Phoenix SWAT Team Rams House, Kidnapping Suspect Shoots Himself During the Raid
The Phoenix Police Department's SWAT team rammed a house Tuesday morning with a giant truck, trying to storm the home after 32-year-old Israel Celis Sr. allegedly kidnapped his own child and beat his wife in a hotel room.
An Amber Alert that set off a nearly 12-hour chase and standoff ended Tuesday morning after Celis shot himself as police battered and swarmed the home. (The incident also prompted the Phoenix PD to post an ambiguously funny tweet trying to explain why it had driven a car into a Valley home -- read on.)
The Tolleson PD had sent out an Amber Alert after Celis allegedly kidnapped his wife and 3-year-old kid, checked them into a hotel near 83rd Avenue and McDowell Road and beat and assaulted his wife. The woman escaped and alerted police, who started a search for Celis and the 3-year-old.
Around 10 p.m. Monday, the Phoenix PD, the Tolleson PD, and the U.S. Marshal's Service responded to 9000 West Highland Avenue, where they believed Celis had holed up at a friend's house. Inside were eight other people, some of whom were Celis' kids.
Officers negotiated with Celis throughout the night and managed to sneak some of the victims out the window.
