Joe Arpaio Sidesteps $3.25 Million Jail-Death Settlement, Throws a Fit About Cost of Feeding Inmates Thanksgiving Meal
|Sheriff Joe Arpaio is very sorry about your G.D. nickels.|
The latest press release from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is a bit apologetic in tone, because the cost of the Thanksgiving meal for the inmates this year is five cents more per meal than the crap the inmates eat every other day.

The Thanksgiving meal for inmates -- complete with sliced turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, broccoli, bread and butter, and a brownie -- costs a "whopping" 68 cents per inmate, compared to the typical 63-cent meal.
Across approximately 8,500 inmates, we're talking about a whole 425 extra dollars for this Thanksgiving meal, and not only is Arpaio "dismay[ed]" by the "astronomical increase" in cost over previous years, but he promises he'll rectify the situation.
"Because there is such a substantial food cost increase, Arpaio is formulating a new plan to offset the burden on taxpayers and will announce that plan in the coming weeks," MCSO's press release says.
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved a $3.25 million settlement on Tuesday for the family of diabetic Deborah Braillard, who died in 2005 after being denied medical treatment in one of Arpaio's jails.
Of course, that's in addition to the $50 million-plus tab run up thanks to Arpaio-related lawsuit costs. Jeezus, the Thanksgiving nickels aren't even enough to cover the cost of investigating the friggin' president's friggin' birth certificate in friggin' Hawaii.
But don't worry, folks, they'll be cutting back soon after the Thanksgiving splurge.
"It's an astronomical increase, but it's important to provide a sense of tradition to the inmates in jail," Arpaio says. "While the daily inmate fair is not particularly tasty, the Thanksgiving meal is something that some inmates look forward to."
This year, it's pretty apparent that Arpaio's giving "thanks" to the very slim majority of voters who still have a fetish for being pissed on.
