Obama-Voter Ban at Gun Store Is Kind of Like a Don't Ask, Don't Tell Policy

The sign on the door of the Southwest Shooting Authority.
Attention Obama voters: we have found a way for you to get into the Southwest Shooting Authority in Pinetop, despite the store saying you're no longer welcome there if you voted for President Obama last week.

Owner Cope Reynolds tells New Times they can't really tell if someone voted for Obama unless they "own up to it."

See also:
-Obama Voters No Longer Allowed at Pinetop Gun Store -- "Effective Immediately"

We'd theorized that maybe the folks at the store might recognize the guy who pulled up to the store in his Toyota Prius -- wearing the tie-dye shirt, with a doobie tucked behind his ear -- might be the Obama voter.

However, Reynolds sent us the following e-mail explaining the situation:

Obviously, this is nothing more than a political statement. Of course, it would be impossible to enforce. If they don't say anything, we'll never know. They could purchase whatever they wanted, and they would probably get a big kick out of thinking that they are rubbing it in our face as they walk out the door. Some folks are easily amused that way.

However, if they own up to it, we will not serve them. This goes way beyond gun control, which many think is why we did this. I should have as much right to post a sign on my door as those that post "No Guns" on their doors.

Sincerely,
Cope Reynolds

Below, see the sign posted on the front door -- "to save you the trouble of walking all the way in here" -- followed by the full newspaper ad from Southwest Shooting Authority, in case you didn't see them earlier today:

Wow, and I notice something too. Most mass shootings are committed by right-wing psychotics who can't stand that things aren't going their way. Do you HONESTLY think that the so called "hippie leftists" would even WANT to kill? -.- it's always the anti-government freak-shows that commit these mass shootings OR it is someone who has been failed by the system thanks to republicans being to f***ing cheap to help them out. Some people need help! And they shouldn't be left out to die on the street because of it. But either way, these hypocrites should take a sock and stuff in their mouth while shoving a brick up their a**. They're crazy and they piss me off.

I voted for Obama. I own lots of handguns, rifles and shotguns. I go thru boxes of ammo. I'm obsessed. His opinion doesn't bother me but it doesn't seem like a good business decision to alienate anyone who might want to spend money in your store.  If I owned a business I would be friendly and respectful to everyone and try to get them to spend more.

While the gun store owner certainly has the right to put up whatever he sees fit on his own shop door, I think the "notice" that he did post makes him look foolish. He might as well have put that Obama was born in Kenya and put a secession petition under it. When you post things like that on your door, especially in Arizona, you come across as a right-wing zealot (something that we have an abundance of here in AZ), not to mention a cry-baby (oops, I just mentioned it) who can't handle losing.

Cope is getting some serious press time for free with his remarks.  It's a win win for him. EBT cards can't be used to purchase weapons or ammunition.  he's offended no one who would be desiring to make purchases in an establishment like his anyhow.  I might just have to swing on up to Pinetop and offer my patronage to the guy.

Cope is a moron. Clearly he's shown he's not responsible enough to own a gun store. Too bad Cope. Barack Obama is Still President of the United States. All tnose guns and you're still helpless.

thats a shame he feels that way, the Sea Hag wants gun rights restored to the mentally ill, so she feels they are responsible enough. looks to me like he's throwing a lot of revenue away. i'd rather Obama supporters buying guns instead of the mentally ill, at least we dont have to keep an eye out for Obama supporters at the movies or at shopping centers. (although we do have to keep an eye out for Romney supporters when they are driving. i wonder if they can refuse selling cars to Romney supporters since one of them already proved they arent resposible enough to drive?)

The best way to handle idiots like this, whether they are small shops like this or Papa Johns Pizza, which is not doing this but is saying they will cut employees hours to escape having to pay for Health insurance, is to not give them any business.

They have a right to run their business any way they like.

Just like we have a right to not use their business and to let everyone we know about these places, what they are doing and encouraging those people to do the same and not shop their anymore.

It is a Free Market and the best way we can let these companies know this is wrong is by not giving them 1 penny more, going instead to their competition and if possible, letting them know they have lost a customer and that you will gladly go to their competition instead of dealing with them.

One of the biggest reasons these companies feel they can get away with this type of thing, to their customers or employees is they think they have us the customer/employee over a barrel, when that is not the case.

There are other gun stores, hardware stores, pizza places and such so let's show these idiot blowhards just what a Free Market economy really is by refusing to shop at these places.

@reelman Looks like someone forgot to do their homework. Ever notice that the same people who were democrats back then, are republicans today? THATS BECAUSE IF YOU DID YOUR RESEARCH YOU WOULD SEE that the republican party today is the SAME DAMN PARTY as the southern democrats! Way back when, the republican party split into two parties. The bull-moose party was on one side (today's democrats) and the other side merged with the democrats of back then. DEMOGRAPHICS can tell you the story for christs sake!! Even if they were ONLY SLIGHTLY different! -.-

@yourproductsucks The owner of that gun shop sounds like the kind of irresponsible dickwad with a lot of emotional issues. If he keeps up with his prejudiced act, my best guess is that he'll be put out his misery..er...business in a month or two. The idiot owes rent on his business lease. Besides, he sounds like the sort who would either go on a gun rampage or commits suicide, when things don't go his way. I don't pity him, he's only hurting his business with a sign like that. Especially in a place like Pinetop which is surrounded by the Navajo Nation.

