CBS 5 "Investigation" Into Medical Marijuana Includes a Made-Up Statistic

"Just telling it like it is" with this made-up statistic.
CBS 5 -- the local news station that claims to be "telling it like it is" -- prominently displayed a made-up statistic during its recent anti-medical marijuana propaganda piece "investigation."

In the report, in which "investigative reporter" Morgan Loew told the state health department it was true that he had severe and chronic pain, but then claimed he didn't -- yet also claimed he didn't lie about it as he obtained a medical-marijuana card for the story -- Loew also falsely claimed that 90 percent of cardholders got certified just for "severe and chronic pain."

"Ninety percent of the certifications are for severe and chronic pain," Loew says, while the graphic above was displayed. "Not cancer, AIDS, glaucoma, ALS, or any of the other specific illnesses that qualify someone for medical marijuana."

That's false, according to the statistics from the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Just 71.57 percent of people in the state's medical-marijuana program cited chronic pain as their only debilitating condition.

A little less than 20 percent of cardholders have two conditions, which means they do have cancer, or AIDS, or glaucoma, ALS, Crohn's disease, severe muscle spasms, Hepatitis C, Alzheimer's, or any other debilitating disease -- and it's painful.

Then there's Morgan Loew, who, after consulting a chiropractor, went to a doctor, complaining about back pain he's had for months. The pain was "distracting," he said. He couldn't tell the doctor whether the pain made it difficult for him to concentrate on things but admitted that it limits his ability to run.

Reporter Morgan Loew, telling it like it isn't.
After getting the medical-marijuana card, which he asked about, he then acted like the doctor was nuts for giving him the green light on a medical-marijuana recommendation.

There were also other statistics that Loew used to claim that "young, healthy" people were getting medical marijuana.

"There are more 18- to 30-year-olds with medical marijuana cards than in any other age group," he says.

He didn't tell his viewers that the other age groups are 10-year ranges, not 13 years. Believe it or not, folks, there are more people out there between the ages of 18 and 30 than there are between 31 and 40.

The obfuscation grows when he claims that "nearly half" of cardholders are under 40. So, clearly more than half of cardholders are older than 40.

Heck, since more than half of Arizonans support legalization anyway, most people probably wouldn't care about Loew's belly-aching to begin with.

hmmm smoking an illegal drug and trying to bitch about it being legalized for mundane reasons....fuck off and burn in hell. youll bitch about lowering the legal alcohol limit but embrace the use of a smoked narcotic just so you can do it in public and drive around under the influence. if you can smoke weed and put my life in danger then i should be allowed to point a gun at you and pull the trigger to defend myself from your dangerous behavior. death penalty for any person who was caught under the influence of marijuana while operating a vehicle.

With CBS 5 (KPHO) they tell it like it is okay.... the way they see fit and only that way.  They are the most biased news outlet in Arizona next to ABC15.  For the real truth turn to Fox news.

Bravo to Mathew Hendley... For really telling like it is.. You know, THE TRUTH!I'm just sick to death of the yellow journalism the MSM keeps throwing at us!! Just making up "facts" as they see fit, to get their polluted point across!Thank you to all the "independent journalists" working tirelessly to be the true voice of the American People!

So what do they want? Those 90% of people to be on Morphine or Oxycontin???

It shouldn't matter what age you are or what your condition you have, You should have a choice of what you put into your body. This is our bodies, we live with the benefits and we reap the consequences, the choice should be ours if we are gonna be the ones dealing with it.

I think if Morgan Lowe had any balls he'd do an interview with New Times, but I won't hold my breath.

I watched the report, he lied to the doctor to get the MM card, then goes back to her telling her another lie, that he was not really in pain. He should be working at Wal-Mart now...

Matthew- Instead of just criticizing KPHO and presenting your own summary conclusion, it would have been helpful to provide the actual numbers.  Here are the actual stats:

Age           Number       Percent

Under 18        20                0%

18-30              7678          26%

31-40              6111          21%

41-50              5240          18%

51-60             6150           21%

61-70              3243          11%

71-80              452              2%

81+                   83               0%

There are the numbers - now draw your own conclusions instead of Morgan Lowe or Matthew Hendley drawing them for you or using them to prove their own political or philosophical points of view.

Isn't it against the law to falsify documents to get a MM card? Put the asshole in jail.

Not for nothing, but I was just looking for the actual statistics on the AZ DHS website and came across this on the director's blog, "By the way, the state computer system will be down for maintenance this Saturday 4/20 and there may be intermittent service, but things should be back on-line Sunday."  Irony at it's finest.

