Citizens for a Better Arizona activists asking the county to count votes, and candidates to stay in races.
Yesterday, activists made a call for Sheriff Joe Arpaio-challenger Paul Penzone and Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Richard Carmona to stay in their respective races, which both men have already conceded to their opponents.

The number of votes remaining to be counted by the Maricopa County Elections Department was unknown early yesterday, but according to figured released later by Maricopa County Recorder Helen Purcell, there were more than 400,000 more votes to tabulate.

"Today we've tabulated 44,455 early ballots. Following the hand count, as required by law, we will process and begin tabulation of the remaining ballots," the recorder's office said, as reported by Stephen Lemons yesterday evening. "Presently we have approximately 115,000 provisional ballots to process and tabulate in addition to 300,000 early ballots left processed and tabulated."

Lemons noted that Secretary of State Ken Bennett estimates more than 600,000 votes have yet to be tabulated statewide.

As of yesterday evening, Penzone was down by about 88,000 votes. Basically, the remaining votes would have to swing very heavily in Penzone's favor for him to have a chance.

For Carmona, it's tougher to say, since everyone's involved statewide, obviously.

However, to quote basketballer Kevin Garnett:

At this point, do you think Penzone and Carmona should stay in their races?

When all votes are accurately counted then the question can be answered to who won the election. Afterward, Arizona citizens can have closure and move on to taking taking care of our community.

Congratulations to Sheriff Arpaio for winning a sixth term. Penzone is just a sore loser.

Out of all the uncounted ballots, most are likely to be fraudulent.  The reason why it is taking so long to count is because each one is scrutinized with a fine tooth comb to be sure each one is valid so don't get your hopes up. I am organizing a crew to go door to door to verify each ballot and I know what will be found - multiple registrations from the same address by people who don't even live there and who never have, dead people voting and people who have no idea what happened. But the most common fraud is a provisional ballot and an in-person vote by the same person. This is all called voter fraud and it will be discovered. Therefore Penzone and Stauffer should give it up and quit being sore losers because they lost fair and square.

Yes, stay in Paul.  If I read that correctly, there are 400,000 to be counted and not sure why anyone would think that there  could not be, a 1000,000 of those against Joe Arpio.   I want my vote and my $ contribution to Penzone to count for something.  One statement to the media, Paul, due to all the uncounted votes, is all it takes.  Let the voters of Maricopa County be heard for once, all of them!

I'm interested to see the official outcome. If things actually change, perhaps it means voting early might not be the way to go. That or just don't watch the news on election night.

I'm curious, if they have already publicly conceded can they still win and take the positions if the votes end up going their way?

They should stay in the race so long as they have a chance of winning.

@66rock Paul is just a sore loser, plain and simple. He lost and that's that. The additional ballots that have not been counted are being carefully scrutinized to weed out fraud. Each one will be verified for its validity before it will be counted. It is likely that many of those ballots are fraudulent so don't get your hopes up too high.

@blessed2003plus Paul lost, plain and simple so you might as well back down because its over. Those uncounted ballots are carefully being reviewed to weed out fraud. Likely most of them are fraudulent and that's called voter fraud. Give it up.
