Jan Brewer's Trip to Afghanistan: A Good Reason for Week-Long Disappearance?

As was rumored, Governor Jan Brewer was indeed on a trip to Afghanistan during her unnancounced absence from the state.

We haven't been able to discern an actual purpose of this trip, although the going explanation from Brewer's office seems to be "to visit with Arizona National Guard service members."

The Department of Defense apparently set this up for the governor, and as you can see from this interview with the Arizona Republic, it didn't quite seem like a business trip.

Either way, does this seem like a good reason for the governor to pack up and leave the state (without explanation) for a week?

I would ask; who has any proof that she really went to afghanistan?

That picture looks like it was taken around any railroad yard. If She really went to Afghanistan why keep

it secret, is not that she is an important person to be in danger if her whereabouts are known.

What a disaster .she looks like she needs to get get back to business................with her gin and juice.....What about the war zone in Arizona ? Seems like she should take care of maricopistan first . There are so many Vets HERE in Arizona that need tending to. Apreciate the troops and what they are doing ....wonderfull............. charity starts at home .

As a Marine Corps vet, she has no business in a war zone...let alone the huge waste of tax payer funds. We need to remember anyone in the service today is there because they want to be. peace

Yes.  It was good when Napolitano did it in 2007 and it is good now.  The State of Arizona and the United States asks our troops to make a huge sacrifice when we deploy them and it is important for our State's senior executive to personally express our collective appreciation to them on our behalf.   While there are many things about her to dislike, include her inability to "done did" put two sentences together, this is not one of them.

She went to recruit militia members to her Brewers Bunnies Brigade so she can take over Arizona's government after her term is over.

Matt,  some news sources are saying it was on an offer that was extended a long time ago, and she just now took them up on it. if that is the case, someone should look into why she chose now instead of when the offer was first extended. what is the "pickled pig" trying to avoid by leaving now when there are things she should be attending to? if this is truly a offer that was extended some time ago, what would be her motivation behind the time she chose to do this? would it have anything to do with improving her image now that she is considering contesting our state constitution to run for another term? could it be to distance herself from the controversial election they are reviewing?

@Thane.Eichenauer  No for two reasons in this particular case.  while I totally agree with that sentiment. the problem here is in that Jan Brewer Detracts from the cause and  because of her negative reputation nationwide. and the disrespect she has shown  to their Commander in Chief.  She can show respect right here in Az when these soldiers ship out from Az and upon their return, which she has done here but rarely.   So why this trip over there at this particular time?   Because she wants something for herself. She wants support and votes for a third term and to be on the GOP ticket 2 years after that.   This trip is self serving for her and it is actually shameful  using those troops in this manner. IMO

@LegitQuestions   Janet Napolitano did not disrespect their Commander in Chief in front of the entire nation and then put that photo on her own ghost written "book" and tee shirts, to make money and self grandstand.

@LegitQuestions as a vet, i appreciate the gesture of thanks and the fact that someone would come to a hot zone to do so, but, as you stated before, there is usually a ulterior motive for politicians.  i feel that with jan....its all about the ulterior motive and not really the thanks. if she was so proud of our vets and their sacrafice she would have been more active in the Atencio death

@danzigsdaddy If image makeover had something to do with it, then the trip was a major fail. Now, as to the "Top Secret" nature of her disappearance, it's totally ridiculous. Was it all hush-hush because the Taliban put a price on her shrunken head?

@danzigsdaddy Thank you for your service and for your service as well  @royalphoenix

Agree with you completely.  If she really care about vets and your sacrifice, she would dedicate more resources to treatment for the underlying mental health issues that many vets have upon return from combat services so that someone like Atencio doesn't even end up in custody in the first place.  But taking care of our society's most vulnerable (both vets and non-vets) is a very low priority for our far-right legislature and she's shown very little backbone in standing up to the idealogues serving in Arizona's House and Senate.

Still, I have no issues with her visit to the troops.  No better or worse than any other governor or member of Congress doing it.

@eric.nelson745 it was kept quiet for a good reason, if you were in the middle of a war zone and they told you that as a special treat to improve morale they were bringing the sea hag for you.........wouldnt you go AWOL?

@LegitQuestions @danzigsdaddy @royalphoenix   She is the governor with a state house and office just a few miles from a Veterans Hospital.  That building is full of vets who need visitors, attention and respect.  How often has Jan been there as governor?  Is that Veteran Hospital even on her monthly or quarterly, even yearly regular schedule?  No.

@LegitQuestions i have residual problems from when i served in grenada, so to me the whole Atencio case is a touchy subject.  while i do appreciate the fact that someone would go to where our people are at to visit and thank them, i also see how something like Marty's case could happen, and Jan doesnt involve herself in the resolution or investigation of the problem. (i am fully aware that you dislike her intensely, but find it commendable that even though you dislike her, you praise her going to them to thank them. to me, that isnt thanking her for doing it, so much as it is saying that our armed forces need to be thanked, and for that.....i am honored and know that some people do acknowledge and are thankful for what we do or have done). granted many of us have come back either in one piece or mentally stable, but i am one of those who know what it is like to come back scarred in one fashion and have to find a way to fit back in to a world that we have difficulty adapting to anymore. i have had my share of run-ins with the law as a result of some of these problems, and they affect my life in many ways. i have not been able to find the help i need, and there are many people worse off than me. i see what little concern or help is extended to us and it is saddening to know how little help people will offer us, or any other unfortunate who is having problems. when i went to fight in grenada, i fought for my country as did Marty Atencio, but now i see the very people we fought for (I.E.: Jan Brewer, Joe Arpaio, JoeArpaioFan, and many others) spitting on the sacrifices we have made. Marty was a true patriot, a damn fine american, and a hero for putting his life on the line, yet we all saw the video where the cops were dancing in victory over the abuse they rained down on a mentally ill man who carried the mental scars of his service. we all saw how Joe did nothing to honor this ill patriot who survived the horrors of war, only die at the hands of those who werent even honorable enough to go fight themselves. we all saw how our governor never involved herself in exacting justice for a man who never 100% made it through his war intact. and lastly we all saw the comments from JAF, who feels that a man who offered to defend his country at risk of life and sanity......deserved to die. while i do agree with you, that at least Jan is over there thanking them, she is also insulting them. she is only concerned about them just so long as they are carrying a rifle and shooting to defend us or fight for us, but once they are no longer on that front......she could care less about them. if she was really concerned and distraught for them, why isnt she visiting the ones who are back already and trying to make it through therapy from losing limbs, or visiting the ones who havent snapped back from seeing their friends blown to pieces by a IED?
