Jon Kyl Accuses Obama Administration of Apologizing to Embassy Protesters, Goes Straight for the Rape Analogy

Not intended to be a factual statement ™
Attention Senator Jon Kyl's press secretary: please re-send the statement clarifying that the senator's words are "not intended to be a factual statement."

Kyl's getting attention now because he told a group of reporters that a press release put out yesterday by the U.S. Embassy in Cairo "was like the judge telling the woman, 'You got raped, you asked for it because of the way you dressed."

According to the Washington Post, the statement that Kyl was referring to was the same one Mitt Romney criticized, which said -- in part -- that the embassy "condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims."

Later that day, protesters reportedly attacked the Cairo embassy and the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

How does Senator Kyl feel about that?

"It's like the judge telling the woman who got raped, 'You asked for it because of the way you dressed," Politico, Roll Call, and the Washington Post quoted him as saying. "That's the same thing. 'Well America, you should be the ones to apologize, you should have known this would happen, you should have done -- what I don't know -- but it's your fault that it happened.' You know, for a member of our State Department to put out a statement like that, it had to be cleared by somebody. They don't just do that in the spur of the moment."

In case Kyl didn't notice, Republicans haven't been doing such a great job talking about rape recently (see: Akin, Todd).

If you still agree with Kyl's sentiment, he could've used an analogy of getting robbed, or even murdered, or just something that wasn't rape. People don't seem to be pleased with those analogies these days.

This is fair warning people - the teatards and their republicant allies are trying to start a religious war.  I am reading more and more on the right wing blogs calls for armed rebellion against our President and government.  These facists are becoming unhinged and repeating the most outrageous lies in order to whip up the extreme elements among them to commit violence.  Look for a domestic terror event to occur shortly - Go go Southern Poverty Law Center's website and look up the increase in hate groups, neo-nazi groups and nativist groups in the US - it's up by FOUR FOLD over the last 3 years.  I don't envy our Homeland Security folks, they must be working overtime to keep tabs on these monsters who want to kill millions of innocent men, women and children in a religious war which this country's constitution was specifically designed to prevent.  I know we're all mortal and will leave this earth soon - but while we're here, I'd like to think we can work to improve the ability to raise our children in peace and security for the people who come after us.  These teatards are trying everything they can do to fugk things up.

We need to stand up to them and say NO!

Wow. Just wow. All sheep waiting to be led by the nose to slaughter. Both parties are equally corrupt. Can't you see you're tearing the country apart from within when now is the time to put aside our diffrences and stand united? This is exactly like what happened in Iran during the Carter administration... History is repeating itself. Welcome back to the Cold War.

lost in this whole mess is Terry Jones, and his despicable actions and the shame he brings on Christianity. Matthew 7:1 , "thou shall not judge". Amazing a self proclaimed pastor has ignored this, as if he never read the Bible.

President Obama does not support those terrorists, period. Think about it, if there are protests generated by a group of cowardly Muslim extremists towards the U.S. Embassy because of an anti-Muslim video in a Muslim country, of course the Embassy leaders there will have to release a statement to prevent destruction and death. The sad part is Americans still died and the Republicans attacked our POTUS before he even made an official statement. Kyle and Romney should have waited to hear the whole story before putting their foot in their mouth.

az luke, im sure you looked up the facts and saw what time that original statement Romney condemned actually came out right? 6 HOURS before the protest started genius...next time try the facts, not what romney tells you...sheep

So one would have to surmise that Kyl is comfortable with the theme of the idiot's film that started this fiasco. Incitement produces cold-blooded murder and Kyl's gets his knickers in a knot over the US Embassy in Cairo?

A US Ambassador is murdered and Kyl is still a smarmy ass. It's the content of the movie that is the issue here.

HaddieNuff
HaddieNuff

Kyl's entire career can  be summed up with his now signature comment: "...not intended to be a factual statement."  The sooner he's gone, the better.

As for the statement released by the embassy, it said:

"The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others."

Where is the apology in this statement?  What kind of alternate reality do you have to live in to even twist it into an apology?

