Scarier Thought: Joe Arpaio as Sheriff at Age 84, or Andrew Thomas Serving as Governor?

Categories: Morning Poll

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (left), and disbarred attorney Andrew Thomas.
Two guys are talking about running for public office in the next several years, and the thought of either man being elected ought to scare the pants off a good amount of people.

One is Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who claims he's already prepared to run for re-election in 2016, when he'll be 84 years old. The other is disgraced and disbarred former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, who's apparently considering tossing his name in the mix for governor in 2014.

Arpaio already declared victory in the 2016 election, saying on election night this year that everyone's going to "have to put up with me for another eight years." Either that, or he was really confused about what he was saying.

As for Thomas, our colleague Ray Stern reported yesterday that the county GOP website said Thomas "is considering running for Governor. He can be reached at (602) 803-1586 (cell.)."

New Times readers ought to be familiar with the records of both men, so hold your nose, and pick one over the other. What's the scarier thought: Arpaio being re-elected as Sheriff at age 84, or Thomas being elected as governor at any time?

I have not heard bac from truthseakeraz but though I would add this bit of information regarding the Presiding Disciplinary Judge William J. O'Neil.

Here is the documentation showing O'Neil and Gallo live next door to each other and have for years, not disclosing this is a very serious conflict.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/113542723/Oneil-Gallo-Conflict-With-Docs

Just how many other conflicts has O'neil not disclosed and how many people have not recieved a fair hearing because of it.  All of O'Neils openions and rulings should be suspect.

fixpinalcounty

It would be nice for "folks" to get informed.

O'Neil reinstated Carmen Chenal, then sealed her State Bar file, whats there to hide.

O'Neil sits on a 3 person pannel with next door neighbor, does not disclose this conflict to at least 5 individuals he is conducting hearings over.

O'Neil "does not recall" making rulings on cases which should cause him to recuse himself.

There is much more .....

Then there is the complaint, yes folks get informed.  Is this who we want watching out for the ethics in this state.

We have a long list of immunities which judges, prosecutors and law inforcement enjoy and exploit.  Absolute immunity, prosecutorial immunity, judicial immunity, absolute immunity and there are more.  Judges, prosecutors, judicial employees and law enforcement have all or part of these immunities to protect themselves from bad and illegal behaviour.  My earlier post is placed to cause people to think, the individual who is supposed to be the most ethical judicial/legal person in the State of Arizona shows to be so unethical.  The problem does not stop here nor with judges but it is a good place to start.

Again read the complaint on William J. O'Neil, the Arizona Supreme Court Presiding Disciplinary Judge and you decide.

What is needed is oversight and accountability for County Attorneys and County Sheriffs along with term limits.

Eliminate "immunity" for them and many cases would dry up along with all the $$$'s the taxpayers are being bilked out of. Most of the criminals are on the outside protected by "immunity".

Prosecutors, NOT judges have all the discretion and power in the courtroom.

Thomas and Aubuchon should have been indicted, but now given a pass to come back at the public and create further chaos. Immunity for prosecutors must be ended. NOW!

ConcernedCitizenAZ

Arizona does not need a former chief legal counsel for Arizona Department of Corrections, as its next Governor, much less a disgraced and disbarred former Maricopa County Attorney. One who should have been indicted, not "immune" from prosecution.

http://prisonlaw.wordpress.com/2011/07/18/new-study-prosecutors-not-police-have-driven-prison-population-growth/

New Study: Prosecutors, Not Police, Have Driven Prison Population Growth

"The United States prison population has exploded over the past 40 years. But why? Have police been making more arrests? Have prosecutors been charging more people with crimes? Have judges been issuing longer sentences? Have parole boards become stricter? (All of the above?) Since many accounts of mass incarceration collapse “the criminal justice system” into a single monolith, it can be hard to know exactly what part of the system has driven the growth in the prison population.

A new empirical study by Fordham law professor John Pfaff aims to provide a more granular explanation of the causes of mass incarceration. Pfaff concludes that only one other relevant number has changed as dramatically as the prison population has: the number of felony case filings per arrest. In other words, police haven’t been arresting more people:...."

Folks this is not a plug for Andrew Thomas.  We have a problem in this state and a lot of it starts with the Judiciary and the lack of oversight.  The Arizozona Supreme Court Presiding Disciplinary Judge, William J. O'Neil has his own ethical problems. See the complaint filed with the Commission on Judicial Conduct.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/112852009/William-J-O-Neil-Arizona-Presiding-Disciplinary-Judge-judicial-complaint

Should not the judge who is supposed to be the most ethical of all be completely clean.  Rather there is a federal investigation into his activies in mortgage/short sale fraud  activities and the list goes on.  How can someone who has an unethical past possible clean anything up.

It is scarier to have Andrews as a governer because he is a crooked lawyer and has already shown us how he can bend the law to suit is own agenda. I don't think he should even be allowed to put his name in for the running.

Oh, and as far as Joe is conserned, He is getting too old and will make so many mistakes he will have to step down sooner or later. Hopefully sooner.

^ the ironic thing about that is, I literally don't know ANYONE who voted for Arapio this year. And with all these ballots that "still need to be counted" it just makes me lose that much more hope for our state. Plus, we apparently are trying to secede now (laughs) and if that happens (laughs a little harder) then, well, fuck it. I will SPRINT to CA!

Neither one is scary. But what is scary is if Penzone had won. He would have crippled Maricopa County down to its knees. he would not enforce laws and he would freely let illegal aliens steal ID's and work til their hearts content. That is what's scary.

@fixpinalcounty Judge O'Neil did an excellent job during the daily, months long disciplinary hearings. Many people across the country listened to it as well. In the legal professional circles, never heard complaints about Judge O'Neil.

