Don't Tread On Me, I'm DON SHOOTER!: Senator Allegedly Assaults Teacher

Don-Shooter.jpg
wepartypatriots.com

One Arizona school may need to hire guards to protect itself -- not from gang violence or fear of school shootings, but from Yuma Republican State Senator and advocate of guns in schools, Don Shooter.

Yuma PD says that Shooter burst into a charter school for troubled teens that his grandson attends, where he yelled at and intimidated a teacher. A police report notes that the teacher, Danielle Munoz, would like to press charges. Shooter could be charged with assault, trespassing and interference or disruption of an educational institution.

An armed guard might have come in handy, because when Shooter walked into the school, the police report says he asked the registrar to speak with Munoz, to which the registrar said he'd have to make an appointment. The Senator then repeated that he was DON SHOOTER, and he must speak with the teacher. When a phone call distracted the registrar, the report says, Shooter snuck around her and headed for the classroom.

Shooter barged into the room and stood at arms length from Munoz, who is listed as a special education teacher at the school. Shooter waved his finger in her face and, the report notes, he said, "Are you the teacher of this classroom?" to which Munoz replied she was.

"My name is Donald Shooter, I am [here] to... " Munoz cut him off by offering her hand and introducing herself, and then Shooter continued. "You have my grandson in your class, and let me tell you... "

The arguing carried on and as another person stood between the two, Munoz backed up and began recording the confrontation on her phone. When Shooter noticed he was being recorded he walked out, according to the report.

(The video was submitted as evidence, but Yuma PD Sergeant Leanne Worthen says because the investigation is still open, she's not sure when it will be available. And, on a side note, Yuma PD doesn't send files electronically and won't even fax its police reports, so if New Times did want the video it might be a long while before it gets to us.)

Munoz told the officer later that she felt threatened and feared for her own safety and the safety of her student, and would like to press charges.

If bursting into a class and yelling at a teacher while repeating, I'm Don Shooter, wasn't enough, he then made sure to let Patricia Romant, operations director of the Yuma Private Industry Council, which is affiliated with the school, know that he is a "State Senator and very influential man in Yuma and in the State," the report says. Shooter then called Eileen Sigmund, president of the Arizona Charter Schools Association, to complain.

Sigmund says Shooter did indeed call her afterward and explained that Munoz had belittled his grandson and he wanted something done about it.

"Whenever I get any family calling we do the same thing," Sigmund says. "There is no special treatment because he's a senator."

Sigmund says the charter school is handling the matter and plans to set a meeting between Shooter, his daughter, grandson, and Munoz.

Finally, if there was such a thing as karma-irony, the Arizona senate recently passed SB 1325, which would allow some teachers to carry guns. Although there are some caveats to the bill, maybe Shooter will think twice about arming teachers if he plans on continuing to burst into schools unannounced -- or maybe he'll think twice about wagging his finger in the face of someone who is potentially armed.

Shooter sounds like a loose cannon. Very unstable. How did this lunatic come into power?

toon 45 - I agree that the senator did not handle it appropriately. I think I saw somewhere that he apologized - which he absolutely should have. That said, however, something clearly provoked him. I am sure the teacher will be on her best behavior for the rest of the year, but it would be interesting to talk to former students - who could speak freely - to hear if there is a known issue. I have heard that there are studies that showed when anonymous surveys were given to teachers and they were asked whether or not they knew of or worked with a teacher who bullied children - frequently the answer is yes. The reaction by the senator was inappropriate - he should have had his grandson write out the problem then submit or even record the teacher. The way the senator handled it - he shifted the discussion to his behavior. He lost his temper. I just hope something good comes out of it.  Seems like the school could send him a letter saying he is not welcome on campus - if they were really afraid. But given that they waited all day before contacting the police, I think they are less afraid and more indignant.

This is intolerable.

I was principal of a PUBLIC Alternative School for ten years and can say with all confidence that this never would have happened there. He would not have gotten past the office, unless, like Lanza, he started shooting people. Charter schools, on the other hand, are different and do NOT have to meet the same standards as public schools, especially with regard to security. I also served on a committee that evaluated charter schools and we found that lack of security was one of their biggest failings (...another big shortcoming we found was understaffing by unqualified, untrained and poorly paid people, which could well explain why he so easily got past the secretary/receptionist/whatever).

Regardless of the status of the individual, this behavior would not be permitted. Parent/guardian complaints are common and there is a correct procedure for instituting and following through on one that does not involve confrontation, intimidation or threats. In this case, due to Shooter's behavior, the police would have been notified and a report entered. On numerous occasions I have filed charges of disorderly conduct, disruption of a public classroom, or trespassing against people who did less than Shooter. In most of those cases, fines were levied. That is exactly how the school and the teacher should pursue this.

When introducing himself, he should just use his initial: "I'm D. Shooter, and..."

This never would have happened if Shooter's demon seed hadn't created a retard in the first place.

If the munoz method of special education includes belittling children, her superiors need to investigate her behavior and determine if disciplinary action and/or revocation of her teaching credentials is warranted. The last thing that special education children need is mistreatment by a teacher.

