ABC 15 Getting Racial-Sensitivity Training After Recent Visit to Lo-Lo's Chicken and Waffles

Now, to the karate studio, where ABC 15 is standing by with relevant opinions on a news story involving Japan.

The editorial staff at ABC 15 will be learning a thing or two about racial sensitivity after the station filmed a segment from Lo-Lo's Chicken and Waffles, where reporters were getting reactions to the verdict in the Trayvon Martin case.

It seemed like out of all the places to find opinions on the case, a chicken and waffles eatery may not have been the best choice, and some people certainly voiced that opinion once the segment ran on TV.

Anita Helt, the vice president and general manager of ABC 15, has since asked local black activist Jarrett Maupin II to come in to talk to the editorial staff, Maupin says.

He tells New Times he's glad the station made the choice to bring him in, and says he's bringing Reverend Luther Holland with him.

For what it's worth, the one white person ABC 15 interviewed in the restaurant agreed with the jury, which found George Zimmerman not guilty of killing the teenager. The two black people disagreed with the verdict.

Perhaps a better place to get opinions on the verdict could have been the multiple marches and protests held in Phoenix, filled with people with such strong opinions about the case that they made a public demonstration out of it.

Racism exists in every demographic, race, culture, nation! Racism is not exclusive to any one its a state of mind that I and mine are better than yours and your dirt in my eyes, sub-human and worthless etc.! One can find white, black, brown, red, yellow and all mixtures of the before mentioned with folks who have a racist mentality of I am better than you and yours!

Here are a few stereotypes compiled for a few sites across the web. May I point out to you that many of the things listed for white stereotypes aren’t really all that negative in my view, especially in comparison to the other two lists? Is that again just because I’m white? Stereotypes about Black people: • Stupid • Irresponsible • Take drugs (crack or weed primarily) • Pregnant as teens • Drop-outs • Incarcerated at some time • Without fathers as children • Love fried chicken, grape drinks, and watermelon • Are better at hard labor • Lazy • More athletic • Violent • Live in the ghetto or projects • Loud, obnoxious, rude • Never smile • Nappy hair • Bad attitudes, disrespectful • Hoodlums • Poor • Obese if female • Dirty • Smell funny • Sexual deviants • Jewelry (over-sized chains & rings) • Own a gun • Low job expectations • Speak English poorly or Ebonics • Stereotypes about White people: • Eating disorders • Trailer trash, rednecks • Very proper • Sense of entitlement, power • Always think they’re right • Rich with big houses • Have better jobs • Are all racists • Are smarter • Priority is staying in a relationship • Drink a lot of beer • No rhythm • Like classic rock or pop • Hate rap unless sung by someone white • Serial killers • Suicidal • Can’t discipline their kids • Use Drugs (preferring crack, ecstasy, LSD, PCP over weed) • Were the origin of AIDS • Are more liable to be gay • Stuck-up • Nerds • Always in a hurry and on time • Impatient, rude • Scared • Can’t dress • Not funny • Not athletic • Get plastic surgery • Overly serious • Smell funny • Blush • Stereotypes about Latino people: • Construction workers • Flirtatious and disrespectful to woman • Are “wetbacks” • family-oriented • dangerous, gang members • Tattooed • Taking over everything • Fill cars with people • Illegal immigrants • Hard labor workers • Do a lot of odd jobs (handyman) • Stealing music • Thieves • Ruthless • Jewelry (primarily chains) • Greasy hair • Spicy food • Run-down houses • Have little intelligence • Are nosy • Have too many kids • Are on welfare or food stamps

My Racist? Take On…well, Race. Its patrons would probably tell you ABC15 here in Phoenix were more correct than not when it asked their reporters to interview folks inside the Lo-Lo's Chicken & Waffles restaurant in Scottsdale what their feeling on the Zimmerman trial verdict was. If their intent was to gain "black perspective" and get the most passionate responses possible on-air; and I believe it was. I don't know if those who’ve seen it noticed, but everyone in the joint was indeed black. Is it racist to suggest reporters seek white perspective at Olivia Newton John concerts or a Ruth Chris Steakhouse? Don't get me wrong, ABC15 is doing the right thing in asking their people to take racial sensitivity classes. It’s so easy to overlook something you just don’t get in the first place. I’d seriously point out though, that I found it funny and sad at the same time. Everyone knows stereotypes are sometimes a little true. They start out somewhere and what's really so wrong with them people bemusing a few harmless stereotypes mistakenly stumbled upon? Why label someone a racist or insensitive simply because they believe another race trends to do more of one particular thing than another? Are they racist because they noticed, or is it only that there is no evidence backing their belief? There’s data enough on both sides of the coin, I am quite sure. Hmm, does this mean I need sensitivity class as well? I think everyone's a little racist, although like most none KKK attending freewill loving, majority advantaged white dudes; such as myself, would claim not when asked. I’ve always seen people naturally separate from those that where different. I’ve seen it in places like school classroom, workplaces, theaters, sports games, automobile choices, in music choices, and the list goes on. I've no PHD or linkable study to back any of my clams up, it’s just what I see… or perceive to have seen, from my white, middle-aged, male perspective. I don’t want to think about race, and black people, from what I’m told can’t help but consider daily. I wouldn't mind being asked what I thought about James Taylor, or what suntan lotion smells best, so what’s the big deal? Then again, I realize that I just don't get it. I can’t get it any more that how a straight person could understand what it is to be gay. All I can continue to do is try and sympathize with what they continue to struggle with, and empathize as best I can, but I will never truly “get it”. Just because I’m 100% incapable of seeing the world through eyes other than mine own, or walking a mile in their shoes; does this mean I’m expected to be at Def-Con 4 at all times with concern over the feelings of others? Honestly, people are just so overly sensitive these days, and I find all the PC a little ridiculous. Just do the right thing by giving people the benefit of doubt when first meeting, try being colorblind, and treat others as you most want to be treated in return. It doesn’t take a god, book, or federal law to do that. Everyone deserves to be judge individually for his or her deeds, and it really shouldn’t be that hard, but is. As for ABC15 ethnic faux pas; politically correctness has made us a nation of extremely thin skinned citizens; unable talk about basic ethnic propensities and intrinsic racial differences we all know exist. Some are just outright wrong, but tell me you think them all to be so. May I point out; many white stereotypes aren’t really all that negative in my view, especially with comparison to those of black or Latino. Is that again, simply because I’m white?, I guess.