Perhaps Kyl would have been better off to use the example of the church that pickets funerals of our soldiers killed in action waving signs containing the most vile and disgusting comments about the fallen soldier.  That's certainly a practice of free speech, but it doesn't make it any less despicable.

No doubt about the abhorrent simile he used but I wonder if Kyle has had the misfortune to see the misguided, abysmal and "provocative" movie by a supposed jewish american that they are protesting? Let me say that if Jesus has been portrayed in a similar way Kyle and the religious right would be spitting fire and sulphur, once the had recovered from their seizure.

This seems to becoming a habit with Republicans as of late....

Open mouth, insert foot and start CHOMPING!

I mean these guys are not just sticking their feet in their mouths, they are knawing up to the knees!

First we have Romneys bitch, Ryan and his disgusting rape comments

Then we have Romney shooting his mouth off prematurely (two separate problems and Mrs. Romney probably hates the second one, assuming they even do it anymore) by accusing Obama of being weak early on and now trying to backpedal away from his earlier comments as fast as his feet can carry him - only of course though because of the backlash he received due to the comment

And now you have yet another republicant doing the same thing, now making AZ once again look like fools to the rest of the world and once again reminding everyone of Ryans early fuckup by associating his comments with rape

If nothing else convinces someone to vote for anyone other than these idiot teatard republicants, the last few weeks have been the best evidence anyone could hope or ask for.

@david_saint01 Jesus states:“You have heard that it was said to an older generation, ‘Do not murder,’ and ‘whoever murders will be subjected to judgment.’ But I say to you that anyone who is angry with a brother will be subjected to judgment. And whoever insults a brother will be brought before the council, and whoever says ‘Fool’ will be sent to fiery hell” (Matthew 5:21-22).190

and

Be careful about not living righteously merely to be seen by people. Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven (Matthew 6:1).

and

I am not writing these things to shame you, but to correct you as my dear children. For though you may have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, because I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I encourage you, then, be imitators of me (1 Corinthians 4:14-16).

and

Jesus’ instruction on prayer in Matthew begins this way:

“Whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray while standing in synagogues and on street corners so that people can see them. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you” (Matthew 6:5-6).

What don't you radical religious zealots get about NO REWARD if you boast about your religion and try to start wars based on differences in faith in god?

@egerton38702 who are any of us to criticize people under siege? These are our fellow Americans they are talking about..not Obama, the people in the Egypt Embassy. Further, the original statement came out BEFORE the protests, and that was the one Mittens spoke of..now he is trying to claim it was the second one they put out during the protest. Any way you slice it, this is pure political bullshit and completely unacceptable! How about showing some patriotism and standing behind and supporting our fellow Americans in these places instead of bullshit politics? disgraceful how some have tried to make this an opportunity for themselves. Mitt showed exactly why he is NOT ABLE to handle the Presidency.

@HaddieNuff You are dead on about the reality thing and I have often wondered that myself talking to people I know who are on that 'side' of the issues.

It truly is a reality/perception thing almost to the point of one person seeing the color of something accurately and the other perceiving it to be an entirely different color.

I wonder if that is why there seems to be no reasonable talking to these types of people since from their perspective, they are seeing things in 'trucolor' - kinda of like someone who has been color blind there entire life, how do you explain color in a way they can perceive?

Anyways, didn't mean to diverge all theory/philosophy wise.

Spot on comment :)

@pecee69 No doubt about that.  And the actors in the guy's little "movie" were apparently not aware that they were being used to defame a religious figure.  The dialogue they were given did not do that and was re-dubbed later.

I've stopped trying to engage Republicans on anything.  It is an exercise in futility.  Most will not listen and speak over you the minute you bring up facts.  Those who are polite, will not continue the discussion because it is obvious the I "have been so brainwashed by the liberal media."  It amazes me how otherwise reasonable people can be so rigid, so unwilling, so devoid of common sense.  And all because there is a Black man in the White House.   AlterNet.org has a good article on the difference in personality between conservatives and liberals.

Good articles, and thanks for sharing.  I had done some reading on the Right Wing Authoritarian Personality Type, but that wasn't quite as full a picture as the articles presented.

I also liked comparing explaining color to a color blind person.  Seems to fit the situation perfectly.
