Did Jeff Flake's Apple Fall Far From the Tree?

Senator Jeff Flake
In case you missed it, Republican Senator Jeff Flake's 15-year-old son has made a whole lot of racist and homophobic comments on the Internet.

In addition to using words like "faggot," "Jew," and "beaner" on social media, Tanner Flake's handle in an iPhone game was "N1ggerKiller."

Between folks we've talked to about it, and people commenting on New Times' blog posts, there seems to be a lot of debate over whether the teen got this kind of mentality from his pop, and if his dad's responsible in some way (speaking of which, this kid better come up with one hell of a Father's Day Present).

If parents were to blame for every stupid thing ever done in the history of teenagers, then most parents in this country are total assholes.

However, a kid's parents aren't to blame for everything, and there are instances where it doesn't look like the kid's picking up his dad's attitude.

For example, Flake seems to be making a legitimate effort as one of the leaders for immigration reform, while his kid is at home on the computer spouting off about "beaners."

What do you think: did Flake's apple fall far from the tree?

hey, journalism at it's finest.  NOT.  This is cheap journalism.  I'm no fan of Jeff  Flake, but this is a kid, leave him alone.  picking on a kid to get to his dad is tasteless.  go find a real story.

FULLY RESPONSIBLE! Kids learn from their friends, tv, and radio, but it's up to their parent to teach them right from wrong. This shows what kind of father he is. Tanner has issues, but he'd rather spend time kissing his rich buddy's assess over spending quality time with his family. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KHMVxxl5MM

Jeff's kids are social lepers.  I remember playing in a softball tourney and seeing this moron come out to play left field in a complete D-Backs uniform (stirrup socks and all)...It was the older Flake boy and it was hilarious.

Have any of you had a 15 year old, they act out in all kids of ways. But his parents should let him know, his behavior is not expectable. His could be just trying to embarrass is family, too.

I hope you realize the stupidity of this statement. Ignorance is lack of knowledge. You can't be taught a lack of knowledge. So actually you are born infinitely ignorant.

Abso-friggin-lutley! Apples never fall far from the tree. Kids do not feel that strongly unless their parents have the same and/or similar views!

In the real world, kids, especially teenagers, will often push, break and shatter the boundaries and standards they are taught to discover for themselves what they believe is right and wrong based on experience rather than "because Mom and Dad said so." Nowadays, that often gets played out in the large venue of social media, which takes a family matter into the spotlight. But that's where the conversation should end, IMHO. I don't like Jeff Flake's politics. But I don't know how he participates in his home life. My 2 cents: If he lets his kid get away with it, he's wrong. If he disciplines his son because of how this affects HIS political career, he's still wrong. I don't know what he'll do and it's none of my business - it's his family life.

Hehe. Flake's wife had better be tellin' the kid, "wait until your father gets home."

Yes! When you consider that kids reflect what they learn at home. So if you teach your kids to hate, they will hate.

WHEN YOU WORK FOR A RACIST POLITICAL PARTY AND PROUDLY REPRESENT A RACIST STATE,

Don't be surprised when your son turns out to be a racist.

David Robinson

Racist?? Dear god what the hell are you all talking about? And if he were a democrat no one would be talking about this. The new times is so blatantly biased that they have to play up something like this. I hope his son gets help because suicide is a serious thing. Is senator flake responsible? Maybe indirectly. The life of a politician is extremely demanding and his son may have felt neglected and this was a way of reaching out. I have to facts for that guess, only speculation. The point is, you can't blame Jeff flake the politician for this.

Well I'm sorry to disagree with everybody, but I remember back to when I was 15 and I pretty much wanted to "say" and "do" EVERYTHING the opposite of what my parents wanted. Just a thought...

Yes, they need to be taught to own their choices (and consequences) and not blame others. Too much of that these days.

A parent is responsible for the actions of their children. Period.

Whether the son learned this from the parents or not, it is now their responsibility to straighten him out! He is still only 15 and not an adult. If they can't handle it, may I suggest counseling.

Anyone with kids now that you can only do your best. There is no way to control how a child interprets their surroundings. It's ultimately up to the child to own their choices.

I am surprised that anyone is surprised by this news given the policies of our elected officials. In fact, these values seems pretty in concert with the actions of our politicians! One might ask, why do WE keep electing them...?

Yup! That and his social group. Racism is rampant in this state, & this country. Chances are the people he runs with are from racist households/neighborhoods, or even his church group instill bigotry.

@David Robinson I blame Jeff Flake the father!

Always good to hear from a Teabagger idiot who thinks right-wing, pro-gun-congrol liars like Flake can do no wrong. The real truth, Dense David, is that it's you who would be calling for the hide of any Democrat whose son acted like this. But when it's one of your own, you want to claim it's soooooo unfair. Hey, everybody reported this, after New Times got the scoop. Stop crying little girl, pussy.

@Jim Oakes Did youir parent pay for an iPhone and Internet access so you could be stupid on a national level?  Seems the parent here should have been watching their spoiled brat much closer.

@WhoKnows From the looks of the picture, I'd say neither cell phones nor the internet was around whilst Jim was a boy.
