John McCain Gives Stamp of Approval to Ben Quayle, Stamp of Disapproval to David Schweikert

The three amigos (left to right): Senator John McCain, Congressman Ben Quayle, and Senator Jon Kyl.
Senator John McCain joined Senator Jon Kyl yesterday to announce his endorsement of Congressman Ben Quayle.

McCain's statements yesterday were a little more refreshing than the typical endorsement press conference, which is typically just an opportunity for ass-kissing.

McCain also had a thing or two to say about Quayle's Republican primary opponent, Congressman David Schweikert, and his style of campaigning.

"There are lines I and Jon [Kyl] have watched over the years that should not be crossed," McCain said. "...Character assassination, and innuendo, and allegations that are patently false, I believe, have no place in the political environment in Arizona -- a state that is very proud of the people we've had represent our state ever since our statehood."

McCain then showed everyone specifically what he was talking about, as he held up the Schweikert campaign mailer that claimed Quayle "goes both ways."

McCain described it as "not appropriate," "not acceptable," and the "worst that [he] has seen."

Kyl -- who's already endorsed Quayle and already had some harsh words for Schweikert about that same mail piece -- also chimed in to "reiterate" those stances, saying he wasn't a fan of "junk like this [mailer]."

McCain said he'd been planning to endorse Quayle for some time now, but thought yesterday made for good timing.

He explained a few policy positions in his decision to endorse Quayle over Schweikert, mostly on national defense issues.

McCain pointed to Schweikert's opposition to the Patriot Act and the National Defense Authorization Act, while Quayle followed McCain and Kyl's support of them.

There's still debate going on about both of those acts, but McCain said he and Kyl "think we understand the issues," given their histories dealing with national-defense issues.

Schweikert has a "fundamental misunderstanding" of the country's national defense, according to McCain, and added that Schweikert never even consulted him on either of those issues.

Later, McCain was asked whether Schweikert had sought his endorsement, to which McCain replied, "Of course."

According to Schweikert, that never happened.

McCain/Kyl say that Schweikert "has a fundamental misunderstanding" of defense

issues.  That reminded me of a story I heard about thirty years back about then-Sen.

Danny Quayle.  I don't recall where I read it.  Anyway, Quayle and several other

senators were discussing defense issues.  Quayle was going on and on about some-

thing about which he knew basically nada.  The longer he talked, the more exasperated

Barry Goldwater became.  He couldn't stand it any longer, so he told Quayle to "sit

down and shut up."  Bennie Quayle, anyone can tell you, has zero knowledge of defense

matters.  Like father/like son?

John McCain claimed that Arizonans are proud of the people elected to represent the state since President William Howard Taft signed Arizona's statehood bill.

Um, no, Senator McCain. Arizonans are NOT proud of our elected state leaders. This is the state that elected disgraced, corrupt, narcissistic and mentally sick Pearce, GED Jan, Tom "Banned for life by the SEC" Horne, Candy Andy Thomas (who now thinks he's a movie character), Evan Mecham, Fife Symington, woman-beater Scott Bundgaard, the Flaccid Fucknut, the Bald Bunion, etc.

It's time to rid ourselves of these corrupt POS's at the polls come November!

Sounds like daddy Quayle made a few phone calls.

John Mclame needs to get out of politics, his corrupt ass has been in too long. Why don't Arizonians care that this guy took bribes from someone who stole the life savings of old people? And btw Charles Keating fits in so well in AZ...

Like the endorsement of the man who picked Caribou Barbie as his running mate is a positive?

The fact that Schweikert voted against the Patriot Act makes him a real patriot to anyone who cares about civil liberties and the Constitution. His stature has just been elevated in my book and may just get my vote.

I have also noticed Mommy isn't letting Ben do his own commercials anymore, I wonder why?

I like Sen. McCain even though we disagree on some issue. I likely would vote for him again.

I don't like Ben Quayle and won't vote for him.

Do people REALLY vote for a candidate based on endorsements?

I really hate to say this as both candidates make me taste bile, but this sort of pushes me toward Schweikert.  McCain and Kyl aren't exactly representative of anything right and good in this country and they're both ridiculous when they claim to deplore character assassination when Quayle has been doing that to Obama since he ran for office in the first place.

@MaskedMagician1967 me proud of AZ's elected people.. LoL in your dreams McLAME. I have not been proud of any of my elected officals, except for Janet Napoliatano and Gabby Giffords for the most part. There are a few others ....

AZ is the worst represented state in the US. Kyl, Mclame as senators? really these too jerks deserve to be stripped of their seats and sent pack in November.

@shadeaux14 lol yeah really. As if the Cheating thing isn't bad enough.. he picked Sarah Failin as his running mate!

@Tommy_Collins are you aware of the whole Charles Keating thing? I guess that most people in AZ don't give a shit about that tho.

I voted for McCain in the past, for both Congress and Senate, but now he for the most part comes across as a pandering old fool.

@guestI strongly doubt that Sen McCain is currently considered "one of us" these days, following the announcement by Babeu of his alternative life style. I don't expect a stamp of approval by the senator for Babeu. I just wish the senator had the gumption to 'disapprove' of Babeu as he does of Schweikert....

@StegsNewton You may be right, of course.  But ole Barry did not

suffer fools gladly and if some twit like Danny Quayle was spouting non-

sense, he would not hesitate to tell him to sit down and shut up.

@ptcgaz McCain actually said Ryan was a good pick for VP, I mean seriously, who in their right mind would believe someone who choose St Sarah as VP, about anything? The pandoras box that was Palin, has left us with the teabaggers, fer crips sake. Yeah, who ya gonna trust, McCain? Vote dem in November!

@ptcgaz "Most people" didn't live here at the time, and those that did weren't paying attention. The dumbing down of America and Arizona has been a flaming success!

@ptcgazNo, I'm not. I have been in Arizona since late August of 2004. Thus I wasn't aware...

@Tommy_Collins As an Independent who requested a Republican primary ballot in order to head off the crazy, this is a difficult decision for me to have to make.  Even though there are more options on the ballot than these two, voting for any of the others will only split the vote and the worst will likely take the win.

This has been a huge challenge for me, trying to decide which one is worse...lol

@aznative818 I wouldnt believe anything McLame says since he's a liar, a bribe taker, and HE choose Sarah Falin....

ptcgaz

@aznative818 I suppose so. I wouldn't have known about it without having known the guy that ratted on Keating...

FYI I didn't live here at the time. I live in PA, however I know about it, so that is no excuse FOR the dumbasses that live in AZ at the time, unless of course they didn't care.

@Tommy_Collins I have lived here since 01 and I knew about it. Course it helped that my neighbor from Cincinnati testified against Charles Keating.

Where's the pod?

@TaxpayingVoter for me with all GOP it's simple, I can't vote for any of them, in primaries I would have trouble picking which one is more insane, because sometimes GOP voters vote the most insane person. And most of the time THEY ignore bribes, affairs, crimes, etc when they vote.. so.. I really don't know.
