Obama vs. Romney: Arizona's Anti-Immigration Law Gets Mention During Second Presidential Debate

Governor Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama during contentious second debate.
Arizona's anti-immigration laws and policies were center stage during part of the second presidential debate at Hofstra University in New York.

President Barack Obama criticized Governor Mitt Romney for pledging to veto the DREAM Act and saying that "self deportation" was his plan to address the millions of undocumented immigrants living in the United States.

"His main strategy during the Republican primary was to say, 'We're going to encourage self-deportation.' Making life so miserable on folks that they'll leave. He called the Arizona law a model for the nation. Part of the Arizona law said that law enforcement officers could stop folks because they suspected maybe they looked like they might be undocumented workers and check their papers," Obama said.

Romney corrected the president on his comment about Arizona's law being a model for the nation:

"I did not say that the Arizona law was a model for the nation in that aspect. I said that the E-Verify portion of the Arizona law, which is -- which is the portion of the law which says that employers could be able to determine whether someone is here illegally or not illegally -- that that was a model for the nation."

Obama came back to reiterate that Romney -- even if he wasn't referring to SB 1070 as a model for the nation, one of Romney's advisers is the author of that law, which mandates that local cops act as immigration-enforcement officials and question individuals they suspect are undocumented about their immigration status.

"I do want to make sure that -- I do want to make sure that we just understand something. Governor Romney says he wasn't referring to Arizona as a model for the nation. His top adviser on immigration is the guy who designed the Arizona law, the entirety of it; not E-Verify, the whole thing. That's his policy. And it's a bad policy. And it won't help us grow," he said.

Several media and political fact checks found that Romney was correct in that his reference to E-verify, but also noted that Romney widely supports Arizona's SB 1070 and said during his primary campaign that he would drop the federal lawsuits against it from "day one."

The Romney campaign also has tried to distance itself from Kris Kobach, who helped draft the SB 1070 law and filed suit to stop Obama's administrative action.

From ABC News:

In April, the Romney campaign described Kobach as a "supporter" rather than an adviser to Politico's Glenn Thrush, but Kobach then told ThinkProgress he was communicating regularly with senior Romney advisers.

Kobach still was "providing advice on immigration policy," he told ThinkProgress. "I don't want to go into great detail, but I communicate regularly with senior members of Romney's team."

Romney repeatedly criticized Obama for not even trying to fulfill his promise to pass comprehensive-immigration reform during his first year in office.

Obama said that wasn't true: "I have sat down with Democrats and Republicans at the beginning of my term. And I said, let's fix this system. Including senators previously who had supported it on the Republican side. But it's very hard for Republicans in Congress to support comprehensive-immigration reform, if their standard bearer has said that, this is not something I'm interested in supporting."

The moderator asked Romney about his ideas on "self deportation," a comment he made during a primary debate against fellow Republicans vying for their party's nomination.

"Self-deportation says let people make their own choice. What I was saying is, we're not going to round up 12 million people, undocumented illegals, and take them out of the nation. Instead let people make their own choice," Romney said. "And if they -- if they find that -- that they can't get the benefits here that they want and they can't -- and they can't find the job they want -- then they'll make a decision to go a place where -- where they have better opportunities."

After questions about job growth, tax policies, gas prices, and workplace equity for women, a young woman asked Romney what he plans on "doing with immigrants without their green cards who are currently living here as productive members of society."

Romney says no amnesty, no driver's license -- that the priority is that the U.S must stop illegal immigration.

"There are 4 million people who are waiting in line to get here legally. Those who've come here illegally take their place. So I will not grant amnesty to those who have come here illegally," he says.

Romney's plan includes putting in place sanctions for employers who "hire people who have come here illegally ... I won't put in place magnets for people coming here illegally. So for instance, I would not give driver's licenses to those that have come here illegally as the president would."

Kris Kobach is responsible in large part for E-verify, and SB1070, (Attrition/Racist) Laws which have Crashed, and Divided America.

Kris Kobach has Strong ties to Racist Russell Pearce, and I believe to Pearce's Nazi/Extremist Pals.

E-verify would be a good Law if America had first dealt "Humanely" with the Millions of Good, Hard Working Christian People, and thier Legal Citizen Children  that have been here for up to thirty years.

Tens of thousands of Families have been torn apart, with Parents being Deported, or Incarcerated away from their "Legal" Citizen Children!

This is what caused "The Great Recession", The "Foreclosure Crisis", and "The New Ballooning National Deficit".

"America is great because it is good, when it ceases to be good, it ceases to be great."

Fact: The Hard Labor Immigrants gladly did for America was the very Foundation of our Strong Economy, and the twenty-five year period prior to the January 2008 start of E-verify, and I.C.E. Deportation/Incarcerations was in fact "The Most Prosperous Period in Total U.S. History."

