Wil Cardon Called for Jailing People Who Hired Undocumented Immigrants

Over the weekend, the Arizona Republic took a look at Republican U.S. Senate candidate Wil Cardon's record of being a "job creator," in which he's repeatedly claimed that he's created "hundreds of jobs."

Turns out, the Republic found Immigration and Customs Enforcement records stating that a bunch of the employees of Subway restaurants Cardon was involved with were alleged to be "undocumented alien workers."

According to what Cardon told ousted state Senate President Russell Pearce, people who hire "illegal aliens" ought to go to jail.

"...[W]ould you advocate for jail time and big fines for those who knowingly hire illegal aliens andtake jobs that deprive jobs for Americans?" Pearce asked Cardon on his radio show.

"I know I gave a lot of other answers to what the caller just called in about, but in short, yes, I think we ought to enforce the laws on the books," Cardon said. "We ought to not be playing games. That's why people want to come to this country, that's why we are such a great country, because we obey the rule of law."

Now, Cardon says he had nothing to do with hiring illegal immigrants -- it's just another one of those "liberal media" things from the Republic.

From Cardon's response:

The Republic attack takes great pains to paint Wil as the manager of RCC Partners, a company which paid a small fine to ICE in 2009. The facts? RCC is one of hundreds of investments Wil has made in a business career spanning two decades. Together with his family, he owns a piece of a company that, together with other companies, owns RCC. RCC owns Subway stores across the state. Wil doesn't run these stores. He doesn't do the hiring and firing. He doesn't examine the I-9s of line employees. And he has no involvement in the stores' daily operations. End of story - except to say that Wil's experience with RCC has driven home for him the need to secure our border and to expand the federal e-verify system, to give employers the resources they need to ensure they're not being defrauded by illegal immigrant job applicants.

One of the Subway franchises part-owned by Cardon was fined for regulations related to documentation.

Sadly -- at least, in Cardon's mind -- none of the higher-ups went to jail.

The clip from Cardon's appearance on Pearce's show can be found below:

I have got to object to you Coz, cous', 'cuz all people who run for a political office or work in a political office are not liars. Not everybody is a bad guy. Some folks in politics are the folks trying to defeat the a--holes. My wife and i, Beth & Mikel Weisser, are both candidates in western AZ and neither of us are liars. Beth is running for state senate in LD 5 and I am running for US House of Representatives for Congressional District 4. We are in fact running to force jerks like Cardon (or in our cases Nancy McLain, Ron Gould and Paul Gosar) out of office.  Cardon is a scumbag, indulging in slave labor at the same time he demonizes his workforce and all for profit and political gain among a--holes and jerks who like their exploitation southern fried. There have to be some good guys; but you are right, there are lots of liars and lots of a--holes. Of course, now that you know that Coz, you've got to get going yourself, Cous' and do your own part to throw the bums out, 'cuz--

Mr. Cardon....please try not to make the same mistake Mr. Kelly  made by pointing a finger at his rival.  People do not care to  listen to tattle tales but wish to know what you DO stand for.  I do believe had Mr. Kelly spoke more of what he DOES stand for he would be Arizona's Senator by now.  I find these games sophomoric and cheapening.  Just state what you believe and leave the gossip to the coffee klatch do-nothings.

U people are the most blatantly partisan "newspaper" around, u make William hurst smile in his grave. Media is about reporting! Using subjective adjectives is not reporting its commenting! I'm a democrat but I despise the use of propaganda, regardless of the opposing party's tactics. Take the upper road! Why is it okay to write articles w a political agenda when religious opinion articles are non-existent? Are they both not arenas of intense emotion in which it is rare to change another's mind? If u do an article on the problems w one candidate, do an article on the other candidate as well! Isn't that the idea behind freedom of speech and press? Don't u want people to be given all the info and make an educated decision on their own? Media should be about informing the general public not persuading them. People will respect u as true journalists and u will sell more papers! Stop hiring writers who majored in political science and hire journalists and writers. It is the job of a politician to boost him or herself and discredit their opponent, if that is their chosen tactic. U are supposed to REPORT on the comings and goings of both sides. Your writers would make abysmal scientists

Russell Pearce asking Cardon this question is a joke. Pearce is the one who will boast to anyone within earshot that he was the author of Arizona's Employer Sanctions law. Cardon should have asked Herr Pearce why - when Pearce wrote the law - he didn't create stiffer sanctions for employers caught hiring illegal immigrants.  Including, as Mr Pearce now asks for, jail time. And, why Pearce didn't close the loopholes that exist that allow this to continue, either at the time of writing the law or in later years, particularly when Pearce's power rose, the Tea Party took a supermajority in the AZ Legislature AND the Supreme Court validated Employer Sanctions. Of course, if Pearce answered honestly and told him it was because he needed Cardon and people like him that employ illegal immigrants to contribute to his campaign....... What a bunch of fucking hypocrites.
