ABC 15 Goes to Chicken and Waffles Restaurant for Trayvon Martin Segment: Is It Racist?

ABC 15

When news broke the George Zimmerman was found not guilty in the killing of black teenager Trayvon Martin, Phoenix's ABC affiliate had reaction interviews -- straight from Lo-Lo's Chicken & Waffles.

Some people thought was an insensitive move, as chicken and waffles has been used as a stereotype to portray a negative image of African-Americans.

To ABC 15's credit, they did interview a white guy at Lo-Lo's, although he said George Zimmerman wasn't guilty of anything.

Where should they have gone to find a group of black people available for comment on the case in the middle of the day?  Suggesting this is racist is a form of racism all by itself.

I love Lo-Lo's.  Can't eat there very  often because you just know the fried chicken is too good to be healthy, but boy is it good.  And the Kool-Aid - goes perfect with the chicken.

From "Avenue Q" **Everyone's A Little Bit Racist** Princeton: Say, Kate, can I ask you a question? Kate Monster: Sure! Princeton: Well, you know Trekkie Monster upstairs? Kate Monster: Uh huh. Princeton: Well, he's Trekkie Monster, and you're Kate Monster. Kate Monster: Right. Princeton: You're both Monsters. Kate Monster: Yeah. Princeton: Are you two related? Kate Monster: What?! Princeton, I'm surprised at you! I find that racist! Princeton: Oh, well, I'm sorry! I was just asking! Kate Monster: Well, it's a touchy subject. No, not all Monsters are related. What are you trying say, huh? That we all look the same to you? Huh, huh, huh? Princeton: No, no, no, not at all. I'm sorry, I guess that was a little racist. Kate Monster: I should say so. You should be much more careful when you're talking about the sensitive subject of race. Princeton: Well, look who's talking! Kate Monster: What do you mean? Princeton: What about that special Monster School you told me about? Kate Monster: What about it? Princeton: Could someone like me go there? Doesn't mean we go Around committing hate crimes. Look around and you will find No one's really color blind. Maybe it's a fact We all should face Everyone makes judgments Based on race. Princeton: Now not big judgments, like who to hire or who to buy a newspaper from - Kate Monster: No! So, everyone's a little bit racist Okay! Ethinic jokes might be uncouth, But you laugh because They're based on truth. Don't take them as Personal attacks. Everyone enjoys them - So relax! Princeton: All right, stop me if you've heard this one. Kate Monster: Okay! Princeton: There's a plan going down and there's only one paracute. And there's a rabbi, a priest... Kate Monster: And a black guy! Gary Coleman: Whatchoo talkin' 'bout Kate? Kate Monster: Uh... Gary Coleman: You were telling a black joke! Princeton: Well, sure, Gary, but lots of people tell black jokes. Gary Coleman: I don't. Princeton: Well, of course you don't - you're black! But I bet you tell Polack jokes, right? Princeton: Oh, Christ do I feel good. Gary Coleman: Now there was a fine upstanding black man! Princeton: Who? Gary Coleman: Jesus Christ. Kate Monster: But, Gary, Jesus was white. I saw that news report and thought the same thing. Wht did they specifically go to THAT restaurant? To get a specific demographic is why. To hopefully get an unrefined ethnic person's opinion and use it to downplay an entire group. To promote stereotypes and feed the racial division that is still prevalent in society and openly use it as entertainment.

Hopefully someday we won't have to even ask this question, let alone consider it :-/

Who will stand to stone the vulture? They have no purpose here. This is my purpose. And this is my wind. The morning sloth, smelled very much like maple syrup. Will somebody please tell Penny Lane that it is pudding time? I gave her an Elixir Diamond Ring, and she made me Electric with sexual devices. Nothing comes unannounced, because I dance like a submarine with sailors who wear disguises and drum away at the hull once the engine said "bomb" on an airplane. I took a Bloody Mary Blood Bath and listened to the Gingivitis, invite us to listen at great length, to the Humming Bees and the Bumble Birds. This is only the beginning. I will bet my Arch Angel Syringe on it. This is the hallway to the Pharaoh's Space Ship. There is no one else now. Just me. And just like that, I was an angry teenager again. The smiles were harder, but they meant so much more- Richard Nihil #nihilarmy #richardnihil #iamhologram https://soundcloud.com/richard-nihil/the-ghost-who-breathed

Why does everything have to be black & white? It's 2013 people! No race is better than the other so now let's all just play nice.

Not intentionally racist, but jeeeesus.. Stupid and not well thought out. I have trouble believing that SOMEONE didn't try to pull the plug on it.

You could make the argument both ways. If a TV station wants to get opinions on SB1070 and immigration reform from Latinos I doubt they would be going to Geisha Sushi in Scottsdale they would probably be going to Ranch Market where many shop for their food. The station obviously wanted to get opinions of African-Americans and went somewhere they felt they would be able to get those opinions. Was going to Lolo's using sound judgment? Probably not because of the obvious stereotype but to try and make this into a race issue is a reach.

Nope, good cross section of people and a great place to eat. Plus free advertising for Lo Lo's

ummmm seriously? Isnt that racist to go to a chicken and waffle place to get opinions on this matter? FYI that place has delicious food, I recommend it!

And, of course if they want to gauge opinion on immigration issues, they would hang out at a Taco Bell? For Senior issues, they'd go to the Metamucil display at a Sun City Frys?

I think it's racist to assume they were going there just for black responses.

First of all I had never heard of combining chicken and waffles I a meal until a few years ago. A co-worker who is white said brother's partner also white is from Texas and it was a Texas thing. Secondly people are getting way too sensitive.

No. There is a diverse group of clientele that goes to Lo-Lo's. What better place to get a response from a wide cross section of society? And I am sure employees of ABC15 wanted some of the food, so why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Justin, the local NAACP chapter is not the spokesperson for black people. They are a political action group for black people. I do not have a problem with the news media going around getting the opinions of some random black folks. And perhaps some whites and hispanics. But going to a stereotype like location was probably not a good idea. Having said that I think we are all to sensative. They wanted to get the opinions of some blacks the easiest route is to go to where a lot of blacks are. I am not familiar with that establishment but if it is an undeniable fact that large numbers if blacks tend to be there..its not really worth the arguement. I dont think they were being racist. I think they were going to a popular location for blacks in that area.

Perhaps Phx New Times should also ask if patrons of that restaurants were insensitive too, eating 'offensive' food? Or poll, of the restaurant itself is insensitive?

At first, I thought it in poor taste, at a minimum. Then I realized that if you want to get the opinion of a number of black people, several "man on the street" if you will, you have to go where they are--- similar to how if you want to interview someone on Superbowl Sunday, where are you going to go?  To a sports bar.  The name of the place or what they may serve is irrelevant.

What I think is a bit racist is the fact that they felt the need to do this--- seek out black people to get a sound bite.   Just because you're black, I want to hear your opinion and splash it on the evening news.  And then we'll also have the token white guy, who of course disagrees with all the black folks.  Anyone who doesn't fit the mold is conveniently edited out.   Way to sow seeds of racial harmony!

But I forgot that sensationalism and Monday morning quarterbacking is what passes for news in our society.
