Drunk driving is bad.

With that out of the way, here's where police will be setting up "saturation patrols" around the Valley, looking for impaired drivers this weekend and early next week:

We'll provide the (very lengthy) list of DUI patrols next week for July 4 and the ensuing weekend, so here are all the patrols in the Valley leading up to that:

  • From 7 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. today, Saturday, and again starting on Wednesday, the Salt River Police Department will be at Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community/Scottsdale border, around the Walmart at Pima Road and Chaparral Road.

    • On Wednesday, the Phoenix Police Department will have six different locations for its patrols, many of them based in QT convenience-store parking lots, from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.

    • Outside the Valley: Gila River Police will be having patrols in an undisclosed location in the Gila River Indian Community on Friday and Saturday, and police will be at the World's Oldest Rodeo and Prescott Frontier Days in Prescott for the whole week, from Monday through next Sunday (July 7).

And the drivers stopped must be asked to show a drivers license. Drivers that do not have a drivers license and drivers who when asked if they have been drinking who respond by saying "no complende" should be immediately questioned as to their immigration status.

I had the "pleasure" of joining a few people for dinner earlier in the week.  One was a ruddy faced contractor who proceeded to put away 3 32oz beers and a 12 oz beer over a period of an hour.  He told us he'd already been drinking before we ate, he bragged about how drinking didn't affect him (in other words he was an alcoholic).  Afterwards he got in his truck with his girlfriend and his girlfriend's 10 year old daughter and drove home.

Was he sober, absolutely not.  He probably would have blown a 0.16 or higher but as a boozer he was steady on his feet and could drive pretty well.  What he and other boozers don't understand is that while they can get in a familiar car and drive a familiar route from their favorite watering hole to home better than a "novice" drunk, their ability to react to an unexpected event, such as a car turning in front of them or someone walking across the road or traffic suddenly stopping, is seriously impaired.

With that said, pretext stops and DUI checkpoints are not the way to address impaired drivers,

Must be a sudden shortage of real crime for cops to deal with lol.

If someone wants to comment suicide, it's a private deal, but if that someone gets on the road drunk I take that personally.

@JoeArpaioFan if they said "no complende" as you are suggesting, it might indicate them being drunk since there is no such word.. there would be no need for a immigration status check..............sobriety test maybe, but no indication to check citizenship
