been accused of?

On the other hand, with about half of Danny's car washers allegedly working illegally, isn't it true that American jobs are being displaced directly by foreign workers? But if so, why is Obama letting them go? What a mess.

Which brings us back to Richard Malley, the anti-immigrant flake who appears to have made an honest mistake in the dark. County Attorney Bill Montgomery should have fun figuring out what to do with him.

He won't be charged with hunting undocumented immigrants, of course. There's no statute against that, and heck -- it's what passes for sport in some parts of Arizona.

We should feel sorry for illegals who choose to sneak into this country and take identities, jobs and benefits from American citizens. Look at car washes in the northern part of the US were there are less Illegals, they have no problem hiring LEAGLE workers and not affecting the price of car washes. Illegals wont be happy until there's an open boarder and Spanish is a second language. All while they send drugs and commit crimes in our communities. Crimes the national main stream media wont tell you because they will benefit financially from second language programs. A big majority of Americans aren't fooled by illegals who cry victims of there own fault.

Malley is a damned fool and derserves whatever he gets. I see nothing wrong with the original "Observe & Report" idea behind the citizen Border watchers. Don't have any concern with citizens being armed either, that's all perfectly fine.

But running your own private patrol in the dark of night looking for drug cartel smugglers is a plan for finding trouble.

Seems Malley found trouble alright, and now he's going to jail.

Amazed to read that Stern thinks Malley made an honest mistake here, what the hell is that about?

Hendley should probably come back from his vacation in order to avoid making Stern do a shtick he obviously doesn't want to do...This is a pathetic comparison-other.

No, these illegal workers are not replacing U.S. workers. They're mostly doing the kind of work no "self-respecting" white American would consider accepting. And yes, the tactics of ICE agents appear to be taking a page from Al-Kaida with the ski masks and assault rifles. None of that is necessary.

Obama has created a Helter-Skelter in our country. I.C.E. has been handcuffed by Homeland Security who gets its marching order's from special interest groups. It seems to me the illegal immigrant who has a family can get special treatment and be above certain laws while everyone else who is caught doing the exact type of crime (fraud) be held accountable and pay the price.I could give a rats ass about Mexican's and their plight its the blatant failure of our judicial system that seems to playing by  2 sets of rules and it sucks.

You've established a false equivalency in your comparison of Richard Malley and ICE.  Richard Malley was acting outside the rule of law while ICE was acting to enforce the law.  Richard Malley pretended to be law enforcement while ICE actually is law enforcement.

The right to control who enters and exits a country is core to national soveriegnty.  As much as I detest the way that Sheriff Arpaio, County Attorney Montgomery and the Arizona Legislature approach the immigration issue, the government of the United States has the right and authority to determine who is allowed to enter into the United States and, once here, how long an alien can remain and what an alien can do while here.  That is core to the soveriegnty of the United States and every other nation state.  While immigration reform is long overdue and should reflect the reality of the current environment, the current laws need to be enforced.

Again, I hate the way that Sheriff Arpaio and County Attorney Montgomery engage in unconstitutional racial profile in their wasteful and misguided effort to enforce federal immigration law, but we also need laws enforced and federal law enforcement going after those that are responsible for large scale fraud, as the operators of Danny's Car Wash allegedly were, is fully appropriate.

Seriously Ray? There is no comparison between this knucklehead and what ICE did at Danny's. Nothing good could have happened out in that desert and who knows what the true intents of these whack jobs were. Leave the job to the real cops........no wannabe's needed.

@yourproductsucks Ray Stern believes in this so strongly that he is going to post his SSN for any Danny's employee to use.  The people with stolen identities -- those who were turned down for unemployment benefits, those who couldn't qualify for AHCCCS, those who struggled for six months convincing IRS they didn't work there -- they're just whiners, not victims.

@eric.nelson745 Oh really?  You mean there are no struggling young college students who would gladly accept a job at a car wash?  Do you mean to tell me that American workers would not want to have a job in a car was doing cashier work, janitorial, maintenance and even oil changes?

No longer is it true that illegals only do the jobs that Americans don't want.  Illegal aliens don't only work the fields.

Illegal aliens are not replacing American workers -- they are stealing jobs.

@eric.nelson745 I know a hardworking young man who applied for a job at Danny's a couple years ago. He delivered his application to their North Scottsdale corporate office,  the only place they  were accepted.  His ancestors settled in Massachusetts in the 1640s.  Danny's didn't call him back for an interview.  This was the same time they were hiring back their illegal crew.  He's still looking for full-time work at minimum wage.

@eric.nelson745

Illegal immigrant workers depress wages.  For examples look at the meat packing plants in the Texas Panhandle, Minnesota and Iowa.

In Cactus, TX, north of Amarillo, local workers were replaced by other workers who were paid wages at about half of what had been previously paid.  In a raid, the ICE determined that about 95% of the workers at the plant were in the country without authorization to work.

@robert_graham@eric.nelson745     Valley construction employers are struggling to find enough documented workers to meet the rising demand for skilled trade jobs... so says the local news.  And who wants to pick our fruit and vegetables?  College kids going to spend 10-12 hours a day bent over picking vegetables or plucking those avocados from the trees?

