Trent Franks Says There Aren't That Many Rapes That Result in Pregnancies

Congressman Trent Franks
Anti-abortion fanatic/Congressman Trent Franks thinks the number of rapes that result in pregnancies is "very low."

Franks' comments are now going viral across the county, although it's not surprising for us back home, who have heard Franks belittle Black people, Jews, and women in general, to make points about his hatred of abortion. Now, add rape victims to the list of people Franks has unfairly used for his anti-abortion talking points.

"You know, before, when my friends on the left side of the aisle here tried to make rape and incest the subject -- because, you know, the incidences of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low," Franks said during a House Judiciary Committee hearing.

Arguably, there is no such thing as a "very low" number of rapes resulting in pregnancy -- there either are rapes resulting in pregnancies, or there aren't. And there are.

When another dunce made a similar comment last year, when then-Congressman Todd Akin made a comment about "legitimate rape," reports on the subject found that thousands -- perhaps even tens of thousands -- of rapes result in pregnancies each year.

According to Politico, Franks later claimed that he was saying "pregnancies from rape that result in abortion after the beginning of the sixth month are very rare," and denied saying exactly what he said earlier, so who knows what he's actually trying to say.

We do know that this certainly isn't the first time Franks has made comments that could be deemed offensive to many people, in order to make a point on abortion.

He's said that Black people were better off under slavery than they are now, when abortions are being performed.

While shrugging off the period in which millions of Jews were murdered, Franks says now, with all these abortions, we're all living in the time of the "greatest human holocaust in the history of mankind," and has routinely compared ending abortion with ending the Holocaust.

In his last abortion crusade, activists in Washington D.C. got riled up after Franks proposed a ban on abortions past 20 weeks of gestation in the District. Franks, a Congressman from Arizona, refused to help activists with any other issues in the District, despite Franks' sudden concern for issues in the area.

He's now proposing that 20-week ban be applied nationwide.

Why are Repuglykkkans such lowlife scumbags?

Sorry, but these are outrageous statements originate from a guy that had cleft palate surgery with a meat cleaver. What a disgraceful human being! I wonder if he's trying to overcompensate for something... hmmm...

The world would be a better place if Trent's mom aborted him.

Having been in the same room as Trent Franks recently and after watching him for awhile, all I can say is he is a little strange for sure.

I'm still wondering if Trent Franks has EVER "been" with a woman. The odds are against it!

I hate to sound like I'm defending his statements about abortion, but it's very likely that his original statement was reported out of context, and that it really should have been clear that he was talking in the context of late term abortions.  I don't know, of course, but I do know how easy it is to make somebody seem like a real (or bigger) jerk by quoting them out of context.

Nothing pisses me off more than these idiots who say something on the record, then later deny having said it.  And what is this man's strange obsession with abortions?  Has he no other legislative aspirations?

And just for the record, according to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists:

“Each year in the US, 10,000–15,000 abortions occur among women whose pregnancies are a result of reported rape or incest. An unknown number of pregnancies resulting from rape are carried to term."

@truthseekeraz I don't like his position on abortion, but I voted for him and would do so again. His abortion bills are so outrageous that there is literally no chance of them passing. His obsession is embarrassing to Arizona, but otherwise harmless.   Meanwhile, he helps to block some Democratic bills that might otherwise pass and actually impact my life.

@marcy I've always theorized that Trent's mom told him the same thing, hence his obsession with abortion. Actually most of the anti-abortion men I've known in my life have major mommy issues. Wonder if anyone has done a psychological analysis of these guys...

@valleynative Whether quoted "out of context" or not, HE SAID IT. Trent Franks is cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs on the subject of abortion.

@valleynative Regardless, if he was saying that a woman should not have the right to have an abortion of a fetus that resulted from rape, then he's obviously never dealt with a rape victim. Suppose one of his female family members was raped and became pregnant and then learned she had been infected with several strains of STD from the rapist, as well. Would his attitude about abortion be suddenly different?

Why, I wonder, do we men think we can tell a woman what she needs to do with her body when she becomes pregnant?

If a man wants to offer such advice I would suggest he do so immediately after having given birth.

@saltywench We hope that's the extent of his legislative agenda. God knows what else that twisted little mind might generate.

@eric.nelson745 I agree that he's nuts about this, but context is an important part  of understanding what a person's words mean.  Accepting statements without context is also crazy.

@Tommy_Collins I agree completely.  It's not clear to me whether he thinks that rape victims "asked for it" or are "being punished (or tested) by god" or if he simply doesn't care at all beyond the fact that his voter base is against abortions.

@Tommy_Collins @valleynative

After seeing what he is about, trust me, he has never dealt with anything connected to the real world that happens everyday on the streets let alone any rape situation.

He's pure Bible Thumper.

@MandyMountainIt's not him I worry about so much, it's the dumbasses who keep electing this one-trick idiot to office, despite the fact he's got no other real issues on his agenda.  He makes $174k, district 8 gets nothing in return; easy money.  Oh, and here's his currently sponsored "legislation", including an act of fellatio on the ghost of Ronald Reagan.
