MCSO Detention Officer's Ear Bitten Off by Inmate

A rendering of the Lower Buckeye Jail complex.

An inmate at one of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's jails attacked a detention officer Monday, biting part of her ear "completely off," according to the MCSO.

The officer was doing a cell-search Monday at the Lower Buckeye Jail when 21-year-old Bobby Ruiz jumped on her back and started attacking her, according to the Sheriff's Office.

MCSO Sergeant Brandon Jones tells New Times the officer has been employed by the Sheriff's Office for only little more than a year.

She was hospitalized after the attack and was expected to undergo surgery Monday evening in an attempt to fix the damage.

We'll provide any updates on her condition or on the attack as they come along.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Ruiz was being held in the jail on an aggravated-assault charge, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Ruiz will be on a diet of bread and water for the time being, according to the MCSO.

just saw on ABC15com that Joe bought the inmates pizza for helping the officer. so this comment is completely without sarcasm and is a serious comment. "That was a very commendable thing he did by buying them pizza as a thank you. some of those inmates are guilty and some are innocent, but not all of them are bad people. even though Joe says he wants to make it rough on them and says he refuses to knuckle under, he did and he did in a very important way without seeming weak. I know there will probably even be some flak about his gesture from some of his die hard fans, but he did the right thing. his is a position that he cannot seem weak to his inmates and i feel he did find a gesture that showed NO weakness while retaining a human side. just as not all MCSO employees are a direct reflection of Henderschott, Black, Fox, Abrahmson and some others.............not all inmates are a reflection of Ruiz. I CANNOT and will NOT find fault in his gesture of thanks to those inmates. I am not asking him to NOT do his job when i go off on him, I am asking him to be fair and humane in his job, and he has just shown what i mean. if this was the kind of Joe that he could remain, that is the Joe i might just support. not everyone in his jail is a hardened criminal (some are just people who have had a run of bad luck) and even some of the people who have committed crimes arenot bad people, and as i sit here and defend them, i will also take a minute and defend him for this action. to me it shows what he could be capable of and makes me hope to see more of THIS Joe Arpaio. by this gesture alone he is actually showing what Russell Pearce tried to use (erroniously) while describing Simcox ......sometimes good people do stupid things.........and they are paying for it Joe, and you rewarding them with pizza demonstrates that you also believe there is some good in everyone and that people can change. so for all the inmates and their families that you just showed your human side to...........THANK YOU, and my hat is off to you for what you just did"

"Ruiz will be on a diet of bread and water for the time being, according to the MCSO."

I don't think this is actually true, as there are nutritional requirements for all inmates in jail/prison.  Some jails, as punishment, server slices of a "loaf" that is a mixture of things to meet the nutritional requires, that's not known to be very tasty.  This stuff sounds worse than just bread.  Good!

From wikipedia:

Nutraloaf, sometimes called prison loafdisciplinary loaffood loafconfinement loafseg loaf, or special management meal, is a food served in United States prisons to inmate who have demonstrated significant behavioral issues. It is similar to meatloaf in texture, but has a wider variety of ingredients. Prisoners may be served nutraloaf if they have assaulted prison guards or fellow prisoners. Prison loaf is usually bland, perhaps even unpleasant, but prison wardens argue that nutraloaf provides enough nutrition to keep prisoners healthy without requiring utensils to be issued.

well, if you treat people like caged animals dont be shocked when they actually start acting like one..

I heard that other inmates jumped in to help the DO, which I find is very honorable considering they were inmates.

This is terrible.

Perhaps Arpaio should consider serving edible food in his jails?

You have to assume that he enjoys prison life and never wants to have to leave.

Probably a sexual thing.

STUPID INMATE SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN A SERIOUS ASS WHIPPING. AND THAT BEATING SHOULD BE EXTREMELY SEVERE. AND INSTEAD OF BEING GIVEN BREAD AND WATER HE SHOULD GET NOTHING. I HOPE THAT THE BREAD HE IS BEING GIVEN IS DROPPED ON THE FLOOR AND STEPPED ON SEVERAL TIMES. FUCKING WETBACK PUTO!

@WhoKnows   In Navy brigs you can only be on bread and water for 3 days. On the 4th day they could feed you and then on the 5th back to bread and water.

@WhoKnows HE SHOULD BE ON A "NO FOOD" RESTRICTION. BUT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BREAD, ESPECIALLY IF IT WAS STEPPED ON FIRST. HE SHOULD SUFFER A NASTY BEATING FOR HIS STUPID ACTIONS.

@david_saint01 Chicken or the egg argument, eh?

One could argue this character acted like an animal prior to being caged.

@Cozz That fact, along with the officer being new to MCSO, makes me wonder if the inmate was provoked. Just speculation, but it seems the veteran DO's who are burned out are more likely to provoke. Only cameras will tell, but I'm thinking this was a freak thing by a particularly "disgruntled" inmate...I hope!

@Cozz you dont hear about it often, but it happens more than one would think. you have people like JAF who think everyone in jail  is evil and guilty, but there are plenty of innocent people in Joe's custody who are waiting for trial to prove their innocence and are good people. when you have people like JAF screaming for the abuse of inmates they dont consider it was one inmate that attacked her, but 10 or 15 that saved her

You need to be put in a cage with one of them and taught a lesson.

@jbunny

I watched the interview of her and she didn't at all sound like someone that provoked anything. She actually sounded like a nice person. I hope this doesn't change her to much.

Had I been witness to that situation, I would have done the same thing.

@Cozz @jbunny I don't know, being new on the job and being attacked like that can mess with your head, to say the least.

@jbunny our compassion for other human beings is what seperates us from lower life forms.........that and thumbs, (i dont know if JAFfy has thumbs, but i know he lacks compassion)

@danzigsdaddy all right, you and Cozz are guilting me into this, but I suppose I'd call 911 and grudgingly admit to myself that I did the right thing. :-)

@Cozz @danzigsdaddy  had I been there for the "killer sidewalk" I would have still rendered aid.............would have snickered afterwards............but still would have helped another human being (or Joe in this case)

@danzigsdaddy

Yea, I have to admit, as much as I dislike Arpaio and all that he stands for, if I saw the old bastard needing emergency medical help, I would use all the EMS training I have on him to save his life.

Might hate myself afterwards, but it would be the right thing to do and I couldn't walk away in good conscience knowing I didn't do anything at all.

@Cozz I'll be honest..............I'd even jump in to save Arpaio or JAFfy. they deserve justice not an assault. as much as they may need one, it still isnt right.
