Sheriff Larry Dever Didn't Have Seat Belt On When His Truck was Found; Feds Check Forest Road for Problems

A picture released of Dever's truck shows the severity of the rollover accident.

Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever wasn't wearing a seat belt when his body was found on Tuesday night by a deputy following Dever's fatal rollover crash near Williams.

Dever was killed when his 2008 three-quarter-ton Chevrolet pickup slid off a forest road and rolled just after sunset. He'd been on his way to a hunting trip with family members.

Gerry Blair, spokesman for the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, tells New Times that a deputy on scene soon after the crash noticed that Dever didn't have his seat belt on.

That doesn't necessarily mean Dever wasn't wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Blair adds. It could have popped open at some point during the incident or just after, he says. The medical examiner's office will determine whether Dever's body has any bruising that could indicate he actually was restrained as the vehicle rolled.

As our last blog post on the details of Dever's crash mentioned, beer cans were found at the scene, but were believed to have come from a cooler in Dever's pickup bed. The deputy at the scene didn't smell any odor of alcohol coming from the cab or see any open containers, Blair reported previously.

So far, the Coconino Sheriff's Office is only saying Dever lost control of the truck for an unknown reason. Blair told us on Wednesday that "one school of thought" by investigators is that Dever had been going too fast.

The investigation into why the crash happened is pending.

Dever had been driving southbound on Forest Road 109, about two miles north of White Horse Lake, in the Kaibab National Forest. Although some initial media reports stated that the road had been the site of previous car crashes, Kaibab spokeswoman Jackie Banks says she's not aware of any in recent memory.

Roads on national forest land are still governed by Arizona traffic laws, Banks explains. That means drivers must always need to be traveling at a reasonable and prudent speed for the conditions. Some forest roads have speed limit signs, but not FS109.

Forest Service engineers inspected the road near the crash site yesterday and will report back on any factors that might be a concern, Banks says.

Its a sad situation for the family. my condolences to them. However, now maybe some new information will surface on the Robert krentz murder. I believe Cochise County Sherriff officials have covered up a lot of information. I believe Mr. krentz stumbled on something big and bad going on involving Border patrol, Militia, conservative entities supporting SB1070 or law enforcement, (or all 4) possible involved in illegal's and or drugs. The whole theory that was piped out to the heavy right media organizations, that it was an illegal sent by the cartels, I believe was a farce.. too many stretches of the truth and unanswerable questions there.

Get real, some unknown bad guy jumped the border, with a gun (past border patrol units, sensors, cameras, mounted patrols, motorized patrols, militia crazies, sheriff patrols, aircraft, ect.), walked 30 miles, just happen to find Mr. Krentz (with no unsupported way of having any idea where Mr. Krentz would be or who Mr. krentz actually was), shoots him and his dog, leaves a perfectly good motorized vehicle, turns back and walks 30 miles back to mexico ( past border patrol units, sensors, cameras,......ect.) jumps the line and disappears into thin air.... what I cant believe is how many people believed that shit... no way in hell it went down like that...   The truth will eventually come along. Carma is a bitch.

If I had to guess I'd say that the left side of the front hit first and the truck rolled to from left to right.

You should have followed what you would have ticketed me for.....put your seat belt on

I live in Cochise County, and this was my theory - speeding and not wearing a seat belt.  But you should read some of the conspiracy theory crap circulating outside of the state - that PBO had Dever killed over immigration issues.

I'm sorry for the loss of this sheriff to his family and the Cochise County community. I hope the investigation is unbiased and truthful.

Oh now you want to attack Sheriff Dever.  If the Phoenix New Times hasn't already been banned in Cochise county, it soon will be.

Lets see, ray has reported that Sheriff Dever was speeding, not wearing his seat belt and had beer in his possession at the time he was killed (all in separate articles).  This is the most detailed reporting this rag has had.  Great reporting Ray!  What's your conclusion?  He deserved to die for committing two civil traffic violations with a legal possession of alcohol as a kicker?

@JoeArpaioFan Banned in Cochise County? Banned after PNT had this headline with an earlier issue's historic cover story: "Larry Dever is a Real Sheriff"?

Dever's friends and supporters can accept truth about him, even if something might be unpleasant to hear. The crash is no different. There's no cover up here. There is no attack. The legacy of Larry Dever can handle it.  Arpaio and Babeu have never been able work well with the truth. Big difference.

Your main Daddy Joe and Pinal's Daddy-boi Babeu spend their time and use their staff to cover their misdeeds. For Joe, let's try something as simple as having a Crown Vic get away from him. For Babeu, let's try something as simple as having a penis he had to advertise for.  What a man to have to try and get a blind date for your aged manhood.

Those are easy ones. What did we get out of it? Lie and laughs. At the other end of the spectrum there continues to be misspending, corruption and misuse of power by both of them. And more lies and no laughs (except between themselves).

Being the keen NT reader you are, you should already know that hard copies of the New Times are not placed in racks in Cochise County. Duh.

The online New TImes will continue to be there for you, JoeArpaioFan, to read, to enoy and to help you with having a special place to make your senseless whimperings.

You cannot tell us who Larry Dever and Cochise County S.O.'s public information officer is or ever has been. Nor can I. Kind of refreshing to a well-known and respected sheriff, isn't it.

Likewise, we cannot FORGET any or all of the PIO lackeys who have come out over the years performing for Arpaio and for Babeu. Some of them have done notable attacking of others, especially the media (when they don't obey).

