This was the scene outside of the school near the Unidad Deportiva sports complex.
Six people -- including one police officer-- were killed in a shootout last Thursday in Puerto Peñasco, a.k.a. Rocky Point.

The Sonoran city 200 miles south of Phoenix was once a very popular vacation destination for American families -- but violence has caused many to steer clear of Rocky Point. This latest episode of violence will only exacerbate the city's tattered image.

Gunfire erupted near a school close to the city's sports complex, Unidad Deportiva, according to local Mexican news sources cited in a report by the Tucson Sentinel. Police responded to the shots at approximately 6 p.m. Thursday evening and found three men dead.

The three men were suspected drug traffickers and had been engaged in a shootout with a rival group.

Police pursued the vehicle of the presumed rival traffickers, and a gunfight broke out. One of the suspects was killed. Three officers were hit, and one of them died.

As many as 12 people were injured and brought to local hospitals, the report says.

But, as New Times reported last year, Rocky Point hospitals can be dangerous places.

Assassins failed to kill a man in March of 2011 after letting off 35 rounds into his car during a high-speed chase, and the man was later murdered at the hospital while getting treated for his injuries.

We went to Rocky Point recently, we saw people that looked like Law enforcement scattered on the side of the road, staring at us, smiling with HIGH Powered automatic rifles in Vests, we also saw 2 trucks (Pickups) with High Powered large caliber machine guns mounted to the roofs, they had ski masks covering their faces, all in black, they also stared at use driving slowely by our campsite, they looked more like terrorists than federales.

We drove in town only to be tailgated by locals that seemed to want us to bump into them, rear end them, or get in an accident as they drove so close and tailgated us, ie. Accident hunters! The roads are full of potholes, torn up, falling apart, and rough, going by the railroad tracks people hundreds of them are living in cardboard house, with tarps for roofs, and plywood walls at best.

But hey, have a few drinks, stick to your hotel, or campsite and as long as you got a good buz, all is great.. right. as long as your drunk!

PS. What a DUMP! and wait now you can get hit with a stray bullet from one of these armed law enforcement or federals

Wasn't there 12 people killed and 58 shot in a killing rampage in Colorado over the weekend? In the United States? Wow. Maybe We shouldn't visit Colorado anymore. There were six shootings in Phoenix last week. By American citizens, not 'illegals." Does the State Department issue a warning letting Mexican nationals know that it is not safe to visit or migrate to Arizona due to the weekly violence? Hell, maybe its not safe to step into a movie theater either in the US. I can't remember the last time Mexico reported a mass slaying at a cinema. I've been visiting Mexico for 25 years now without an incident. Blacks, Chinese and Filipinos were not responsible because, like the "White" Americans, a few bad apples are busy putting slugs into their fellow countrymen.

um....bobg7.....they weren't "illegals" as they are Mexicans IN Mexico, and um.....no Americans were killed.

I see the illegals are at again as usual killing and wounding innocent Americans.  Go ahead people keep saying that Americans are not being killed by illegal aliens and this article will prove you wrong!  I doubt that blacks, Chinese or even Filipinos were responsible.

@bobg7 Rocky Point is in Mexico. No Americans were involved in the shoot out, 54 Americans were killed by an illegal American in Colorado, though. We need to do something about illegal Americans...

Rocky point is as safe if not safer than phoenix. I have been going there for years and never have had a problem with the law or the people. Just there in april and had a great time. People in their own countries are not illegals bob.