This whole story is nothing but a shame filled which false assumptions that morgan loew claims are true, but does not prove. The biggest assumption/association he makes is that because there are a large number of young people claiming chronic pain, the program is a shame. Sorry, but this does not prove anything other than young people find cannabis useful in sustaining a healthy  LIFE, and that cannabis gives them the LIBERTY to be healthy while in THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.

So if this lazy reporter had taken the time to actually do some research on this story, he may have discovered that this is also the age group that most likely works in heavy back braking labor related jobs. So why didn't this lazy reporter make the obvious connection between hard labor jobs that are being done by young people and their use of cannabis?

Rather than assembling a team of Doctors or Medical Researchers or any credible informed source to prove the points of the story, they instead, present us with a bureaucrat who at least tells everyone that he isn't qualified to answer the question that he then proceeds to give an opinion on anyway. The second source has no credibility on this issue at all. bill montgomery is a self serving politician who uses the law to further his own career.

What kpho, morgan loew,  bill montgomery and the tell it like is isn't crowed are actually advocating, though none of them will come out and say it like it is, is locking these young people up in cages, for their own protection I'm sure, and for a profit. Or feeding them to the drug rehab scam that is more about extorting money than creating a healthy creative citizen.

"If people let the goverrment decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies    will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls who live under tyranny."   Thomas Jefferson

The use of cannabis in any form and for any reason is a GOD given right that was taken away from Americans by mans greed and lust for power, it is those very human traits that keep it illegal too this day.

Isn't this the same tactics the New Times employs in its reporting? Sensationalism and fabrication. The same New Times that made up stories about Anna Nicole Smith's child and the Wrigley Mansion.

.. and the Reefer Madness propoganda continues

Referring to the bullshit made up info, which is all that Reefer Madness was, that the media and government is continuing to try and push down the uninformed throats of the populace. Info with NO basis in facts.

Shame on CBS5 - I see a letter to the editor of CBS5 and that POS Morgan Loew in my very near future - I recommend everyone else do the same.

@sydvishus812 Excuse me?  Matthew Hendley is an idiot. He only tells it the way he sees fit. Why he even has a job is beyond me. He should have been fired a long time ago.  I wonder where he'll apply to work when the New Times goes under?

@stickyfingahz So you think people should have the right to put drugs into their body without consequences?  I am sure you also think that people should also have the right to look at child pornography, don't you?

@skeptic123 I've never heard of the New Times engaging in perjury or fraud. That's Breitbart territory.

@teknik Perhaps it has. Counting 18-year-olds through 30-year-olds covers a span of 13 consecutive birth years. (30 - 18 = 12.) But you may have thought that paragraph was discussing the 18-30 group plus the 31-40 group, rather than comparing them, which it attempts to do.

@JoeArpaioFan @sydvishus812 I don't know what he does on other articles but on this one he hit the "nail on the head" directly.  What this guy did was WRONG!  The statistics that were used were MADE UP statistics.  There's a HUGE difference between 90% (KPHO Claim) and 70% (ACTUAL Statistic).  Especially considering that the "Severe/Chronic Pain" covers A LOT of conditions.  It was MEANT to be a "Catch-all" category so they didn't have to have a different category for intestinal problems that you've had all your life, but have recently become CHRONIC.  Whiplash that you've been stricken with or having 5 back surgeries. It's NOT a hang nail y'all, and KPHO knows it! You can't be as STUPID as they are? You can't MAKE a category to act as a catch all then get PISSED when people use it.  Bill Montgomery's not smart enough to pour PISS out of a Boot even if you put the INSTRUCTIONS on the Heel!  He's a MORON!

stickyfingahz
stickyfingahz

@JoeArpaioFan @stickyfingahz  ummmm....no. First of, What is a harmful drug? I would think a harmful drug is a drug that causes harm tothe body. Oxycontin is a harmful drug. So is Morphine. Marijuana? How many deaths are related to Marijuana? Try and do some research and compare Drugs like oxycontin, vicodin and even over the counter drugs like asprin and compare those to marijuana.

2nd of all, Ask yourself "Do you think YOU (not I) should be able to put drugs into YOUR (not my) body without consequences?" Do you think you should be able to choose to take asprin? Even though it's killed more people than marijuana? Do you think you should be able to take oxycontin? Freely without consequences? What drugs do you think should be legal? Drugs that kill or drugs that heal?