This is our I.C.E.'d Economy.

The O man, Barack Hussein Obama, is an eloquently tailored empty suit. No resume, no accomplishments, no experience, no original ideas, no understanding of how the real world works, no balls, nothing but abstract empty rhetoric devoid of any real substance. Finally the American people are taking the time to look at this mans leadership and realizing he has been a complete failure. Obama talks immigration but like everything else he does its just talk.

Did you know that one can fake all his/her personal information to obtain a visa to enter U.S., after his/her first application of visa is denied, and ICE officers would not even bother check it up (same picture)? If this person change his/her name in U.S., marry a US citizen, become a U.S. citizen, although the laws says he/she can still be deported, in reality, U.S. law made it really difficult to catch them and prosecute them, so all ICE officers give up. You think these bold immigrants are going to be law-abiding and are willing to benefit America at large during their gold-digging advanture in US? Of course not! They will study every single pitfall of our legislations, and use them for their own benefits. Many of them make big money quick by taking advantage of trusting Americans, and send the money to their own country, to their own parents and relatives, and even co-operate with their government to lobby White House. They use their innocent spouse to do the dirty work. They teach their children how to "succeed in U.S.", and send them to the best university, make friends with the rich and powerful, then ensure U.S. law will protect illegal immigrants. When all these had been taken place for decades, the vase majority of Americans still think illegal immigrants are just some poor and uneducated mum and dad from the third world, filling up low-paid job vacancies in which local are not interested.

Dear JAF, please stop sucking your lover ARPIE-ASS-HOLES'  dick! Maybe if corporate AMerica didn't get rich of the backs of these people thanks to NAFTA and other rigged "free Market" trade  agreements, these "illegals", especially the hard working mexicanos, wouldn't be so desperate to come to this country and be at the mercy of it's corrupt politicians and remarks from shit for brains  like you and HDPPL! ;-)

I caught how "immigrants" "grow our economy." I don't care if the "immigrant" took Joe Stack's job or the shit shoveler down the street's job. "Immigrants" taking jobs when citizens are unemployed does not "grow the economy" of any of those citizens. The only way "immigrants" can "grow the economy" is if the US government is a corporation and sells shares/futures on estimated aggregate production of it's assets (the humans it owns by virtue of their birth certificate and/or social security number or tax ID#) - kinda like dead peasant policy. I know they want to kill this sovereign stuff but honestly for the life of me I cannot do the math any other way. Millions of unemployed citizens plus the few jobs there are filled with "immigrants" = economic growth?

The DREAM Act must be repealed and it will be.  That will be Romney's first priority when he is sworn into office.  Simple logic will tell you that DREAMERS can go back to their home countries to get the necessary paperwork and return after they are legal.

And by this morning Romneys advisers were backpeddling corrections over everything he was saying last night.

It comes down to this. The republicans want cheap labor which is why they did nothing about this for the 8 years that Bush was in office and it was an open door across the border

In the past 4 years there have been more deportations than in the 8 years of a republican in office - fact - look it up

Romney is a known and proven flip-flopper and panderer, meaning he says what people want to hear at the time but there is no way he is actually going to go against those who are funding his campaign and want cheap labor

 @sarum Hey Dip Stick,

January 2008 started The E-verify Law, the I.C.E. Deportations, the "Great Recession", The "Foreclosure Crisis", and "Our New Ballooning National Deficit".

If Immigrants Hard Labor does not "Grow our Economy", then why was the twenty-five year period prior to E-verify, and the I.C.E. Deportation/Incarceration Programs "The Most Prosperous Period in Total U.S. History"?

Wake up America, we must get past this Racism, and Hatred.

@DNichols Huh? Nobody was talking about race till you and your troll friends brought it up. Expecting politicians to do right for taxpaying citizens and former taxpaying citizens first is part of their job - otherwise what are we paying them for? Oh that's right, we don't pay them anymore - the corporations do. The corporations who used the availability of illegal immigrant workers to lower wages & disenfranchise citizen workers. Conflict of interest = YOUR'E FIRED! The criminality of the financial sector combined with the collusion of corporate owned political traitors is what created the boom & the bust. "Immigrants" played a part to be sure but if you truly believe what you write you are in a sad position because the corporations and politicians and financial wizards who did this to the US people (of all races) will have no problem doing the same to you.

@homedepotparkinglot Sorry but I disagree. We pay for our politicians to work with US & our needs first. They have been traitors to US for decades. Even in the debates I hear how some have better training than our people. Now how exactly is that? The richest nation on earth flunks public education & higher education but levies more student loan debt than anywhere on the planet? & I KNOW children of the Reagan amnesty stuck with student loan debt & my family IS Mexican (partly) so don't even tarnish me with that brush.

oooo one poll that already leaned republican anyways - that's really accurate.

