Valerie Topete Put Beer in Her Kid's Sippy Cup, Cops Say; 2-Year-Old Fell From Chair

Valerie Topete, 36, was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of giving her 2-year-old beer in a sippy cup.

A Phoenix woman was arrested on Tuesday after witnesses at Peter Piper Pizza saw her 2-year-old kid fall out of his chair -- possibly because he was drunk.

Valerie Topete, 32, was at the pizza parlor in Chandler in the evening when -- a witness told police -- she poured beer from a pitcher into the tot's sippy cup, set the cup in front of him and walked away. The kid fell off the chair not long after, leading the witness to conclude that the child may have been intoxicated.
Topete 'fessed up to spiking her kids apple juice when cops arrived at the scene.

In a child-rearing method that reminds us Kristopher Harvey's "give-'em-shots-'til-they-puke" program from last month, Topete claimed that giving the kid beer was "reverse psychology" to make him stop grabbing for the pitcher. Of course, such a plan wouldn't work if the kid actually liked the stuff, but we imagine Topete didn't think it out that far.

Topete also admitted that she'd seen the kid drink from the sippy cup. A cop saw that the cup contained about four ounces of liquid, a frothy head and a strong smell of alcohol.

Mother-and-son were taken to a hospital, where the kid was evaluated for possible alcohol ingestion and potential injuries from the fall. The booking sheet doesn't list the kid's BAC. Topete was arrested at the hospital and booked into jail. Police are seeking one count of child abuse.

Havent all our parents given us a sip of their wine or beer when we were kids. This is a clear case of the media and the Police Department trying to make a name forthemselves, Just leave the mother alone.  I am certain, they do not know this woman, what type of mother she is and I am certain the child was not intoxicated or in danger

The hype that this has generated is absurd! Clearly not a case of 'child abuse'. Definitely agree that you need to know more about the mother and the story...the entire story. Totally sensationalized!

The Phoenix Police department have had a tough year and they have taken this way out of context. I was there, so let me be very clear the child was NEVER IN A HIGH CHAIR AND THE CHILD NEVER FELL. This again is just shotty Police work and something has to be done with the Phoenix Police department. This story has gone way to far and when This case gets dropped cause of lack of evidence I hope the media says SORRY TO VALERIE.

I'm thinking that a person really needs to know more about the mother, and her child raising, than a supposed one time deal of her feeding the kid a small amount of beer.  Seems like a trip to the pokey, and child abuse charge might be a bit of over kill, depending......

I'm surprised the cops passed up the opportunity to arrest the kid for public intoxication.    Clearly he can't handle his alcohol.    But being only two years old you have to cut him slack.   At least he didn't run around naked, chasing the female employees.
