The Arizona Diamondbacks dealt another blow to the Los Angeles Dodgers' playoff hopes Wednesday night at Chase Field, beating them 3-2. It was the Dodgers' sixth loss in seven games and the D-Backs' 10th win against them this season.

More importantly for the D-backs, the win kept their faint playoff hopes alive as they moved to within four games of the National League's second wild card spot. The problem: Four teams -- reeling L.A. and Pittsburgh, and surging Milwaukee and Philadelphia -- are ahead of them in the chase.

Starting pitcher Trevor Cahill was on top of his game Wednesday, going seven innings, giving up two first-inning runs, only four hits, and striking out seven. After giving up two hits in the first inning, Cahill settled down to retire 20 of the next 22 batters.

Outfielders Justin Upton and Gerardo Parra drove in all three of the D-backs' runs. With closer J.J. Putz injured, David Hernandez shut down the Dodgers in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.

The D-backs are off today but will begin a three-game series at Chase Field against the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants on Friday. Rookie Tyler Skaggs (1-1) will take the mound against Giants ace Matt Cain (13-5). First pitch is at 6:40. TV: Fox Sports Arizona. Radio: KTAR 620 AM. More info: www.dbacks.com.

Your write, "It was...the D-Backs' 10th win against them this season."  Actually, the Diamondbacks are 12-6 in 18 games against the Dodgers this year- both 6-3 at home and 6-3 in LA.  I know that the AP article you copied this from states "The Diamondbacks have won 10 of the past 12 meetings between the clubs" but this doesn't mean that the teams have only met 12 times this season.  All you have to do is read the daily game notes published by the D-Backs media relations office (you are media, right) to get these types of stats. You can get all of the game notes here: http://mlb.mlb.com/pressbox_open/clubs/archive.jsp?c_id=ari&assetlist=game-notes.

And lest you think otherwise, I do not work the D-backs or any other sports team - I'm just a fan like you are.