Oh please!  Let's talk the truth here!  If that woman hadn't bellited Shooter's special needs grandson none of this would have taken place.  The teacher got what she asked for.   Maybe the next time she will think twice before her special needs children that way.  Mr. Shooter is a hero for standing up for his grandson.  That is something most people are just simply afraid to do.  Hey Danielle Munoz, the days where the teacher is always right and nobody dares question them is long gone....long gone!    But of course, as the Phoenixnewtimes reported, this all on the teachers part and Mr. Shooters, all "allegedly" happened!   We shall see....we shall see.

Those who truly ARE influential don't have to run around telling folks how influential they are. Seems like Mr. Shooter is a dunderhead.

The process for handling displeasure is to set an appointment and meet with the teacher and her supervisor in a controlled environment to learn about what might be truthful with regard to the teacher and student.

A state senator should know about that process.

It might be that the grandson is a reflection of Mr. Shooter, thus his need to be in a charter school for "troubled youth".

Mr. Shooter has a lot of explaining and apologizing to do. But, I don't think we should hold our collective breaths waiting for that to happen.

If Shooter came into my classroom like that, I wouldn't need a gun to handle him. A gun would make things too fast and easy. He should be more worried about the extreme ass kicking he'd get. For all I know he would be armed. I would definitely need to dispatch him with extreme prejudice.

Odd that the school waited six+ hours before contacting the police if they were so scared. We have only heard what was put in the police report by the accusers. I am certain they left a few details out and maybe included a few others.  As I said earlier, he did himself no favors but in the end, if this scrutiny exposes an abusive teacher and a disinterested school bureaucracy - then I am glad he did it. I can't wait until we hear what provoked him.

@LuluandRosy i dont give two shits what the teacher did...as a state Senator, he has a duty to act like one at all times as he represents our state..he didnt. Charge his ass i say. NO exceptions! If he had a bone to pick, he had several other options available, some of which he apparently only thought to do after he acted like a total ass.

@LuluandRosy that doesn't mean that he had the right to feel provoked by whatever action angered him.

also, a very high degree of pre-meditation is involved when both storming the school and then following up with a barrage of calls.

fighting fire with fire will only get you burned.

@LuluandRosy IF the teacher did anything wrong, two points you must consider.

1) Does Shooter have custody of the grand kid?  Is he the guardian?   If not, he shouldn't have been in the school at all.

2) IF the teacher did something wrong (in Shooter's eyes), why did he NOT make a formal complaint, instead of barging through security to confront the teacher?

@tcon45 Crazy behavior like this is similar to erratic behavior seen by the Sandy Hook shooter. The Senator just shot his mouth off instead. Very erratic, crazy, self-entitled behavior that shows a misuse of power. Please tell me why this guy is in such a high position considering his anger management issues?

@david_saint01 I agree, except that the appropriate response to a Senator failing to act as a Senator should is not to "charge him", but to bring him up for discipline by the Senate.

It's really not illegal to be an overbearing blowhard.  It's hard to even recall somebody for being one.

valleynative
valleynative topcommenter

@WhoKnows Again you don't need to be the guardian to talk to the school.  They'll probably ignore you if you don't have any legal standing, but it's certainly not illegal to go talk to them, and they'll probably even listen if you seem to have some standing.

@Thinkofthechildren @childrensadvocate lol wow, you two sure do jump to a very large conclusion absent facts. How do you know his grand kid wasnt acting like a brat and just got called out for it? Being that he acted the way he did, wouldnt surprise me had that been the case. But i digress.
Thinkof, lol um pretty sure thats the GOP that doesnt give two shits about kids..with the hundreds of millions of dollars in education cuts, and to Kids Care, while their private prison buddies are raking in 50-100 mil a year for nothing..but dont let the facts get in the way of your bs

@MaskedMagician1967 Even if the teacher did smack the kid, she should be brought up on charges. There is a policy to follow in regards to her behavior as well. Having Shooter burst into a school to use his power to bully the teacher around is grounds for dismissal. He has anger management issues.

@TeaPublican @LuluandRosy lol dont give a shit what she did..he had other methods of handling it, and he chose poorly. His actions were criminal, and there are NO exceptions just because your a member of the Leg. Arent you a pro joe, "uphold the laws" type? So, does that change because hes a GOP member? NO!!! Excusing behavior by asserting mass speculation isnt just bullshit of the first order, but its tantamount to approving what he did..bet had that been a Dem you idiots would be calling for ol joe to go and arrest him!

@sggrange many things would justify that type of treatment. I've heard of things that teachers have done that would justify far more than a finger wave. I hope that they conduct a thorough investigation into this munoz's actions.

tcon45

@valleynative  Wrong! There was an ALLEGATION she "belittled" a special needs student, and no information was provided about the origins of that assertion. For you to bring the term "lousy teacher" into the conversation based on that puts you in the same category as Shooter ... Arrogant Douchenozzle.

@valleynative @MaskedMagician1967

1) TeaPublican brought up the possibility of an abusive teacher. I didn't.

2) If Shooter had reason to believe there was abuse at the very least the teacher involved would be put on admin leave and an investigation launched. If the allegations were sustained then the teacher involved would be fired.
