Joe Arpaio's Deputies Go After Construction Workers for "Employer Sanction Operation" 67

In this episode, Bob's work friends go to jail.
After rounding up Mexican restaurant workers and patio-furniture repairmen, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has carried out its third "employer sanctions operation" in the last two weeks, by arresting some construction workers this morning.

That marks Sheriff Arpaio's 67th "employer sanctions" operation"/illegal-immigrant roundup, as 15 workers at the Glendale-based United Construction Group were arrested for allegedly using false identifications.

According to MCSO, the two other arrests were of suspected illegal immigrants who were actually at the place looking for work.

Again, Arpaio claims Immigration and Customs Enforcement "refused" to take these men, and they were handed over to Border Patrol.

"These individuals indirectly open up employee opportunities for businesses and help increase employment for those in the country legally," Arpaio says in a statement.

That is false, according to a policy study from the libertarian Cato Institute.

United Construction Group now is missing more than 12 percent of its workforce.

Including the two men arrested today who weren't actually employees, MCSO has rounded up 664 suspected illegal immigrants through 67 of these operations.

Of the ones forced to leave, most probably are back in the country by now.

Im going to start by saying Im a democrat and open minded. However, I cant help but support anybody who is trying to give American jobs back to American workers. AND, dont tell me Americans dont want these jobs because that crap. my first job out of HS was framing. I work construction for five years before I got a job building pumps. When that job went bust to outsourcing (to Mexico) I tried to re-enter construction. I left making $12 hr. They wanted me back for $8. Why....? Because they could hire a Mexican for less money. Its happen in not just farming but electrical, pluming, masonry and so on. SO...... What about the people who lose out because of ILLEGAL immigration???

so all these months long investigations before a sweep are pretty much pointless. he spent 5 months setting up his last sting and netted 5 people washing dishes. we had a parking lot security guy spend 20 seconds that led to the arrest of 15, and he didnt have to neglect the rest of his job to do this either. Joe should have the parking lot security guy rewrite his procedures and policies and train his officers. because he just proved he's better at joes job with less experience and probably only making $12 an hour

I will respectfully request that no one post any further responses to the individuals posting as JoeArpaioFan.

joe has effectively created a revolving door system. he comes in and arrests them but not the people hiring them. more people will come because there is a constant employee turn-over, and the employers will hire more illegals since they dont get arrested for hiring them. this is not a solution to the problem, this is making it a self perpetuating problem. the only jobs joe is trying to save is his own.

It's good to see Joe and his men doing their jobs.

i think the tea party ought to put the palo verde security guard for the 1st checkpoint up as their candidate instead of arpaio. he found the illegals that were in a nuclear power plant while joe was trying to stop dishwashers and guys washing cars. that guy has done more for the security of our nation and county than joe has in his entire 80 years

Good for Joe, there is no room for any of you to complain BECAUSE THOSE WORKERS ARE NOT ONLY HERE IN THE UNITED STATES ILLEGALLY, THEY STOLE OTHER PEOPLES IDENTIFICATIONS TO GET A JOB THERE AND THEY STOLE THOSE JOBS FROM THE AMERICAN WORKER!!!!

What part about that do you not understand?  Let me say it again so listen carefully and I will break it down into three parts.

(1) Those workers arrested admitted that they are illegal aliens meaning they are here ILLEGALLY.  They have no business being here.

(2) Those workers arrested stole the identities of other people to get those jobs.  It is called identity theft.  Identity theft is a serious offense.

(3) Those workers arrested stole American jobs.  In today's bad economy there are many people out of work including construction workers.  Jobs in construction are jobs that Americans do want and deserve first.

How would you like it if some illegal alien stole your name, social security and drivers license to gain employment or would you welcome it?  If you are unemployed and looking for work how many times have you been turned down for a position at a company because they have no openings?  Maybe it is because illegals are working there so why are your services needed?

Sheriff Arpaio is doing the right thing each time he raids a business like the one in Glendale today.  Not only is he taking illegal aliens off our streets, he is opening up jobs for American citizens.  And he will keep doing it as long as he is in office.

Flyer9753
Flyer9753 topcommenter

Isn't it just amazing how many of these raids have happened in the last 30 days, now that we are closing in on an election, while in the year prior to this past month, there have been almost none.