Why don't you tell the rest of the story, like the 4 other polls that show he won the debate and is already seeing a bounce?

But then again, you have never much cared for anything that is outside your 'reality' bubble anyways so I don't know why I bother asking

The only fraud is the one the republicans have been perpetrating on the world since the 1930's

Agreed but let's also be candid blunt and factual here.

Until I see evidence that what she was saying is true, or that what others have said is true, I take them all as information to be considered but not proven factual.

Now if anyone is voting for Obama due to the killing of OSB or anyone else for that matter, they are voting for the wrong reason IMHO and the facts to determine who was telling the truth last night in regards to OSB are simply not available so again, it's not something you base a vote on IMHO.

IMHO you base votes on performance versus obstacles.

Did Obama do everything he said he wanted to do in 2008? No, but in all fairness he has factually faced the most do-nothing obstructionist congress in history.

I unlike many others actually (not meaning you) understand how our system of government works and understand that for all the bluster, the President really has very little power.

That being said, when you look at the performance figures for this Presidents Congress they are just abysmal and show that it didn't matter if it was a good bill, they would filibuster it anyways which is not governing, it's petty sandbox crap that has no business in our government.

And who is responsible for that performance? The Republicans, plain and simple and this is factually proven.  (links to documentation provided if you want)

As the saying goes, it's hard to fly with eagles when you are surrounded by turkeys and the current Pres/Congress relations prove that easily.

Is it too much to decipher? Yup, and that is why it's so important to keep finding the credible, factual and accurate information that is out there and pull it out of the muck of the rest so it can be seen.

No one said Freedom and Democracy were easy but then again few things that are worthwhile are.

sarum

@Flyer9753 @godhatesdems Agreed. Just a point that both R-listers & D-listers play us, and even in last night's debate - they cannot agree on the facts so with even the facts subject to spin how can anybody be truly well-informed voter? But to vote for one because he killed an already dead boogie man that was really a CIA asset - sheesh! Too much to decipher!

Also interesting and food for thought.

To be blunt though, at this point with all the different timelines, claims and theories going around from all different directions (including the US Administration), about the only thing that will really make any matter now is a picture of his body with a legible and identifiable newspaper laying on top of it in such as way as to make photo manipulation almost impossible

There are actually a couple of screen shots during the debate where the camera was on Obama replying and debunking Romney, yet you could see Romney in the background and he actually winced and jerked as if he had just gotten an electric shock several times when Obama was calling him on his lies.

Romney's body language and attitude was clearly that of someone who was on the defensive, knew it and knew he couldn't do anything about it without digging the hole deeper.

IMHO Romney won the first debate primarily because of Obama losing it

This time Obama beat him easily and Romney lost on his own

danzigsdaddy

@ExpertShot  i forgot about that, but i dont think i worded it right about the first one. he didnt do that bad, i just think romney just beat him in the first one. the second one though.....i dont think romney really knew what hit him. he had romney stammering at one or two points. as i said, i dont care for Obama, but he definately handed romney his ass on the second debate.

I do not want to see a bloody revolution either and I think I made that pretty clear above when I stated that with the words " I fear" on the end of the sentence

I do however know my history quite well and also do believe in one of our founding fathers statements regarding revolution to be true, no matter how much we do not want it.

That statement being that "the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants, it is it's natural manure"

Do I want that revolution to be bloody? Hell no, and while you are right we have a revolution every time we vote, the voting system in this country has become so corrupted, along with the political engine itself, the realist in me looking at history acknowledges that we may not be able to avoid exactly what Jefferson was talking about there, no matter how much we try.

Do I want a bloody revolution? Hell no, but I am not afraid of one either.

I do agree that much of the broo-ha-ha that goes on is mis-direction so you are paying attention to the mouth while the hand is picking the pocket.

Luckily the smaller and more accessible world that we have now thanks to the Internet, as well as the millions of people now able to do independent research thanks to the internet, means less and less of that is able to happen as time goes on.

Flyer9753
Flyer9753 topcommenter

Agreed.

I don't like a lot of what Obama does either and when it all boils down they both suck, it's just to what degrees they suck.

It's like it has been for years and years in this country, picking the lesser of the evils rather than the one who will be best for the country and it will continue to be that way until we get rid of the 2 party system and get term limits in place.

Something that is going to take a revolution to do I fear, since we need congress to abolish term limits and they are not about to slit their own throats

Either way, this shit - and I am talking about something a lot bigger than Obama or Romney or the Democrats or the Republicans - cannot sustain, the only question is how bloody it will be to put it back the way our founding fathers envisioned with reasonable and responsible updates for 21st century technology
