Kelly Wasko, one of several Valley women recently arrested for a cancer-faking scheme, will be spending some time in prison.

Wasko, a 41-year-old Gilbert resident, was sentenced this morning to 18 months in prison for collecting donations through Facebook to treat her fake cancer.

According to the Gilbert PD, Wasko made about $12,000 after duping family and friends, who created a Facebook account for Wasko to take in donations for her imaginary bone-marrow transplant.

According to police, Wasko told family and friends that she "desperately needed" the transplant, which her insurance wouldn't cover.

She made $12,000 via donations after the Facebook page was created, including $1,000 from her own adult daughter and $350 from a person who actually had cancer.

Wasko also conned another person out of $8,000, the Gilbert PD said, as part of a scheme in which Wasko claimed her adult daughter had died.

Other scams reportedly included saying she was pregnant, saying her children being kidnapped, saying she'd been evicted, and saying she had a kidney infection.

Wasko was arrested on 11 charges in December, after the Gilbert PD found more scams Wasko was running.

She pleaded guilty last month to charges of theft, attempted theft, and fraudulent schemes.

The theft charge is what earned her an 18-month prison sentence. For attempted theft, she earned herself three years of probation, and for the fraudulent schemes conviction, she was sentenced to seven years of probation.

its funny how this article is posted right above the article about Tim Abrahmson and Carpenter. if Abrahamson and Carpenter were facing charges here in Az (mainly here in Maricopa county) i would be willing to bet they would receive less time than Kelly Wasko