And how many employers has Joe gone after? ZERO - you want to get rid of illegals, get rid of the reason they are coming here, LAW BREAKING EMPLOYERS

But Joe won't go after the employers, those are votes that Joe cares about getting, so he won't do anything to anger those LAW BREAKING EMPLOYERS

And what will happen after the election IF (and it's a big if) Joe wins? These busts will once again slow down to 2 or 3 a year total, just like it has in previous non-election years.

Wake up Joe supporters, he is playing you and your heart strings like a violin

danzigsdaddy
danzigsdaddy topcommenter

this just goes to show that Joe is NOT serious about security, safety or the law. if there were 15 illegals working construction at a high security facility like a nuclear power plant, WHY WAS JOE BUSY ARRESTING DISHWASHERS?.  this also goes to prove that the flaccid fool does not know how to establish priorities. he isnt Americas toughest sheriff, he's barney fife. just a tip joe, if your crack officers could have spotted the illegals going to the nuclear power plant BEFORE A RENT A COP DID, maybe you wouldnt be such a joke. penzone and stauffer dont have to buy air time for their campaigns, your advertising for them jackass

danzigsdaddy
danzigsdaddy topcommenter

Evidently maricopa is only plagued by one crime, we have illegals, but no rapes, no murders (outside of the ones in his jails by his officers). we know this because "Americas toughest sheriff" seems to only be devoting his energies to immigration. maybe if joe would actually acknowledge these other crimes are happening at a staggering rate, we could then get him to work on these crimes

danzigsdaddy

yet he cant find a single child molester or rapist in a town of 30,000 when they hand him the name of the rapist, or even a couple hundred of their names.

@StudleyPeckers They would be doing their job if they arrested the owners of these businesses as well.  They would be doing their job if they actually served the outstanding warrants piling up in the office.  They would be doing their job if they investigated the hundreds of sex crimes they've ignored over the years.  They would be doing their job if they arrested the pedophiles and the rapists involved with the 438 sex crime cases they have failed to investigate.  Now that would be good to see.  Joe's one trick pony show of rounding up the illegal contract day laborer is nothing but a media whoring farce.

@Flyer9753 Thats factually untrue. Actually Joe Arpaio has given summons to every employer who he has raided. And' many have gone to jail with the workers. At least three companies have gone under including the Macoronni Grill on I10 & Ray. The Mac Grill had other problems as well but it never re-opened. I dont always side with Arpaio. I too think he's a bit corupped but they all are and so I have to look at what it is he has done for me. I have seen with my own eyes how ILLEGAL take jobs and lower wages. Its a fact.

danzigsdaddy

@Flyer9753 just like since its getting close to the election, he will look into 59 out of 432 rapes (in one town, and only because everyone is watching). but after the election?  "IF" he wins, he will kick these cases and victims to the curb AGAIN.

@danzigsdaddy Cry us a river you idiotic fool.  You seem to not understand that being here illegally is illegal and that stealing other people's identities is a felony.  What part about those things do you not understand?

@danzigsdaddy I find it hard to believe that in El Mirage with a population of about 20,000 people there have been an alleged 500 cases of sex abuse.  But hey, in Phoenix with a population more than 100 times there haven't been half that many reported in the same amount of time.  What's up with that?  Could it be that the cases are fictitious or inflated as a political attack or what???????

@danzigsdaddy  @Tommy_Collins Most candidates that have money left over after a campaign donate it to a charity

A lot of the money in Arpaio's war chest is personal money though. That he would get back

Tommy_Collins

@danzigsdaddyDon't quote me on this, but I think the money belongs to the campaign, not the party. However, if the old guy chooses not to run for another office, or should cross the eternal finishing line before he has a chance to, the balance of the fund can be transferred to another candidate (maybe Barack Obama?) of his choice. I'm not sure it has to be within party lines, but don't know for sure. I am NO expert on these election issues, just spouting opinion based on what I've read along the way. I'm fairly sure a guy by the name of Randy Pullen will know what to do with any unspent funds. Also, it might be noted that in excess of $6 million was already in the campaign. In the big picture the old guy has raised very little in the past year.... which says HUGE things about how the local party sees him... which is also why I saw just ONE "Endorsed by the Geriatric Fool" sign this year. By one David Smith who got his ass handed to him in the primary....and he was the incumbent. Not many local Repubs hanging on the trim of the old guy's skirt this year...

