Marijuana Legalization Supported by More Than Half of Arizonans, Poll Says

It shouldn't be illegal to possess a little marijuana, according to more than half of Arizona's residents.

This Behavior Research Center poll, released today, shows that 56 percent of the Arizonans surveyed are in favor of "legalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use," with majority support from both genders and all age groups.

The only lack of support for marijuana legalization -- aside from people grouped into the "other" races category -- comes from self-proclaimed Republicans and conservatives.

People saying they were Republican said no to legalization by a 41-56 margin, and people saying they were conservative said no by a 35-58 margin.

Just about everyone else supports legalization, according to the poll, including men (62 percent), women (50 percent), people under 35 (58 percent), between 35 and 53 (59 percent), 54 or older (51 percent), Democrats (61 percent), Independents (72 percent), Maricopa County (54 percent), Pima County (60 percent), rural counties (58 percent), liberals (75 percent), and moderates (67 percent).

The same poll also found some pretty positive feedback for same-sex marriage -- 55 percent are in favor, and 35 percent oppose it.

"It is perhaps ironic that as support for same-sex marriage and defelonization of marijuana have long been albatrosses which conservative candidates could hang around the necks of some of their moderate or liberal challengers," the pollsters say in the release. "[I]t now appears that hard opposition to gay marriage and perhaps even to marijuana liberalization could become issues moderates and liberals can use against their conservative opponents."

Marijuana is the safest drug with actual benefits for the user as opposed to alcohol which is dangerous, causes addiction, birth defects, and affects literally every organ in the body.  Groups are organizing all over the country to speak their minds on reforming pot laws.  I drew up a very cool poster featuring Uncle Willie Nelson and The Teapot Party for the cause which you can check out on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/01/vote-teapot-2011.html  Drop in and let me know what you think!

I think we had 3 border patrol agents get caught smuggling weed in 2012. Meth, Heroin, Cocaine are the problem causers. peace

The drug war is a failed joke, especially where MJ is concerned. We incarcerate people for non-violent crime, with a substance that is safer than alcohol, tobacco and 90% of the OTC drugs available, at a higher rate than any other country on the planet.

We send people who are non-violent and non-criminal to jail for longer periods than we do rapists and murderers, only to have them come out of the broken jail/legal system more dangerous than when they went in.

All for money in the pockets of Law Enforcement and the Private prison industry and to keep a minority of the populace who are against this happy with their hypocrisy, the same people who have no problem getting drunk or abusing OTC drugs and then abuse their families and/or beat their wives/kids.

The Drug War has done nothing to stop the drugs, which are stronger and easier to get now than when this failed experiment started. All the Drug War has done is make criminals out of people who are not criminals, either through the persecution or the entry into the private prison jokes we have where they become real criminals just to be able to survive.

Conservatives hate having anyone tell them what to do so when are they going to realize that they are the hypocrites here, trying to tell people that they have to live the way conservatives think someone should live.

Unless it directly affects you, no one has any right to tell another what to do or how to live their lives. Where is the vaulted conservative belief in self determination and the right to live your own life that conservatives scream about all the time???

Oh that's right, that only exists for conservatives, the biggest hypocrites in the universe.

End this drug war now and start focusing on things that actually make a difference, education and treatment for the true addictions, of which MJ is not a part of.