@yourproductsucks i did not vote Obama, but i find what he is doing both asinine and brilliant. you posted on the other article about this, that it was brilliant strategy. i have to give credit for making that observation, you nailed it perfectly with that comment. i didnt even know his shop existed till this. whereas many people are offended, MANY more than that will support his right to free speech. look at how the whole Chik-fil-a thing boosted their buisiness. i personally wouldnt travel that far, but there are many people who would. even though i did not support Obama, i find his statement childish, but he is entitled to his opinion. whereas it is not a claim to my patrons that i would make......he took a risk and did (and i am willing to bet that you are right, it  probably WILL turn out to be a brilliant move and boost his buisness) when i read about this the first time, i thought it would be a dumb move, but after reading your other comment i saw the brilliance. he paid for one ad, that ad got him way more publicity than he had paid for. for every person who walks away pissed, 20 more will come in support of his free speech

@Flyer9753 heres how i see it. these people are all saying that Obama is killing the economy, yet they do self destructive shit like this to themselves. I didnt support Obama, but i sure as shit aint gonna blame him for shit they  do to themselves. how in the hell can you blame someone for your buisiness failing if you are turning people away. if you let go a bunch of your employees, did you really think you would be able to continue running your buisiness and meet demand. there is nothing wrong with having beliefs and standing by them, but if your beliefs cause you to fail......dont blame it on the other guy, he didnt tell you what beliefs to take a stand on. prime examples would be Joe Arpaio or even Hostess. the union stuck to their guns at Hostess and refused to bend......look how thats working for them.  Joe took his stand on illegal immigration as a #1 priority.....look how that worked out. Hostess is going under, and rape and other crimes are being overlooked or mishandled.

No he is not. The economy was dying when he got here thanks to Bush Jr and the Republican policies.

The fact is that the economy is recovering, all economic indicators are showing consistent gains across the board that have lasted for the last 3 years.

You want to get into a debate on the economy we will based on facts and you will lose.

lol - yeah I love that experiment - another one is the gorilla at the basketball game. The Human mind is an amazing and tricky thing if you don't understand how it works and few people really know their own minds.

It's something that can be overcome, if one is willing to admit they can be wrong, after that it's easy and most people who have done it find they are a lot happier in life.

You are right, JAF is a prime example of this. I saw his comment above and was asking myself that same question since yeah, you never said anything about illegals.

danzigsdaddy
danzigsdaddy topcommenter

@Flyer9753 people only see and hear what they want to. the human mind is so stubborn it will actually BLOCK things out and refuse to see them. here is an experiment to prove it.  get a piece of paper and write on it in crisp clean bold letters in one line A WALK IN THE, underneath that line in the same writing, write THE PARK.  with the paper facing down, go up to someone and tell them to quickly flip the paper, quickly read it and flip it back down. ask them what it says. they will tell you "A WALK IN THE PARK" (with one THE). ask them to do it again just as fast. when they still see it that way, make fun of them. laugh and go WOW, YOU CANT READ HUNH? have them do it again. at this point they are pissed. you can then start asking them where they learned to read. they wiil get so furious and refuse to see the second THE. have them read it off one word at a time. you will hear them read it all and hesitate at the second THE. they wont say it but will go right to PARK. if you do this right, they can actually run their finger over the words one at a time and will still refuse to see the second THE. the mind will shut things out rather than admit it is wrong. prime example would be JAF. he comes at me sideways daily claiming that i support illegal immigration and Obama. i have never even given that impression, yet he can not see that

Flyer9753
Flyer9753 topcommenter

 @danzigsdaddy

I agree.

This is not about who is right or who is wrong since that would be an actual discussion, this is about prejudice either against a political ideal or a person or a race.

I have asked the question of a lot of Obama haters as to why they hate him. They say things like the economy, the wars, his policies, etc... and in every single one of these discussions I refute those responses with the facts time and time again.

It's an odd conversation because as you do it you clearly see them start grumbling to themselves that they don't want to appear stupid by not accepting the facts, but they also cannot give up the hatred.

Then they start saying they don't like his socialist/liberal policies, at which point I ask them about past presidents who have had similar policies and did they like them and so on, overwhelmingly the answer is yes since those presidents are Kennedy, LBJ, etc...I ask them if they like certain things like Medicare/Medicaid, taxes for roads, police and firefighters, taxes for airports, etc.. and point out when they say yes where those policies come and came from. Now they are really getting uncomfortable since they realize they are being hypocrites.

Usually about that time they switch to personal things, "he can't say anything without saying ah and pausing" or that they don't like "how he walks" (yes I have actually been told that), etc...

At which point I ask them why they are holding this president to a standard they do not hold other presidents to, which is exactly what they are doing and is a valid question, and all of a sudden the anger comes out and they start vehemently denying they are racists even though I did not say that word, nor indicate it in any way shape or form, but they sure got defensive about it really fast.

These are the same people who refuse to do their own research into the reality of what is wrong with the economy and how it got there since they supported those steps, thinking at the time they were the right thing to do. They refuse to admit they made a mistake and work to fix the problem, instead choosing to blame someone else.

There is nothing wrong with being wrong, we are all human and we are all wrong from time to time, but to a lot of people that is just not acceptable. Ego can be a real bitch at times.

My point being that this is not a hatred of his policies, it's not a hatred of what he has or has not done. It's a hatred of themselves since deep down they know they are either being hypocrites or racist or just plain wrong and they don't like it on a subconscious level so they refuse to acknowledge on a conscious level.

All this leads to them to continue making bad choices like this as a way to attempt to prove themselves right so they don't have to admit how wrong they really are and know they are. They are looking for anyone to come into their store and pat them on the back, thus validating their stance without acknowledging how bad it really will be for them and that the person patting them on the back is just as wrong as they were/are.

It's a cycle people get locked into, and just like anything else cyclic in the human mind, it's extremely hard to break out of unless you are willing to admit you are wrong and learn from that wrongness instead of hating it.