Andrew Thomas and Lisa Aubuchon should have been indicted for damaging so many innocent lives with their abuse of power and disregard for the laws.

ConcernedCitizenAZ
ConcernedCitizenAZ topcommenter

@fixpinalcounty

The problem is Arizona's draconian mandatory minimum sentencing that put a non-violent, first offender in prison for 75 years - a defacto-life sentence (under Thomas / Aubuchon / Alexander).

The prosecutors, NOT the judges control the courtroom and outcomes. The prosecutors use draconian mandatory minimum sentencing, as a weapon for "easy" convictions and plea bargains (plea bargain trials).

The state prosecutors have vigorously fought against the people (at the legislature) any meaniingful reform to outdated, draconian sentencing and criminal laws which could save innocent lives and families, as well as millions of $$$'s for the taxpayers. The prosecutors sit in the legislature daily, like "prosecutor lobbyists"  on the taxpayers' dime. Why?

Thomas and Aubuchon should have been indicted and sent to prison for the innocent lives they have destroyed. Why are they given immunity while any "ordinary" person would be sitting in prison for decades?

Wake up folks, Arizona's draconian mandatory minimum sentencing with turning misdemeanors into felonies is what is destroying the justice system and the state of Arizona. A state that favors incarceration or education.

 @JoeArpaioFan No.

Penzone's victory would mean actual accountability from the MCSO.

Sex crimes thoroughly investigated.

No mismanaged taxpayer money.

Immigration enforcement handled according to ICE protocol.

Lawsuits virtually eliminated.

Jail conditions brought up to Constitutional standards.

Campaign-finance and election laws complied with.

Inmate deaths eliminated.

No taxpayer money wasted on President Obama's birth certificate.

No deputies staking out county management's and judges homes.

No more false arrests of journalists in the middle of the night.

I could go on and on, but I think you get the point....or maybe not....

@JoeArpaioFan and again you seem to believe the ONLY law being broken in Maricopa is identity theft. think about this Corky, who do you think sells them the ID? who do you think establishes these false identities? well golly gee superstar, that would probably be mostly white people. do some quick research, go through the MCSO booking photos and start reading the charges. if you can find 2 white people with identity theft, forging or similar charges....your theory is shot to hell. i posed a question for you before that you tried to avoid, so i will ask it again. say you come home from work, school or whatever, and there is one guy raping your mother, one guy killing your father and a 3rd guy wandering around your yard that cant speak english. you call the police and they send out 1 officer. do you want him to ignore the guy raping your mother, and ignore the guy killing your father and go directly to the guy wandering around your yard to ask for ID? if you say anything other than "forget the other stuff...check that guys ID" you are a  hypocrite. what do you do? the cop is only there for 1 of them, who do you want him to stop?

@dhuiz Nope he wouldn't and voters saw through him. he was just saying what he thought voters wanted to hear to elect him. In one of his commercials he used that 'anchor baby" girl to make the point that he would not separate families by locking up illegal alien mothers and fathers but yet he said on his web site he will enforce illegal immigration. he contradicted himself so it can only be assumed that he would ignore illegal immigration. And because he has been accused of domestic violence against his wife in 2003 do you think he would tough on other people who abuse their spouses? I doubt it. No, Penzone would likely turn Maricopa County into a lawless society. Thank God he was rejected. I say good riddance, Adios Penzone.

robert_graham
robert_graham

@david_saint01 No, your insane logic is twisted. Since when is it okay to ignore illegal immigration? Apparently you think it is okay to do. You're sick!

robert_graham
robert_graham

@danzigsdaddy No, there are more laws being broken than just Identity Theft.  Regardless who sells them the ID's doesn't make it valid for them to use them just like if somebody gave you counterfeit money it would not be okay for you to pass it.  True that who ever is making and selling counterfeit ID must be caught and punished and that would be a federal crime.  I don't care if they are white, black, brown or purple, they must be caught and charged accordingly.

Now to answer your question, the answer is I want the rapist caught first but that doesn't mean that the suspicious person in my backyard should eb exempt from having to show ID. I'd ask that the 3rd guy you are talking about is asked for ID not because he can't speak English but because he is in my yard without my permission.

But now let me throw a scenario at you and see if you know how to answer it intelligently. Let's say a Phoenix cop is sitting in his car on the lookout for traffic violators at say Baseline and central when all of a sudden a car runs the red light and almost plows into another driver. The officer then puts his car into gear, turns on his flashing lights and pulls the driver over. Now that's legitimate isn't it?  When the officer approaches the driver to ask for drivers license and insurance card, the driver has neither nor does he or she speak English. So being that the officer speaks Spanish he or she asks the driver in Spanish for his or her drivers license. The driver admits that he or she doesn't have one.

Okay, so now probable cause kicks in to allow the officer to go a little further and ask if he or she is in the country illegally or legally. Nothing wrong with that as officers ask people all the time whether they have illegal things in their car and where are they going to and coming from. the officer can ask what ever he or she wants, doesn't mean the driver has to answer so i don't see what the problem is with 'show me your papers". I have to show mine when I fly out of Sky Harbor. I have to show my papers if I return from a weekend trip to Mexico. I have to show my papers if I cash a check. If I appeared to be under 21 I would have to show my papers to buy beer. So, what's wrong with suspected illegal aliens having to show they are here legally? can you answer that intelligently? Truth is, it is unlawful to be in the United States illegally so why can't we enforce those laws?  Can you answer???

danzigsdaddy
danzigsdaddy topcommenter

@JoeArpaioFan Joe would send the cop to go after the guy who cant speak english, because he thinks that is the most serious crime. his story would change if it was his home that it was happening at, and you would change your story too. guess what retard, the guy who cant speak english isnt the big problem. that applies to both the scenario you have yet to answer and also applies to Maricopa right now
