-Jennifer Campos: Giving 2-Year-Old Methadone For Toothache a "Bad Idea." Ya Think?
The boy was unresponsive and not breathing when he was brought to a Phoenix hospital on October 23, 2011, and doctors discovered the boy had overdosed on methadone -- a drug most commonly used to treat heroin addicts.
In addition, traces of amphetamine, nicotine, and acetone were found in the boy's blood, according to court documents previously obtained by New Times.
Police discovered that Campos, then 35, as well as the boy's father, Anthony Casillas, and another woman, Misty Murphy, had given the boy a mixture of purple Kool-Aid and methadone to treat a toothache.
That toothache was due to "bottle rot," and the boy's gums were also bleeding.
Detectives found out that Campos had called Casillas, and asked him to pick up some Orajel to treat the boy's toothache, but Casillas suggested methadone.
Murphy allegedly provided Casillas with the methadone, and Casillas gave it to Campos -- who mixed it with the Kool-Aid and gave it to her son.
The boy stopped breathing later that morning.
Instead of calling 9-1-1, Campos called her mother for help, because she didn't want Child Protective Services taking away the boy, or her two other children, according to the documents. Her mother convinced her to call 9-1-1.
Campos ended up telling police that they were living at a Motel 6 so CPS couldn't find her -- related to a different incident -- and also admitted to smoking meth with Casillas in the motel room, according to the documents.
Campos admitted that giving her baby methadone was probably a "bad idea," but Casillas had a different opinion for police.
According to court documents, Casillas "belligerently" said "you fucking snitch ain't going to bring back [the baby]. That's what I'm saying -- you being a snitch is not going to bring [the baby] back."
According to court records, charges are still pending against Casillas and Murphy.
