The "Undocubus" protesters, after being released from ICE custody.
Undocumented immigrants who rode across country on the "Undocubus" to protest immigration-related deportations were arrested outside the Democratic National Convention yesterday.

The "No Papers No Fear" mission is supposed to make the point that Dems are as unfavorable to the "Undocubus" riders as Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio when it comes to immigration enforcement.

According to our New York sister paper, the Village Voice, the activists were dropped off in a Charlotte intersection, and sat on a banner in the intersection while holding up signs that said "Undocumented."

From the Voice:

As the police waited, a hard rain began to fall, soaking police, press and protesters alike. Still, the standoff remained. Delegates and conventioneers on their way to the convention center stopped and stared, trying to understand what was happening. Protesters chanted "No papers, no fear! Dignity is standing here!" and "Obama! Escucha! Estamos en la lucha!"

After about 40 minutes, police started making arrests after several warnings, taking in 10 protesters.

Although the protesters obviously faced deportation, the protest's organizers say they have all since been released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.

After the arrests, the group put out the following statement:

"We came out because we are tired of the mistreatment. We are tired of waiting for change and we know that it never comes without risk or without sacrifice.

We know what is at stake in our actions. We know that the Republicans have decided to completely turn their back on our communities.  We also know that President Obama's legacy on immigration is undecided.

We want him to be on the right side of history. And we know that it is the effort of our organized communities that will make that happen.  We want him to be remembered as the one who found the way to include the millions struggling for a better life in this country, not to be remembered as the President who deported more people than anyone else in the history of the country.

We want President Obama to use his executive authority to provide relief from our entire community, students, parents, and all of us."

Puente - this is a dumb protest.  It's not designed to do anything.  Create sympathy?  Acceptance?  Violence against the protestors?  There's nothing in it as a tactic.  Oh, yeah - a nice bus trip across the US.  That's cool.  But what else?  Ya got nothing to show for it.  If you are trying to create a system of government which no longer needs borders, you'll have to do that people to people.  It won't be a top down achievement.

BTW - I agree with the sentiment to not have borders in this planetary spaceship of ours. It is an inefficient and destructive use of our common resources which we need to make sure we've got viable transport through this region of the galaxy in the next 4000 years.

However, we are a simple organism among many other biological entites on this planet and I don't expect much from this planet in the future.  I do feel that a solar flare will shortly create the existence of a borderless planet as you wish - because our atmosphere and some remaining http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerobic_organism will be wiped off and transmitted to Venus.

You protesters make me sick. You can be tired of the policy all you want but just because you are does not change the fact that being an illegal alien is illegal.  What part about that don't you understand... ILLEGAL!

See people I told you before that this would happen but you didn't believe me.  Good, that is what they get for thumbing their nose at the government.  Now deport each and every one of them!!!! Ha ha ha.

I like it when illegal aliens are arrested, but I like it more when they are deported.

The press release states: "We want President Obama to use his executive authority to provide relief FROM our entire community, students, parents, and all of us" (emphasis added)

I hope that this is a New Times typo and not a typo in the original press release.  There are many (like dumb-ass JoeArpaioFan) who would say that the only way to provide relief "from" illegal immigrants is to deport them all, which is not the message I think they were trying to send.

Next time, it may be helpful to double check with a native English speaker before spouting off.

@JoeArpaioFan Does it piss you off that every one of these immigrants belong to a better class of people than you do?

@JoeArpaioFan The part about why you don't understand that a civil violation of the immigration laws is not a criminal violation and not subject to ANY criminal penalties.  That's what I don't understand about your meaning of ILLEGAL.  I also don't understand why you don't realize that the President of the United States is at liberty to control immigration through his Administration.  He can decide unilaterally where to expend funds in the enforcement of our laws, not you, not the Sheriff, THAT's THE LAW!  It's called the Constitution of the United States.

Sure, they were arrested for blocking an intersection.  Same as you would be if you sat yourself in the middle of the intersection.  They were cited and released.  Just like you would be.  If you actually bothered to read the article, or were capable of understanding it, you'd realize that the arrest had nothing at all to do with immigration status.  They were not detained by ICE, nor were deportation proceedings begun against them.  So, as usual, you were wrong and nothing you said was going to happen actually happened.

@guest You might shit in your tight pants when I say this:

ICE just released them. All of them. Perhaps, they're now following the new deportation policy, implemented by Obama, where *ONLY* the violent and dangerous criminals are deported. Maybe you better give ye ol' joKKKer a call in NC while he's still there at the funny farm.

@LegitQuestions No, I think they meant to say "from".  They just spent 10 days on a bus together - they all know what pains of the ass they can each be.  They were really, sincerely, trying to warn us about themselves.

@LoneWolf  @guest They will be rearrested.  They are here illegally.  They are not supposed to be in this country. They do not have green cards nor do they feel they have to have them.  Well screw them, get them out of this country.

@JoeArpaioFan  @LegitQuestions No, that would be doing something for President Obama.  Such a nice thought.  BTW - How did that work out for you when you offered to perform fellatio on our President?  Did some of his spunk get on your vest?  I'm just assuming that you have personal experience or otherwise you wouldn't be suggesting that activity to other people.

@JoeArpaioFan  @LegitQuestions I remember when you did that Scott! That was TOTALLY awesome!  It was such a statement of your total committment to the Anarchist cause.  Yeah, you stole the money but you didn't want it cause it was part of the EVIL system of government controlled capitalism.  THank you for your service the state - OF ANARCHY!!!!

@ExpertShot  @LegitQuestions Trying to get arrested will get you arrested because it is the same thing as a bank robber standing outside the bank he or she just robbed who says "I just robbed a bank, now arrest me".."