danzigsdaddy

@azlefty i hear you. joe cries about immigration but cant see that the problem is with the people that hire them. if you have one illegal, maybe that guy slipped through the cracks, but if you have 15, thats a little harder to explain. joe would rather cry and then go on television saying he is the only one doing his job. WRONG joe, you are doing nothing but sustaining the problem. and the whole time he is doing that, he is ignoring everything else. rapes are up, child molestations are up, murder is up, but the number of dishwashers is down. even I.D. theft is up (big tip Joe, white people are doing more identity theft than the immigrants. who do you think they are buying the I.D. from)

danzigsdaddy
danzigsdaddy topcommenter

@Flyer9753 the only way he will look into anything that isnt a immigration issue is if it has been already ignored for 5 years, its election time and the ignoring of your case has drawn national attention (and even then he will only look into 1 out 7, and look into it grudgingly)

 @LegitQuestions  @danzigsdaddy

Now you have nailed it :)

This has been going on since the late 1930's

Granted it's been a lot less noticed up until lately. When it started it started like anything, slowly and has been ramping and ramping more and more each year as the legislation get's 'massaged' to be more amicable to the behavior we are seeing lately.

The expansion of immediate communications and a much smaller world because of those communications is throwing a lot of light on what has in the past been unseen, since now it's much easier to get news about something out - even in just a youtube video - and much harder to squash news about something since this new 'media' is almost impossible to influence the same way that corporate media can be with money or the threat of lost money to influence coverage.

In the past we would see little peaks and teasers as a story would get a little air play or something before it got squashed, then it got squashed and since societies as a whole (and esp. the US) have extremely short memories unless it's pounded into them for a week+ those peaks and teasers disappeared quickly and were labeled 'conspiracy crap' by most.

Now it's much harder to squash information you don't like.

 @LegitQuestions

You are correct that a vast majority of his contributions are coming fro out of state donors, however Joe and his wife are quite wealthy themselves.

He and his wife DO HAVE several million of their own funds they could dump into his election fund, but to date have only put in a small portion of those funds according to public releases.

Between he and his wife's holdings they have amassed quite a large bank account. His wifes companies no bid contracts that came about as a result of Joes and her own connections have done wonders for them.

That doesn't mean that there aren't sneaky ways around this statute.  For instance, A.R.S. 16-1915.01(A)(4) permits the funds to be donated to a 501(c)(3) charity.  A candidate could create a charity, donate the surplus campaign funds to the charity, and then be named to be executive director of the charity after he or she leaves office at a generous salary.  Would that be converting the funds to personal use?  The answer probably depends on whether Tom Horne is the AG and the candidate is a Republican?

QstionEvythng
QstionEvythng

@danzigsdaddy  @Flyer9753 Per A.R.S. 16-1915.01, surplus campaign money cannot be converted to personal use.

16-915.01. Disposal of surplus monies; transfer of debt

. . .

B. Surplus monies shall not be used for or converted to the personal use of the designating individual, in the case of an individual's exploratory committee, or a candidate, in the case of a candidate's campaign committee, or any person related to the candidate by blood or marriage. Nothing in this subsection precludes the repayment of a loan made by the designating individual or candidate to his campaign.

@LegitQuestions  @Flyer9753 it would just bother me if there was a couple million that was left and he got to keep. because that would in my opinion be him profitting off of the deaths of unsentenced people, uninvestigated sex crimes, systematic racial profiling, and costing the tax payers millions of dollars. to me that would just be profitting off of crime

QstionEvythng
QstionEvythng

@Flyer9753    Flyer - Disagree with you on the source of funds.  I believe that the vast majority of Arpaio's campaign funds come from out of state donors.  For instance, AZ Rep reported that from Jan. 1 through May 31 Arpaio's campaign received $140,000 from Arizona contributros and more than $800,000 from out-of-state contributors .  I think that this has been fairly consistent since the 2008 election cycle.

While it bothers me that out of state contributors are buying our sheriff, I think it would bother me more if Arpaio (who's entire career has been working for the government) had $4m or $5m in cash to drop into his campaign.  Of course, go back to the reporting that got Lacey and Larkin did about Arpaio's efforts to hide public records about his vast valley real estate holdings and maybe he has been able to amass that kind of fortune on a public servant's salary.
