Outside of Tempe's House of Tricks restaurant early Monday morning, police shot a man in the hand who allegedly hurled a wine bottle at an officer, the Tempe PD says.

Around 3:45 a.m., a Tempe PD sergeant arrived at the restaurant because a man -- whose name has not been released -- reportedly was throwing things, yelling, and breaking glass. When the officer approached the man, he start advanced on the officer and threw things at him.

"At least one wine bottle was thrown, striking the officer in the head," says Tempe PD spokeswoman Molly Enright.

After being hit in the head by the flying bottle, the officer shot the man in the hand.

Firefighters treated the man, who police say struggled and spat on emergency responders while being taken to the hospital.

Police haven't released much more information, but they say that a police dog cut its paw on some of the broken glass near the restaurant.

Not to worry, "The K9 officer was treated at the vet hospital and is expected to fully recover."

Ummmmmmmmmmmm, a guy is throwing things at the officer, one of them is a bottle, and He doesn't dodge it.....damn, even Mr. Bush could've done it.

It would be awesome if the guy went to chuck another wine bottle and the cop shot his hand in the process.  Thats what Steven Seagal would do.

Sounds like another classic cop over-reaction to me. Doesn't sound like he had to shoot the guy.

so... the officer gets hit in the head w/a thrown wine bottle...no word on anything there, but we're told "not to worry" because the k9 is fine?

Lessee...a dog's cut foot or a possible concussion to a human. Which am I more likely to worry about?

as much as i think a lot of cops over-react..............this cop is either a shitty shot or more in control of his anger than i am.

@Tyburn Gallows The real world doesn't have breakaway bottles like on TV.  If you throw a heavy bottle at somebody's head, you've really got to expect them to respond with deadly force.  Totally justified.

The next bottle could have killed the officer or knocked him unconscious, allowing the thrower access to his firearm.   In that situation, you neutralize the attacker in the quickest and most reliable means possible, by shooting at center of mass.

@loboco76. good question, it'll be a good one for the K9 handler.

@loboco76  A disturbing number of people proudly refer to themselves as "pet parents".  Once you've climbed aboard that marketing bandwagon, it's a short ride on the crazy trail over to "dogs are just like children".

@valleynative  You're honor, as Exhibit A I'd like to present to the Court this video of Amy from Amy's Baking Company discussing her cats and referring to them as her "children".
