Joe Arpaio Looks Like Tired, Old Racist on Stand During Racial-Profiling Trial

Sheriff Joe Arpaio during his recent "Birther" press conference.
Stanley Young, the lawyer for five people suing the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office for racial profiling, is doing a good job making Sheriff Joe Arpaio look like a racist this morning.

Following testimony earlier in the morning from a deputy, Arpaio took the stand, starting off with the disclaimer that he had a touch of the flu. The sheriff didn't appear to be at his sharpest as he struggled to flip through binders to find various exhibits.

Under pointed questioning by Young, Arpaio denied that he equated brown-skinned people with illegal immigrants, as a press release from 2007 demonstrates he did. Young took time to go over a letter received by Arpaio from an anti-immigrant group in which Arpaio had emphasized statements about how police shouldn't be afraid to check the status of day laborers. And Young played a video from another press conference in which Arpaio said he'd have a "pure" program that went after illegal immigrants first, and their suspected crimes second.

But the sheriff made his worst impressions while answering questions about his book, Joe's Law.

Basically, anytime Arpaio was shown some of the blatant bigotry in that book, he blamed it on co-author Len Sherman. And this was despite being read back his testimony from a previous deposition in which he'd said he didn't need to read his own book because he'd written it himself.

Arpaio was forced by Young to back off from a couple of statements in the book, including one in which he wrote that Mexicans don't come to the United States with the same hopes and dreams as people from other countries.. In another part of the book, Young pointed out, Arpaio wrote that second- and third-generation Mexican-Americans were not part of the American "mainstream."

"My co-author wrote that," Arpaio blurted out.

The morning break is about to end, and we're going back in the courtroom to hear more from this bloodbath

Ahh, but the strawberries that's... that's where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt and with... geometric logic... that a duplicate key to the wardroom icebox DID exist, and I'd have produced that key if they hadn't of pulled the Caine out of action. I, I, I know now they were only trying to protect some fellow officers...

Funny how Joke gets the "flu" whenever he has to testify.  And when under oath, the "toughest sheriff" becomes all quiet and meek.

Fuck Arpiao.  When all these old school racist crackers die off from old age...it will be a good thing for this country.

Arpaio looks OLD and TIRED and GNARLY and BLOATED.  And the "brown flu" symptoms yet again?  In my opinion, citizens of Maricopa County deserve to find out if he is actually fit to continue in that office.  Here's my bet:  HE'S NOT FIT FOR THE OFFICE.  And the tag "lawman" that is being used in other media outlets to describe him?  HARDLY.  He couldn't pass the basic training.  He appears to be increasingly out of it.  Between his lack of recall of events, his confusion over text in a book he previously took credit for writing and his stammering and stalling over very straightforward previous testimony he gave, it is pretty obvious that this old buffoon needs to be put out to pasture. I'd also bet he couldn't pass a basic aptitude test at this point.

ARPAIO equals FAIL.

Mr. Stern, Well done. You made us feel the questions and Arpaio's responses. Almost like being there. Great public service. The people have waited years for this day.

I wish you people would read a dictionary and learn what the terms racism and bigotry mean!  They mean DIFFERENT things!!!  A person can be a bigot but may not be a racist.  A racist feels that a certain "race" is inferior and should be treated differently.  Hispanics and Latinos (even IF they are from Mexico) are not a "race."  They are an "ethinc group."  One can not be a racist because they are bigoted against an ethinic group.  An ethinic group is NOT a race of people.  There are white hispanics and latinos, there are black hispanics and latinos, there are brown ones and yellow ones too.  Please stop adding to the confusion in this discussion - that's what the bigots (and racists) want - confusion and ignorance.  Please don't help them.

Arpaio is a bigot - he feels people from a certain citizens from an ETHINIC GROUP (hispanics/Latinos) are inferior and not deserving of the same rights as other people are (e.g., he advocates violating the right of every citizen to be free from unreasonable search and seizure).

With regard to people who are in this country without proper immigration status - I agree with him.  They should be stopped and questioned and, if appropriate, reported to ICE.   ICE will then determine if it wants to get involved or not - that is the proper role of our government.  However, we have to hold Arpaio to a standard that keeps the Constitution front and center in his mind when enforcing our laws.  If he is advocating his deputies to violate the rights of citizens in his search for illegal immigrants - he should be taken to the woodshed, and he is.  Albeit a little too late for a number of our fellow citizens who have had their rights taken away by this bigoted asshole.

Mr. Stern, I will assume that the MCSO shurf couldn't convince the judge to come to the sheriff's office to talk about this little annoyance, yes? He normally invites his detractors to his 19th floor office so he can talk at them from behind his desk, with some of his ummmmm..... "employees" standing by in case of emergency (limited only by the imagination).

