Joe Arpaio's Biggest Danger: Mail Bombs or Sidewalks?

Categories: Morning Poll

Sheriff Joe Arpaio, after encountering a sidewalk.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio's name was on a package with what may have been an explosive device inside, triggering a five-alarm press conference headed up by the elderly sheriff.

"I'm a victim," Arpaio said, apparently trying to convince everyone that he's not crying wolf about a death threat this time.

The box in question was dropped in a package drop-off in Flagstaff, and there were quite a few indications that it was suspicious. When the postal inspector got involved and found that the box had explosive powder and what appeared to be wires and a battery.

Of course, Arpaio and chief deputy Jerry Sheridan tried to blame drug cartels, without providing any evidence, and tried to explain how much danger Arpaio was in, despite the package never getting within an hour's drive of him, and the fact that a law-enforcement source told us last week that investigators weren't even sure that the thing would have blown up.

That said, we do know how to hurt Arpaio, and keep him out for weeks -- build a sidewalk.

Remember, an alleged trip and fall on a sidewalk was all it needed to keep Arpaio out of his office for weeks. Heck, he's still recovering and wearing medical devices.

So, what do you think is Arpaio's biggest danger: mail bombs or sidewalks?

I would have guessed Senile Joe is more afraid of spiders than anything. Look how he reacted when one turned up on his front lawn.

Well, any one of us can trip and fall on a sidewalk.  But very few of us have to worry about whats showing up in the mail.     It almost seems like a lot of you liberals are making fun of Sheirff Joe getting hurt from the fall....and you also seem to like that someone tried to kill him.  Wow!  You kind of people are really sick!

It would seem that the biggest danger to Arpaio is his own arrogance and hubris.

Actually the biggest danger Joe faced was that drunk, gay hairdresser who kicked the ample asses of both Arpaio and the MCSO blimp, Davey Hendershot.

I am NOT an Arpaio fan; quite the opposite, but until we know more, this is a rather snarky comment that smacks more of childish "ha ha ha" than anything else.  I've seen this paper take on something like a dog with a bone, and they can be hurtful of people without ever contacting them....so I've lost confidence in wheat they have to say.

Hey, Joe is getting better at these "letter bombs".  Remember the last one, it (he) was addressed to the President.  At least this time he got the address right.

Just more of the same hey look at me "events" to call in the media.  So sad.

He should be afraid of the afterlife. He is, for sure, going to hell.

The few - very few - actual mail bombings that have occurred in the Valley have receive far less press coverage than this.  They are a headline for a day then gone.  For 3 days this story was billed as 'top news' here (at least for AZCentral).  All it shows is that Arpaio's PR team (which we pay handsomely for) knows who's strings to pull.

I believe that the security detail was necessitated when they figured out that he should not be driving any longer.  The first assassination threat was necessary to demonstrate and justify the security detail.  it seems to me that this caused an outpouring of Poor Joe publicity and from then on it has fed on itself.    The threats seem to come when OSB has been roughed up (politically that is, not by a cartel-funded hit-sidewalk taking a shot at him).

Ever notice how the discussions about his security detail tend to mimic that which is publicly known about the Secret Service?  After all, OSB is pretty tight with the Secret Service having teamed up with Andrew Thomas to issue a letter warning them that one Donald Stapley was traveling to Washington D.C. while under indictment for more than one hundred counts, many of which were felonies.  It was sad that OSB and Thomas were never properly rewarded for their heroic acts.  As we know, Mr. Stapley went to D.C. and the President was not harmed.  Do you think we would have had that outcome without the letter being sent by Messrs Arpaio and Thomas?  Sorry, I digressed.

As I recall, there was, and there may still be, an active assassination contract against OSB issued by one or more Mexican drug cartels.  This contract was offered on the open market by means of a text message and was valued at $5M.  By comparison, Babeu needed a helicopter because he had been marked for assassination by a cartel and there was an active $1M contract on his head.  The source of this one was not disclosed.  Not sure what the difference in price was about, but neither contract seemed to gain traction.  I have to believe that OSB is considered by the cartels to be an asset.  A Nickel-bag law enforcement approach touches people locally.  To make a dent in cartel activity in Maricopa County would require substantial patience and persistence.  This approach is not feasible because it would yield a single major press release per year.  Nickel bag stuff can easily net one or two a week.

If a cartel wanted to spend $5M to assassinate OSB, do you think they would employ the tactics seen in this scary box case?  Someone with that sort of motivation and backing would not employ this approach.

What was done with this box was apparently very illegal, very dangerous, very stupid, and very incompetent.  So much so that I wonder if this were not staged by someone hoping that the publicity and sympathy would help OSB with respect to the recall.

I wish Arpaio no harm whatsoever as he continues on his path to irrelevance.  Just be careful of those sidewalks Joe.  Your true lack of Shurffing effectiveness will keep you safe from the cartels.

dont forget, when you think about the threats that Joe gets, the bombs he gets in the mail (whether or not they were real) and the uneven sidewalks. these are not reasons for Joe to be upset. in his own words "sometimes thats the cost of doing business" so he shouldnt be upset, nor should he feel victimized. if those words were enough (in his eyes) to get the Atencios, Braillards, Norbergs and many countless others who lost loved ones, people who were victims who never got justice and people who had to pay for those mistakes through their grief...... it should be enough for Joe too. Joe should not be crying to the nation on a televised press conference "I'm a victim". he should be saying it is just the cost of doing business then shut his mouth and go back to work not stopping crime (except for identity theft.....and not really making a dent in that either)

if you mean the biggest danger to Joe.....its a sidewalk, they have been proven to be the existing danger and they have been proven to be the thing that goes undetected through his extensive security screen of security (same as boulders in parking lots). the mail bomb however still is shrouded in doubt.  if you mean the question as "what is Joe Arpaio's biggest danger" as in  to US the taxpayers or citizens.....well then you forget to  mention his ineffectiveness as a leader or ability to remember day to day things that he has happening under his command. because those are things that have tallied up into quite an extensive amount of settlements , lawsuits, deaths, violations of civil rights, disrespect of law enforcement, and made this county a laughing stock to the rest of the civilized world. (there are also around 400 some odd sexual assault victims who never got their justice who would also say his inability to prioritize crime would be his biggest danger that he poses)

I'm sure of it, the sidewalk tried to kill him. Too bad it didn't succeed.

While I agree we need more information no matter what, the attitude you are picking up towards Arpaio is based on factual history, of which there is PLENTY.

This is a boy cried wolf scenario - maybe if Joe had not cried wolf so many times in the past, when there was no wolf, people and this paper would be more apt to believe him now.

Then of course there is the fact that Joe is responsible for the editors of this paper being illegally arrested and charged in a midnight raid, all for printing publicly available information that Joe didn't do a good enough job of hiding.

Joe brought this on himself, just like the wolf boy did and he has no one to blame for this but himself.

oh don't insult your 6 yr old, I am sure they can do a much better site than anything Jaffy has put up

I'm sure they could also take it when people respond to them on their site, unlike Jaffy, who since he could not handle that even on his own site people were disagreeing with him, so he took away that ability, like a 2yr old