Do you really think employers would rather pay minimum wage to undocumented workers, and risk all the grief, if they could pay the same wage to documented workers?

What we need is a rational guest worker program and a rational immigration program.

@rickaz59 @eric.nelson745 That man better check his SSN because it is probably being used by an illegal alien.  There's no better way for a dishonest employer to get information to be used for Identity Theft than from a job application.  That's what Danny's did. Now they must be punished.

@rickaz59 @eric.nelson745 Your point is well taken. Obviously Danny's wanted only Hispanic applicants because most of its workers are Hispanic. They'll work long hours for little remuneration. They'll take whatever they can get. Some of their wages are sent to family in Mexico. Now, about four years ago the Lindstrom Family Car Wash at 30th St. and Indian School was raided. That shut them down for nearly two weeks. When they re-opened, they had scads of of teenage white and African-American workers. Evidently they learned their lesson... for a while, anyway.

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownasPaul @eric.nelson745 I've said this many times: Illegal workers mostly take jobs that "Americans" don't want. How would you like to bend over picking strawberries 8 hours a day? Betcha wouldn't. Working in slaughterhouses is pretty much the same. Most white folks wouldn't be able to stomach it. True, back in the day they did. But not anymore.

@eric.nelson745  Agreed - sounds a little over the top.  Also, why Saturday morning at 11:00 when it seems to me its going to be really busy instead of, say Monday morning at 8:30 when it isn't.  I was actually at a Danny's Saturday at 8:30 and had my car waxed after being washed (and was out by 9:30).  I wonder what would have happened if my car had wax on it when the raid occurred - would they have allowed the wax to dry and ruin my car's paint?  The timing on a weekend seemed really strange and unnecessary as well.

Yup, I finally agree with this fucking douche bag, JoeArpaioFan.

ICE is sure as hell a lot better than that corrupt asshole Arpaio and his keystone cops, the MCSO!

Yup, it's Arpaio, who is either fucking stupid or corrupt (I think both) who let his buddy Danny get away with the very same crimes Arpaio so loves to crow about on TV.

All the while, MCSO's record felony closures hovers at the dismally low level of about 15%.

Yes, Arpaio is such a fucking Joke that even ICE looks good.

@Desertrat1 @ray.stern @rickaz59 @yourproductsucksPhoenix, Az-based Pro’s Ranch Markets filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the District of Arizona on May 28, 2013, according to documents filed with the court.

The company points to a number of factors contributing to the decline in its solvency, including a floundering U.S. economy, the loss of construction and other blue collar jobs in Arizona and New Mexico, the adverse effects of Arizona’s perception of immigrants and Hispanics, increased retail competition, the results of an immigration audit, and Bank of America’s declination to provide further advancements.

@ray.stern @rickaz59 @yourproductsucks

On April 21, 2010 ICE raided Pro's Ranch Market. ICE identified about 300 workers who used forged docs to get their jobs. Pro's Ranch Market employed about 1500 employees at the time and none of the 300 were arrested. I wonder what happened to that case, no owners or managers were arrested either....this may be a good time to follow-up on that .....the lack of enforcement did not garner much attention and must have keep the activists happy......

@rickaz59 @eric.nelson745 Nobody is saying that ACA will not have an upward pressure on companies' operating expenses and ultimately on prices. Economists do not see the dire consequences forecast by the GOTP (Grand Old Tea Party). Remember when Papa John opened his big trap about that? He complained that full implementation of Obamacare would cause the price of his pizzas to rise by 14 to 17 cents. Bravo Foxtrot Delta (if you've been in the military you know what that means).

rickaz59

@eric.nelson745 @rickaz59 I also know a Danny's employee (blue eyes, blond hair) who was hired at a job fair the company held back when they had to replace 900 workers in a hurry.  They hired a lot of whites and a few Africans, mostly legal Somali refugees, not so much African-Americans.  Many of those hired then have stayed with the company, but many moved on, as happens with most low-income jobs.  When they left, the path of least resistance was to hire back someone already known who had experience and a desire to work.

What I find interesting in this discussion is that no one has mentioned the Affordable Care Act, and how a car wash can be profitable when the (delayed) employer mandate kicks in next year.  If everyone follows the same rules, prices will go up except for the companies with fewer than 50 employees.  Difficult to do that, even if you segregate each store, with an operation like Danny's that includes car maintenance and convenience store at the same location.

rickaz59

@JohnQ.Public Because Danny's (which does not direct deposit any paychecks) requires employees to show up at 11am every Saturday  to collect their salary, even if it's their day off.  I think the check cashing service (that takes a cut) shows up at the same time, since for some of these employees it's difficult to cash a check.

@JohnQ.Public Saturdays are the busiest and when all the illegal workers are in since weekdays are slow and most of the illegals are not working.........just saying, and at least you got your car finished!

@eric.nelson745  I drove by the Danny's gas station at FLW/Scottsdale Road (no car wash) at like 3:30 and there were still feds there with the parking lot blocked off so it took them a while.

@JohnQ.Public I doubt that the feds much cared about that aspect. However, after they hustled the illegals off to the pokey, operations resumed at the car washes. Your would probably have gotten a free mini-detailing.
