Tent City Inmate Tells New Times Joe Arpaio's Heating Plans Are "Total Bulls**t"

Tent City.
Well, it's said that there are two sides to every story, so here's the other side to Sheriff Joe Arpaio's claim that the Sheriff's Office is taking steps to keep the inmates warm in Tent City.

Less than half an hour after we posted our blog, passing along the message from the Sheriff's Office, an inmate phoned up New Times to tell us that it's "total bullshit."

-Joe Arpaio Now Has a Plan for Keeping Tent City Inmates Warm

The inmate, who just wanted to go by "John," is on work-release, so he gave us a call before he's due back to the jail tonight.

He claimed that the people in the work-release section are getting two blankets, and no access to the day room, which contradicts the claims from the Sheriff's Office.

Arpaio's press release said he "would like families and friends of inmates incarcerated in Tent City to know that their loved ones will be fine, despite the low temperatures.

Inmates have access to an unlimited amount of blankets, 24-hour access to the heated day room, and hot chicken broth is being added to the evening meal for an "added touch," the press release said.

"We get basically nothing," John tells us.

He says they do have access to a laundry room, and guys will toss a quarter into the dryer, and huddle around it an an attempt to keep warm -- which kind of works.

John says it's been cold in there for a few weeks now, and said he wouldn't be surprised if 60-year-old Arthur Madril -- the Tent City inmate who died in the work-release section of the jail last weekend -- died from hypothermia. There's been no word on an official cause of death, but the Sheriff's Office reportedly said it looked like he died from cardiac arrest, brought on by "natural causes." John says he had seen Madril that weekend, and wasn't sleeping too far from him.

"He wasn't complaining about [the cold], but the guy's 62 years old," John tells us.

John told us he'll call us back when he's out, to see if anything changes. He doubts it.

"It's a nightmare in there," he says.

Still no heaters, never has been a day room. Inmates cannot wear gloves or hats. This is cruel and unusual punishment!

I did time in that CONCENTRATION CAMP,(tent city); the conditions in that place are unhumane, right out of a concentration camp.In summer the temperatures reaches 135 degrees inside the tents and if the DO's put the yards in lockdown, forget it , if immates don't have a bottle with water, you can imagine. Even the use of restrooms is restricted to a certain point untill the lockdown is over. On winter time is harder,'cause with the excuse of looking for contraband, sometimes the DO's would call the goon squad to "shake" the tents of certain yard, or the DO's themselves would do it, thing is they do it sometimes at night, so they wake up all the immates in that tent and call out one at a time, put him against the chain link fence, frisk him and onto the next one untill they line them all up against the chain link fence. then they begin searching the bunks, throwing out the extra blankets, extra clothing, extra food, leaving only one blanket per immate and the set of clothing that they are wearing, meanwhile the immates are standing out there in the cold, and sometimes they take a long time to search, that's how Arpayaso keeps warm the immates.

@JoeArpaioFan , hey Just a fuck, alot of sheriffs drive drunk. One died doing it. We all know his name. My brother Paul has always driven drunk. In MA he was driving drunk up RT 2 on the Mohawk Trail, and his was drunk, feel asleep and rolled of his Jeep and went into a ditch, he called his friends for help. Plus, he had family arrest records erased like Shaun his brother, the Judge in AZ, here in North Adam, . So, it all depends who you know. Veronica, Paul sister has gets let off by Paul's deputies with over 5 traffic violations .before tha, shet had lost her license due to so many violations and had to go to traffic shcool. Paul sister's always drive drunk out there and do pills and smoke pot, who cares, not the Sheriff. These are all crimes, why are they not in the tent. Some happened in Arpario county. What the hell is going on? So don't give me this criminal shit. These people in the tent are human beings. They just don't know assholes like Sheriff's Joe and Paul who are the ones committing the fucking crimes. Go suck Paul and Joe dick. you lover of them. Lucy Babeu

Truth is, those who want all the comforts of home deserve whatever is dished out to them because if they had not broken the law they could be home where the temperature is nice and toasty.

Most people are in there for dui's. Yeah it was a bad mistake, but they aren't hard criminals who deserve to die...

I spent two weeks there after being railroaded in a joke of a case. The justice system is not infallible. Quite on the contrary it is so corrupt that using the word justice to describe anything having to do with this system is a lie at best.

Even if 'compassion' is the new 'c' word for you, think about possible lawsuits. Do you want to pay for yet another settlement?

Tyburn Gallows

People seem to have a lot of faith in the "justice" system. I always find this amusing because most of the real law and order nutjobs are otherwise very distrusting of government. But when it comes to dealing with brown, black and poor people, they all of a sudden have all the faith in the world!

Don't think the death penalty is an appropriate sentence for the 62 year old man that died last week... He didn't commit murder, did he? This is America, people, where we are supposed to have BASIC human rights, like food, water, BLANKETS, even in jail. ANY one of you could land in tent city simply for speeding, do you expect to freeze to death?

JAFFY, JAFFY, You haven't learned. Thruth is that sometimes the officers(MCSO?) would make up charges when individuals had not broken any law, just to keep those jails full to keep the money coming in.

@JoeArpaioFan kind of hard to "uphold the law" when one violates the laws within the Constitution now isnt it moron...

justme

You drive drunk you violated criminal statute, ergo, you are a criminal. We can play semantics all day but the bottom line is simple; don't want to be cold? Don't break the law.

robert_graham

@Karen Garcia Oh so DUI is not a crime?  And whoever said they are going to die? They should have thought about the consequences before they broke the law.

robert_graham

@Deanna North What's a disgrace to the country?  They are no more colder than all the homeless people on the streets so what's your problem? Those people broke the law and now they are paying the price. Nothing wrong with that.

robert_graham

@Justice McDonnell Railroaded, I don't think so!  Seems that everybody says the same thing that they are not guilty but truth is you broke the law and you went to jail. Nothing corrupt about that. If you did not like Tent City (and I'm glad you did not) you should have thought about it before you broke the law IDIOT!!!!!!!

The guy who died in work release wasn't a criminal. What say you now? He was in jail on a civil child support case. Not a crime. Did he deserve to die?

@JoeArpaioFan  but aacording to  a comment you made earlier to a guy who said he was innocent and railroaded, you said they all say that, so that would mean nobody innocent goes to jail. so if nobody innocent goes to jail, explain Mandela and Ghandi and many many other cases where people have been proven innocent through DNA testing and released after spending years in prison?
