Marijuana Legalization Passed in Colorado and Washington; Massachusetts OKs Medical Marijuana

Marijuana wasn't on the ballot again in Arizona this year, but historic elections concerning the intoxicating plant could affect how it's handled nationwide.

Colorado and Washington have become the first states in the country to legalize the possession and use of marijuana for any adult 21 or over.

Massachusetts became the 18th state, along with Washington D.C., to approve medical marijuana.

Some pot measures fared poorly: A legalization bid in Oregon and a medical-marijuana question in Arkansas, were shot down.

But the victories in Colorado and Washington, combined with the win by President Obama, who has allowed the marijuana industry to flourish even as he directs federal troops to bust select dispensaries, Tuesday's election is poised to forever change the so-called War on Drugs.

The federal government will face more pressure to choose between tolerance for the wishes of state voters or taking some kind of action against legalization.

The Obama administration could tell the Drug Enforcement Agency and other federal police outfits to respect and follow state law. Congress could also take action to support, rather than slap down, the wishes of Colorado and Washington voters.

Republican Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery and state Attorney General Tom Horne have argued in a closely watched lawsuit that medical-marijuana cannot be dispensed in Arizona because it's against federal law.

Their arguments will evaporate if pot is sold like booze in Colorado stores and the federal government does nothing.

And maybe Arizona voters will finally get what they voted for in 2010.

The DEA Dead Enforcement Agency is getting ready to send you pot smokers to Guantanamo.

On the contrary, the outcome in Arkansas was far better than expected failing with only a 2% margin.  That means that 48% supported it which is far higher than anyone expected.

People are starting to realize that when enough states legalize MJ, for whatever purpose, the federal government will have no choice but to bow to the overwhelming will of the people and drop Marijuana from it's enforcement.

On Oct. 16th arguments were heard regarding the DEA's mis-classification of MJ and the court is leaning heavily in favor of ruling it IS mis-classified.

Add these states, plus the others that already have MJ legal in some aspect, along with the now known to be accurate polling (95%+ of the election polling was 100% accurate, to the republicans shame) that shows an overwhelming majority of Americans want it legalized and the Federal Government will have no choice soon or it will be decided for them.

Once a majority of states pass MJ laws, and we are much closer now to that majority, then the Fed will have no choice under our legal system since that would indicate a majority.

Small steps but we will get it there.

For a factual breakdown of the history of MJ, the laws regarding it and the overwhelming benefits of it to society, manufacturing, etc...  read The Emperor Wears no Clothes. Learn the truth that has been hidden behind the propaganda for to long.

The Department of Justice's enforcement of the Controlled Substances Act remains unchanged," read identical statements issued by the U.S. attorney's offices in Denver and Seattle. Washington joined Colorado in voting to become the first states to legalize and tax the sale of marijuana for recreational use, but people shouldn't expect to be able to buy a bag of legitimate weed any time soon. Nor should they expect the law to go into effect with out a fight with federal law agencies, said Sam Kamin, professor of law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. “My gut feeling is that the federal government won’t currently tolerate the commercial recreational sale of marijuana, that is they will not allow it to be regulated like alcohol. That just seems a bridge too far,” he said.

The Indian wars lasted 100 years (Afghanistan 10 years) - it was a horrible period in our history.

The Slavery period lasted over 400 years - it was an even greater moral disaster in our history.

The Pollution by Oil, Coal and Gas industries - Millions have died of asthma, cancer, and autoimmune diseases. The Drug Wars lasted 70 years - for the numbers of people's lives destroyed with prison and property confiscation and the amount of time involved - it was by FAR the greatest disaster affecting this country in our history!

Don't count on it, the last thing politicians care about is the will of the voters.

Denver already has medical marijuana dispensaries on every street corner in certain neighborhoods. Not much of a change coming for that city. It's time to get rid of the asinine and counter-productive drug laws.

I think the DEA will become much harder on Colorado and Washington. Now that they're legal, they're primed to become the major source of distribution within the US. It's much easier to move drugs between states instead of across militarized borders.

Arizona has to keep it as illegal as possible. After all, they're building 1500 more PRIVATE prison beds and they have to justify paying back their corporate masters in the private prison industry.

@PotSmellsLikeShit I understand that the smell of cannibas offends you.  That is unfortunate. I take it you are disappointed in the smell because it puts you off using the plant in a manner beneficial to your health, something you had looked forward to after we, the voters, made it legal for that purpose.  Well, do not be upset for long as I will now give you hope that you can now benefit from the medicinal properties of the plant, cannibas sativa without having to experience what you consider a malodorous scent.

There are many methods of ingestion which can render the "smell" so to be indistuingishable from nothing. The best way is to experience the health effects of cannibas and not have to endure the smell of smoking it is to extract the juice from the cannibas leaves and buds.  Putting another herbs, Stevia (preferably orange or citrus flavored stevia), into the mixture will make it entirely palatable and the smell is fairly pleasent.  Also, with this method of ingesting cannibas you will not experience any of the recreational aspects of the plant - in other words, you will not get "high" - but you will experience the medicinal effects of cancer supression, increase in appetite, mood elevator, sleep aid, and the many other health benefits of ingesting cannibas.
