Marines vs. TSA at Sky Harbor: Whose Story Are You Buyin'?

This week's everyone-hates-the-TSA story comes from Phoenix's own Sky Harbor airport, where a group of Marines claim TSA agents humiliated one of a fellow Marine.

According to multiple press accounts, one Marine claims that a 22-year-old Marine who lost his legs due to injuries sustained in Afghanistan was supposedly told by TSA agents to remove his prosthetic legs before being told to put them on again and walk through a body scanner.

According to what one of the man's friends told 3TV, he "just had his legs blown off," so he can't really walk.

According to ABC News, "TSA spokesman David Castelveter said the tapes of the incident have been reviewed and at no point did the Marine ever remove his prosthetic legs. He also said the eight-minute video showed nothing out of the ordinary and said the screeners who performed the screening are military veterans, including one who was a Marine."

A TSA employee also told 3TV that there was "no footage is available showing the area in which the Marine claims to have taken his prosthetic legs off," but all the employees say it didn't happen.

So, if you had to venture a guess, who's story are you buying?

Bob here from the TSA Blog. I published a blog post about the Marine Wounded Warrior. After reviewing TSA video (CCTV), interviewing and receiving written statements from all Officers involved, we found that the soldier was not asked and did not remove his prosthetic legs. The screening was done by the book and lasted a total of 8 minutes from beginning to end. Take a look at our blog post for more information.

Being a TSA officer is a thankless job. But in this case I believe the Marine. I watched a 12News interview of their head supervisor. His answers didn't seem credible to me. I don't know why the grunt would have lied about this. TSA is always doing these things that make no sense whatsoever, like having a 92-year old reveal her Depends. Solution: Whenever a situation like this arises, the TSA officers will consult with the senior supervisor on duty to figure out what to do without ruffling any feathers. Every step in the process will be documented. Still photos, video, etc. Oh, and did I mention using a little common sense?

You know, as much fun as it is to bash the TSA, this story was NOT reported by the Marines involved but by someone who was traveling with them...and THEN described in a letter from their Congressman (a Republican, by the way). Assuming that whatever happened was in a private screening area, the best we've got here is a third-hand story where none of these folks actually saw what happened. It's also been reported that both TSA screeners involved were veterans, one a Marine.

You'd think being a Marine would be humiliating enough...

The video shows a completely different story.I have to side with the TSA on this one.

The TSA is the biggest joke in the government, ok maybe second to the IRS! Abolish the TSA.

What incentive do the travelers have to make up this story or lie.  The TSA has every incentive to lie in order to try to make themselves not look bad.....again.   But I can't fathom what incentive the Marines who were travelling have to create a fictional story about the TSA.

I don't trust the TSA for nothing...how about they release the tapes and let the public decide if there was a violation or not.  What a crock!

@dahgrostabphri Even that wouldn't be conclusive because "A TSA employee also told 3TV that there was "no footage is available showing the area in which the Marine claims to have taken his prosthetic legs off,"

Which is a totally different issue - how is it that there are blind spots in the security screen?  Does that mean that someone with bad intent can sneak through a part of the security screening area without being seen on video?  Lousy security screen the TSA has created there if that is the case.
