Should Senator Don Shooter See a Jail Cell for His Episode at a Yuma School?

State Senator Don Shooter

Republican state Senator Don Shooter has been charged with three misdemeanors for his outburst earlier this year at a Yuma school his grandson attends.

Shooter was at the school trying to get access to his grandson's teacher, and ended up barging into her classroom to confront her.

He tried to explain to everyone that he was not just any man, but Don Shooter, which should have expedited this process (in the mind of Don Shooter, and Don Shooter only).

Shooter stuck a finger in the teacher's face, while giving her a talking-to about how his grandson should be treated, but he calmed things down a bit once a cellphone camera started recording.

The teacher told police that she felt threatened and feared for her own safety and the safety of one of her students.

Shooter's charged with criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct, and interfering with an educational institution.

Now, let's say, totally hypothetically, that Shooter's totally guilty.

Should he go to jail for this?

Yes... these legislators need to learn that not only do the laws apply to them , they should be held to a higher standard.

If I did what he did . dollars to donuts, I would be in jail or in intensive care at the hospital fighting for my life.

Why do the most un-American assholes always dress up like a flag? JT and his buttboy Russell Pearce did the same thing. If they aren't careful, they'll turn the Flag into a symbol of hate.

No. Come on Nanny Staters. He should resign like the rest of state legislature after the 2013 session, but jail is overkill. Stop making legal judgments based on someone's party affiliation.

As critical as I've been abaout Shooter's conduct, three misdemeanors arising from one incident isn't going to usually land someone in jail.  A deferred conviction with requirements to complete an anger management program and community service would be appropriate, which is similar to what most defendants should be able to negotiate in a situation like this.  While he shouldn't be let off any easier than anyone else because he is a State Senator, he shouldn't be treated more harshly either.

He really needs to check out tent city in July.

When does the ethics investigation by the Legislature start?

But if he were a Democrat you would be saying he should not see a jail cell now wouldn't you?

I haven't seen or heard anything about an investigation into the allegations made against the mexican teacher which started this whole thing. it was accused of "bullying and humiliating" a special education student which prompted the shooter guy to go to the school. maybe the crack team here at the porno pennysaver can do a little work for a change and look into the allegations made against the teacher and determine if an investigation was done and if there were any results from the investigation. some details about the allegations would be good as well.

I wonder where Dandy Don lives today. Is he still faking he lives in a condo away from his family? Don is a fake right from the start. Just part off the never ending one party dictatorship that will do anything to stay in power.

How about "No, because why should we pay to feed and house him for even a day, particularly for such a minor violation".

He shouldn't go for long, but he should sit in a cell for a least a week.

He should also be jailed for flag desecration and felony bad taste.

You do believe in gun rights, don't you? Or are you one of them "finish the dang fence" kinda people?

jonnyquest

Now if the laws were right in this state and school personnel could arm themselves, this story would have had a happy ending.

@Robert Yeo  How do you figure?  You think the teacher wouldn't have been able to restrain herself from physically attacking you, or you don't think you would have had the good sense to leave before the police rolled in?

Do you think Shooter is the first parent to ever yell at a teacher?   It happens.  It doesn't make the news unless the parent is enough of a blowhard to announce that he thinks he's a big shot. and it's not the sort of thing they waste jail cells for.

@Jerry Cardenas Yes, and the cops would have been at the school before other people even left the building. He does have a history of carrying a fire arm where it's not allowed, after all.

@JoeArpaioFan nope, party affiliation doesnt matter...as you haters say all the time, "illegal is illegal"

@jonnyquest

A man comes into the room angry and yelling.

If you think that justifies shooting, I hope you don't carry.

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@WhoKnows  Absolute nonsense.  Nobody would be jailed for this, unless they had a really bad prior record, and the police would not have slowed their response time if they thought anybody was in danger simply because the perpetrator was in the State government.  It's simply stupid to believe otherwise.  Imagine the fallout if anybody had been injured and they had been slow to respond.

I get it VN. You're a hope and change kinda guy. Still got your McCain/Palin button?

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@jonnyquest Cops are smarter than you.  They can take advantage of their specialized training to find a solution that falls somewhere between sitting down for a chat and shooting you.

Really, this stuff isn't complicated.

jonnyquest
jonnyquest topcommenter

You're right. The cop would sit down and reason with him.

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@jonnyquest If he walks up to a cop and starts yelling at him, the cop is going to shoot him?

You should really think before you type.

jonnyquest
jonnyquest topcommenter

Well, your theory about Don Shooter's assumptions sound good. Maybe he'll test their validity on a cop. Bet that would make the news. Goodnight VN.

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@jonnyquest  jonny, What you don't understand is that Shooter carries concealed.  That means he knows that people who carry concealed aren't really going to shoot you just for yelling at them.  Particularly not a teacher in her classroom.

Yes, he's an asshole.  I'm not disputing that.  You're saying a lot of nonsense though.  If the teacher had been armed, nothing would have happened differently.

The tool that shut him up was a camera.  It was much more effective and much safer than a gun would have been.

jonnyquest
jonnyquest topcommenter

If Don Shooter thought he would end up with a hole in his ass like Mary Rose Wilcox, would he have tried to push around a woman half his size? Again, Shooter is just an asshole, who should be kicked out of office.

jonnyquest
jonnyquest topcommenter

What I meant was that Don Shooter is a fucking asshole. AN ASSHOLE! Thuggish behavior is hateful from anyone. More so from a "public servant". No, shooting wouldn't have been justified. But Shooter is a bully. And bullies are cowards. If the teacher was built like Mike Tyson, you think any of this would have happened?

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@jonnyquest  Sure.  You weren't implying that the school personnel would have shot him at all.

If not what did you mean?  That they would assault him with a deadly weapon (again in front of the students) to hold him against his will until the police arrived?  How would that have been a happier ending?

jonnyquest
jonnyquest topcommenter

I checked my posts and I didn't find anything about shooting anybody. Maybe I missed it.

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@WhoKnows put away your blinding anger and think about this logically.

1. There's a big difference between carrying into a State building, where he is an "employee", and carrying into a school.

2. There is no reason to suspect he was carrying.

3. There is no reason to believe that that he would have drawn unless his life was being threatened.

4. There is no reason to believe that the school employees suspected he had a gun

 5. If the police had believed that there was significant danger of physical violence, they would have responded just as quickly for this imbecile as for any ordinary citizen.   State legislators really don't get free reign to beat up teachers.

Do you honestly believe that if the police believed that there was a chance that he would shoot somebody, that they would hold off because of who he was?

Seriously?  Are you that far out of touch with reality?

WhoKnows
WhoKnows topcommenter

@valleynative @WhoKnows It is ILLEGAL to carry concealed in a school.  Shooter had been caught trying to do so in state buildings already.

And if he was carrying in a school in his "aggravated" state, who knows what could have happened.  It didn't happen, but for most people, the cops would have been on the scene within minutes.

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@WhoKnows  So in your imagination, anybody carrying a concealed weapon is going to start shooting if he gets angry?   If that was really true, there really would be blood running in the streets all day, every day There are a hell of a lot more of us than you seem to realize and we sometimes become angry.  Somehow, me manage to control the urge to spend the rest of our lives in prison, though.

Do you really believe that the person who called the police had any idea that Shooter had been known to carry concealed, anyway?

WhoKnows
WhoKnows topcommenter

@valleynative @WhoKnows You don't think the cops would have been called if a normal person who was known to carry a concealed weapon where it's not allowed burst past the school security?
