Maricopa County Mugshots of the Week: Not-So-Minor Details

mugs.jpg

At the end of the week, we bring you a roundup of visitors to the desert's own Fourth Avenue Jail. To be considered for our Maricopa County mugshots of the week, get arrested, strike a pose, and we'll take care of the rest.

This week, all of our alleged offenders would look like they would probably fit into society just fine, were it not for one glaring detail. Enjoy.

10.)

Charges: DUI
See, the "187" means "murder," and the "5-0" means "police." We're sure this guy gets off with warnings all the time.

9.)

Charges: Assault
That awkward moment when someone tries to pick you up and place you in a trash can because your head looks like moldy bread.

8.)
mugsjune28-8.jpg

Charges: Resisting arrest
"Officer, I was just BbzzzzZZzzzZzzzzzZZZ. . . "

7.)

Charges: Probation violation
Well, one reason would be because you ran into this guy in a dark alley.

JohnQ.Public looks at these because they resemble his Family Album.

But it occurrs to me, if this feature were running when Lacey and Larkin were arrested by Joe's goons in the middle of the night on trumped-up, bullshit charges, would you have included their mugshots in the mugshots of the week with a pithy caption?

There you go again, Matthew, picking on and making fun of unconvicted arrestees.  Can you tell which one of these individuals is mentally ill, just like Marty Atencio was?  No??? Didn't think so.

I can't figure it out.  On the one hand you and Lemons rail against Arpaio but on the other hand you lap at the trough of enforcement by public humiliation that he dishes out.  Seems a bit hypocritical, doesn't it, to on the one hand lambast him for being the bumbling racist idiot he is yet on the other hand pick mugshots off his website for a Friday morning cheapie, low-effort space filler.  Let me put it this way, it is just as big an act of Arpaio ass-kissing to pull mugshots of unconvicted arrestees from Arpaio's 20th centruy version of the town square stockade every week as it was for Niki D'Andrea to write her fluff piece on Arpaio in Phoenix Magazine.  At least D'Andrea's ass-kissing article appeared once - you keep going back to the well week after week after week.  Does that put it into perspective for you?

For all the good work you do as a journalist, you should be embarrassed to put your by line this garbage.

And for transparency sake, why not just tell your readers exactly where you get this cheapie from?  Here's the source:  http://www.mcso.org/Mugshot/Default.aspx.  Why not tell them that you just pick off the mug shot of the day from the website and write some pithy, mean-spirited comments and call that an article?  Tell them now that they can expect to see Acey Rockwell on this page next week because voters on the MCSO website voted him mugshot of the day yesterday and you're grabbing his image off the MCSO website this afternoon.  Sure he's not convicted of anything and the point of this piece is just to further Joe's public humiliation of him, but what the hell - it makes for riveting journalism, doesn't it?

@marcy Does it matter?  But I see your point - we should only belittle people we think are funny looking.  Its all in good fun, right, and I'm sure moldy hair lady would completely agree.

@JohnQ.Public The Bzzzzzz one could well be an unDx'd untreated diabetic.  As for dental issues - most employers these days don't pay enough to buy the plan. . . . drip drip drip . . . criminalization of poverty. . . . . character assassination of poverty's victims. . . . . CCA contracts fulfilled no complaints . . . no ethically challenged observers . . . . drip drip drip.

Dumbass, please! This is hardly kissing Joe Arpaio's wrinkled ass, like D'andrea did.  Every week you write, and every week, nobody gives a shit what you think. If you're so proud of your opinions, why not own them with your real name. And what's your point? This guy is hardly some poor, illegal alien held for no apparent reason by Joe's mafia. Shut your sanctimonious piehole, fool. Who cares where Hendley gets these. They're entertaining. Keep up the good work New Times!

@yourproductsucks I guess what it comes down to is that I wouldn't walk up to a woman with blue die in her hair and say, "Hey, your hair looks like moldy bread." That would be rude, meanspirited and just plain dickish.  If it's rude, meanspirited and dickish to do it in person, it is even ruder, more meanspirited and more dickish to do it online because instead of just saying it to the individual or to a small audience, it's being broadcast to the entire world.

If you think its OK to be meanspirited and dickish, that's fine. If Matthew thinks its OK to be meanspirited and  dickish when he leans over his cubicle wall and makes a snide comment to Lemons, I guess that's OK too (we all do that on occassion). What I don't think is OK is using the privilege of being a writer for an established publication/website and having this platform to be rude, meanspirited and dickish in front of a worldwide audience.

So Matthew, I guess that the question that you have to ask yourself is this, how big a dick, how rude and how meanspirited a person do you want to be?

@JohnQ.Public @yourproductsucks So you are offended by Hendley making fun of people's hair styles and tattoo's?  Or just general physical appearance?

I don't recall you standing up against the ageism that runs rampant on these threads...

@yourproductsucks The difference is that those are articles discussing the entire case/arrest/situation/issues/circumstances while this is just making fun of people based on how they look.  Take the False Profit article to which you refer - 6 pages of reporting on the issues while this just posts pictures and makes fun of them without any further insight or information.   Notice that I don't have any complaints about when PNT posts a mugshot along with an actual article about the individual and the charges filed against him or her.

By my standards, as articulated here, everyone can comment on Laughner because volumes have been written about him AND his mental illness - you wouldn't just be making fun of a guy's goofy picture and calling him a wackjob based on a photo like Matthew does in the captions here.   I respond to commenters on these boards (poke fun at them as you describe it) based on their comments and opinions, not on how they look or their tattoos or the color of their hair.  I might get derisive in my comments at times, but it is about the opinions presented, not a commenter's appearance.  I think these are big differences.

@JohnQ.Public If you were at least consistant in your reproach of such activity you'd be just as vocal when Lemons writes about the arrests of figures like Simcox or when Alonso trashes an otherwise unconvicted preacher.

By your standards, no one can comment on Loughner, because he's unconvicted and mentally ill.

Hendley has this and sports commentary, and nothing else.  Who are you to deny him of 50% of his bread and butter?

You poke fun at posters here on this site, not knowing which of them is mentally ill...but you do it nonetheless.  Enough with the holier than tho attitude when it comes to these stupid photos and the admittedly clever ancedotes attached to them.

My favorite was the "Nice Purse" comment last week.  I still chuckle out loud thinking about it.

@tonydelbert See Matthew, there you go.  Tony is totally entertained by these and I'm just a dumbass so keep them up.  I'm sure you're delighted to know that this feature appeals to the lowest common denominator of your readership.