Yes, the old guy wasn't smart enough, or savvy enough, to stop after his first term, as he had vowed to do when running for office in 1992.

Doesn't Joke get flu shots?  Another media source said he not only claimed he had the flu today, but did the same the day he was on the stand in the Thomas Disbarment.  That was why is was so slow doing or saying stuff!

I'd put my money on "very hung over along with going senile" myself.

they need to take the Joke down to the basement of his own jail. Would his goons turn on him?

Probably not... so then he should be sent to the federal "pound me in the ass" prison where he belongs.

Joe has narcissistic personality disorder which makes it impossible to admit he has done anything wrong. In his twisted mind, this is all a conspiracy by the media, La Raza, liberals, etc, etc. to get him. He really believes his bullshit. He will never take responsibility for his actions.

We should have set up a pool for how many times Joe would say "I don't recall." As a tie breaker, we could have had the closest guess to how many times he'd say "Someone else handled that." As for Joe writing a book, did anyone actually believe that? Writing a book, even a bad one, is a lot of work and time. Joe, media whore that he is, couldn't possibly have stayed away from the cameras, microphones, and press conferences that long... even if he could string more than three words together in a coherent sentence.

He didn't have any problem signing copies of his now supposedly ghostwritten books when the mouth breathers went to see him at his book signings. But this isn't the first time this doddering hypocrite has disavowed the books that make him money.

If Justice prevails in this Racial Profiling case Arpaio won't be Jailed or Fined, however I think the Little Nasty Racist Arpaio should be put in a Black, White, and Pink stripped M.C.S.O. Jumpsuit, shackled, and forced to march from his Down Town Office down the same five mile route that he marched all Hispanic's in front of National Media a couple of years ago.

Racist Arpaio should then be forced to look in the eyes, and apologise to the over three hundred Hispanic Children whose  Parents reported to his office that the Children had been abused, and Arpaio intentionally ignored their cases because their skin was Brown!

There is a "Warm Corner" Waiting for Joe Arpaio.

Soon Arpaio will be able to Lie under Oath to his Maker.

To: Justice.

@OnlyInArizona Arpaio's book has been improperly placed in the "Law" book section of Barnes and Noble. It is NOT a Law book!  Who is responsible for that book placement?

@fairymagic13 Arpaio is a racist. Racism -- as are many other "isms" -- is about oppression. Without a doubt, Arpaio is systematically oppressing (or causing the oppression of) people who are latino/hispanic and are not totally European in appearance. Remember: There is only one race -- the HUMAN race. Every other distinguishing physical characteristic between groups of humans can be linked to ethnicity and/or geographical region of ancestry. One can indeed be a racist if he or she is bigoted against an ethnic group. Arpaio is both a bigot and a racist.

@fairymagic13 Your comment is spot on.

and to think those of us who want to ensure constitutional rights are upheld for all people on american soil are some how lawless anarchists is asinine.

the constitution applies to all people inside of our boarders, and while immigration is an issue we should not be giving up our constitutional rights to deal with it.

I'd like to see them come down on businesses.  When I was a waiter at P.F Changes someone at Sauce around the corner started working on my social security number.  They started after I left changs.

The police were absolutely no help, would not provide information about what the employers used to hire the guy and stopped returning my phone calls.

It was disgusting, Ive dealt with it with the IRS for the last two years and it''s a pain.

I've been effected by identity theft in a questionable circumstance and the police simply did not care about me.

They said the employee worked two years and no longer worked there,  they could do nothing else.  And this is with our employer sanction law.

@Dital That type of misuse of the English might make you feel good but it causes confusion.  There ARE real racists out there - J.T. Ready was one. Hitler and all his followers were.  The KKK is.  As well as the 10s 0f 1000s of people currently taking part in the militia movement in the United States.  However, Arpaio is going after an Ethinic Group, not a race.  Hispanic/Latino is NOT a race.  It is an Ethnic Group.  Now if you're going to say that he's going after Hispanic/Latino of NATIVE AMERICAN descent - THEN you would be correct.  But most Hispanics/Latinos don't want to be associated with Native Americans because of the way the counties in Central and South America (and North America) treat the indigenous peoples there.  Actually there's a LOT of racism against Native Americans by Hispanic / Latino people AND whites.  I agree with you that IN REALITY there are no races and we are all one race.  However, RACSISTS don't believe that and the government doesn't either - just check out the Census for a second.  Bigotry is the problem in this case and we should fight that - Racism is a lot different, and more organized and complex aproblem.