Just like their bosses.

@yourproductsucks he didn't deserve to die, but maybe if he and many of the other idiots in this state that don't wear their seatbelts would buckle up maybe they would survive. So far I have not heard of a single case where NOT wearing your seatbelt has lead to survival versus wearing it.

Tommy_Collins
Tommy_Collins

@yourproductsucksActually, Mr. Stern has written that other sources have mentioned that speed might have been a factor, that he was reported to not have his seat belt on, and that cans of beer were found at the scene. It seems you have inferred more from this article that may have been implied.

I find reporting by Mr. Stern to be ethical, honest and fact based. I'm sorry you chose to "read between the lines" for something that probably wasn't there. By the way, this story was about one of the 'other' fourteen county sheriffs in Arizona. Not your idol.

@yourproductsucks you know, i dont agree with you on so many things, but you at least present a decent argument with some kind of research. this time, you evidently did not read the article. seriously, i am disappointed in you. please reread that article. the info given is directly from the police and none of it is derogitory or negative. he is relaying the info THE POLICE and police representatives have given him. do not resort to the same level as JAF, delusional paranoia. it is sad that a damn fine all around sheriff like dever has passed and reading this article i do not think they did anything insulting. they said they believed the alcohol to be from a cooler NOT from in his lap. they even said there was no smell of alcohol. they said even though his body was found without a seatbelt, he may have had it on when the accident occured. he did not say dever was speeding, the cops said it MAY have been a factor. dont try to see this as a slander story, because if you reread it, you will see it isnt. the police release this kind of info on every fatal wreck, are you suggesting that just because Dever was a LEO the accident info should be suppressed? i give you more credit than that, dont act like JAF

@yourproductsucks This calls for war against the Phoenix New Times. This web site should be attacked and each and every one of their newspaper racks should be vandalized and their papers burned.  They are nothing but losers.

@yourproductsucks  Well Rachel, given your boss over at MCSO has quite a bit to hide, I don't think you should be asking that question.

Tommy_Collins
Tommy_Collins

@yourproductsucksThe news reports I've read so far say the truck 'rolled' which implies implies side to side. The photo of the truck with this article shows a frontal flipping, as opposed to a rolling action. I would expect that the body of the driver would be found in the back seat, as opposed to having been rejected during a rolling action. Obviously, without photos of the actual crash scene I really can only give it an educated guess. I don't expect anything might be hidden. But stranger things happen, and it's often associated with police investigations of police officials. I expect an unbiased and truthful investigation will result.

@TellTheTruth  well said. one of the things that made Dever such a good sheriff is the fact that he was concerned with doing his job, not doing media circuses. he was a man who was out working and doing his job instead of trying to hold a press conference. Dever proved you can be a tough yet fair lawman and not only do your job, but do it right and do it with pride and dignity without posing for the cameras. if Dever would have run out here for sheriff, joe would never have been on the ballot. the man didnt demand respect, HE EARNED IT. sheriffs like arpaio and babue stain the image of what Dever did and was.

@Tommy_Collins I don't idolize arpaio.  I don't even like arpaio.  Your petty little jab is cute.

You are annoyed because I criticize your idols...your love affair with lemons and stern and that chubby yaqui distort your ability to think objectively.  You leave no room for dissenting arguments.

@danzigsdaddy  @yourproductsucksZigs, you're spitting into the wind. YPS does not have the ability to separate his idols from reality. He still thinks there was nothing wrong with Sousa and Palmer making fools of themselves shouting to the world, "SHUT UP, JUST SHUT UP", simply because someone was critical of the MCSO shurf.

MaskedMagician1967
MaskedMagician1967 topcommenter

@JoeArpaioFan  And guess what happened when that was attempted by your hero, mentor and savior the MCSO shurf?

Dennis Wilenchik, who was acting at the behest of the MCSO shurf and Candy Andy Thomas,  tried to order NT to submit its readers names, IP addresses, etc. He falsely obtained grand-jury subpoenas. He tried to have ex parte communications with the judge assigned to the case.

Afterwards, the entire 'investigation' was quashed, Phoenix New Times sued for $15 million, and the Old Fool does not have immunity from the lawsuit.

@pszymeczek  @Tommy_Collins  @yourproductsucks I will continue to call you a moron because as stated above my truck has A goddamn back seat (with enough room for 3 fucking people in it )and it's much smaller that that huge fullsized truck, so surely it has a backseat much like mine.

pszymeczek
pszymeczek

@ptcgaz  @pszymeczek  @Tommy_Collins  @yourproductsucks No, I am not an idiot.   Perhaps you can refrain from calling people names long enough to allow an explanation.  Look at the amount of room behind the main side windows to the beginning of the truck bed.  If there are seats in back of the front bench at all, they are probably what are called "jump seats" - one small center-facing seat on each side.  That is usually what is behind the front bench seat in a truck like that.  Certainly not a full bench seat, and likely not enough room for a guy that size to be thrown back there and land in a seated position.  THAT is what I meant by "not really a back seat."

ptcgaz
ptcgaz

@pszymeczek  @Tommy_Collins  @yourproductsucks are you an idiot? there is a back seat in teh back of his truck. I have a Toyota Tacoma that has a BACK seat.. duh.

As for the picture it looks like he crashed off the road into a ditch which send the front end of his truck into the ground and then it rolled.. maybe after he smashed into the dashboard, windshield or the steering wheel. What was the cause of death?

I, however, don't idolize any of the reporters of any of the print (web) media.
