Should Arizona Adopt Bisbee's Pending Civil-Union Ordinance for Same-Sex Couples?

Categories: Morning Poll

As the Bisbee City Council prepares to adopt an ordinance tonight that would give same-sex couples the right to a civil union that provides the same legal benefits as a marriage, we can't help but wonder why the rest of the state isn't doing this.

After it passes as expected, the city will acknowledge same-sex spouses in matters like "property ownership, guardianship in cases of illness, and disposition of remains upon death," as the city's attorney, John MacKinnon, told the Associated Press. The union will be recognized only within Bisbee, a southern Arizona town of about 5,600 people.

The pending city law can be used as an experiment: If, by next month, fire and brimstone hasn't rained down upon Arizona, blotting it from the earth like the Old Testament deity did to Sodom and Gomorrah, then Arizona should adopt such an ordinance state-wide.

But maybe you're one of those people who think that a negative effect from such a law would be less dramatic, but present nonetheless. You're worried about the potential cost to the state's treasury, or maybe even what Jesus would think.

Either way, with Bisbee pioneering the course on this issue for the rest of the state, you may get the chance in the near future to decide whether Arizona should have same-sex civil unions or marriage.

Don't worry about the Defense of Marriage Act, whatever the Supreme Court decides. Arizona's voters and lawmakers do things their own way, as SB1070 and the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act show.

Here is our morning poll:

Best solution? Make civil unions available to everyone. Marriage should be a function of the church that offers the same legal benefit as the governmental civil union instead of the other way around.

Allowing gay people human rights of legal marriage is better for everyone, especially and including any children involved.  Best scenario yet is that everyone has access to quality healthcare and government stays out of ALL marriage.  Marriage is between 2 people and possibly their God.  Please tell me why government needs to have anything to do with it.

"Separate but equal" has a poor track record in the real world.

we need to step out of our closets and just overturn the AZ laws and other conservative laws that inhibit HUMAN RIGHTS

LMAO and soon the Legislature will come up with yet another strike everything amendment and pass a law that counters this one..i laugh because its typical that they focus more on social issues, and ignore the economic ones...

@davelog I'm atheist and married.  The church had and will have absolutely no role in my marriage.  But it absolutely is a "marriage".  Some people think of a wedding as a function of the church that requires licensing by the State.   The reality is that the license from the State is all that matters.

@davelog yes & no. I prefer same designation and rights for everybody.  Example, I may not be an adherent to state sponsored religion but I also may not wish to expose my political views on that issue to just anybody.  So either civil union for everybody or marriage for everybody.

@david_saint01   True, but to be fair, there really isn't much they can do about the economy except offer incentives to employers, and when they do that, people denounce it as corporate welfare.   Beyond that, too many of the voters are retired and don't care about job creation (or education).

@sarum @davelog If marriage didn't carry a religious connotation, I'd be perfectly happy with it being the defacto legal state of pair bonding. The church isn't willing to keep their moral authority out of it though. So, let everyone get a union, and let the churches pick and choose all they want. No barriers that way, and everyone's happy.