This state constantly surprises me with how terrible the news is. Instead of sensitivity training how about everybody goes back to journalism school?

If i want to interview black people where should I go? A Pearl Jam concert? This is a little stupid. Im curious what Ch15 found when they walked in. Were there a bunch of black folks? If so, let it go.

Perhaps we should go about dressed as Robin Hood's merry men, singing the Internationale, and referring to public property as "the People's" this or that.

Hmm... I am perusing the Wiki page on Marxism and "cultural Marxism" has no entry. Classical Marxism, academic Marxism, political Marxism, structural, autonomous, not to mention the various charismatic leaders associated with Marxism, but nothing for "cultural marxism." I think Wikipedia needs James Wasil's help.

I honestly cannot contain my rage right now. Like.. I was calm until I watched the video from the news. Could they have seriously avoided broadcasting 900 videos of black people eating fried chicken during a commentary about the Trayvon controversy? I can see it now..

"OK guys. We gotta find some pissed off black people to interview for our piece. Now where are we gonna find black people right now?"

"The Trayvon Martin marches going on all over town?"
"No."
"The community center?"
"No."
"OOH OOH I know.. there's GOTTA be black people at Lo-Lo's Chicken and Waffles! I know because I saw some one time when we went after work!"

"You're a genius! Quick, let's get the cameras down to Lo-Lo's Chicken and Waffles so we can talk to some authentic black people about sensitive subjects that they're probably already pissed off about, while they are trying to have a nice dinner with their families!"

I'm pretty sure that's how it happened. Seriously, though, what the hell is wrong with Phoenix?

Print and broadcast media would do well to heed the lessons of history for what sociological factors motivate, instigate and/or promote individual and/or mass killing in a society.

The movie Act of Killing, playing only this week at the Camelview 5 in Scottsdale brings Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States to life even though the movie is about the mass killing of between 1 million and 2.5 million Indonesians in the 1960s.

Perhaps ABC15 staff and executive management would do well to take THAT lesson to heart.

logicman

If they were looking for black people to interview, this is probably a good spot to look.  Better odds than the Scottsdale library anyway

Okay geniuses, now listen up:  Where's the article about the 3 black (or should I say "N") kids who beat an innocent white kid sensless on a school bus in Florida while the black driver did nothing??? Here's a few links you should see:

http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/05/justice/florida-school-bus-beating/index.html

http://www.wjla.com/articles/2013/08/florida-school-bus-beating-video-driver-criticized-for-not-stepping-in-92322.html

So, where's that race-baiter Al Sharpton, the Department of Justice and the Zimmerman protesters now to support the white kid who was beaten by those black kids?  Well?????

If the attackers had been white and the boy who was beaten black, you can best bet that not onlty would that BLACK bus driver had stepped in, but there would be riots in the streets of Florida and nationwide by the same anarchist Zimmerman protesters.  It's pretty Interesting and coincidental that the dumb-ass BLACK bus driver resigned after the incident.

The DOJ must investigate the case and prosecute those three little black Sambos with the same hate crime they wanted to charge Zimmerman with.  Only difference is, Zimmerman will never be charged by the DOJ because there is no reason to charge him being that not only was he found not guilty, there has never been any evidence that he shot Trayvon Martin for anything racial.

However, this is different because those black boys clearly beat that white boy for racial reasons.  Now they must pay. They must be charged as adult under federal hate crime statutes.

Do you complende?

@shadeaux14 @JoeArpaioFan You mean to tell me you don't like the truth?  Yeah I did it alright - I am going to expose all you dumbass race-baiters. So, do you feel outrage over the beating of that white kid by those 3 black hoodlums?  Too bad the kid didn't have a gun or he could have invoked Stand your Grounds and shot those little bastards. Before you express any more rage over the Zimmerman case you better start expressing rage over the case I refer to above.
