Our new commenting platform
Dear Readers,

You may have noticed that we've installed a new commenting system on our site. Comments from our old system may not appear at the moment, but they're being uploaded and will reappear shortly. The new system, called Livefyre, takes the place of Disqus and has several new features. Read on to see what you can expect from the new platform.

SocialSync:

When conversation is happening about an article on Facebook or Twitter, you can now see that conversation within the commenting thread. You can also tag and import your friends from Twitter and Facebook within the comment stream yourself.

True Real Time:

You can see who is listening to a conversation and read comments in real time, making it easier to jump right into the discussion.

Notifications:

You can choose to be alerted via e-mail when someone replies to or likes your comment.

One Platform:

My Voice Nation is a global-profile system for all our properties. Soon, you'll be able to follow your favorite authors and news topics, giving yourself a customized experience of our sites. Starting today, your My Voice Nation profile is linked with your Livefyre account as one log-in. You don't need a My Voice Nation account to write a review on Voice Places and a separate Disqus account to comment on our stories. Your My Voice Nation is your one account for everything.

Follow Your Friends:

You'll be able to see what your friends are saying and doing on our publications and Voice Places now with this one account.

Easy Sign Up:

To sign up, just click "Sign in" in the new comments section. You can sign up with Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Google or e-mail.

Note the many deficiencies of the new Livefyre comment system vs. DISQUS --

1) Cannot EDIT posts, to correct errors or mistakes. Livefyre speciously claims that allowing editing would affect discussion continuity -- but they allow DELETING the entire post, which breaks any continuity.

2) Message THREADING is limited to only 2 replies! -- After that, reply branching stops and all additional comments are simply stacked in a single pile. This absurd dysfunction makes robust discussions with multiple users impossible to follow. That's so Web 1.0.

3) MOBILE integration FAILS completely. Does not function with mobile platforms.

4) Claims to offer REAL TIME updates of Messages and posting Activity -- Numerous user activity profiles are stuck and frozen DAYS in the past, with only a fraction of their posts, or posts of friends being followed, showing in profiles / activity log.

5) "Follow that Story" fails completely. No new posts to stories being followed appear in a user's activity profile.

6) Clicking on another User's icon to view their profile often times mistakenly links to your own profile / activity.

7) Way too much emphasis on Twitwit and Failbook. Are tweenagers their target market?

Was this system even Beta tested before implementation across the entire Village Voice network?

... "real time" updating ??

... all old DISQUS posts will be restored to all old stories in a few hours ???

LOL!

VOICE NATION SUX!  You won't let me have the name I have been using here for eons.  Why?  You won't let me contact you privately about it because you present interminable validation codes which for some strange reason I can't ever get right.  Really?  VOICE NATION is more like a voice silencer.  Plus some of us aren't TWIT MY FACE SPACE PLACE PEOPLE.

Clearly, the restoration of old comments is not working well.  That is an issue for me.  I had a lot of "bookmarks" to articles here with comments to refer to, like who voted for and against the $260,000 pay out to Pearce for his "recall expenses".  Well, yes, I can probably go out on google or bing and find the info, but I had it tucked away, and unless the comments get restored, those bookmarks I have are useless.

Don't like it. It's very, very glitchy and i don't use theis system for anything else. I on't be commenting much in the future as this is just a PITA. Bring back DISQUS, please!

I may be the only one who is actually having GOOD luck with this system...lol

I like it better than the old one.  It's more efficient, although I think that perhaps the color of the text on the Like and Reply buttons should probably be a TAD darker.

Tried signing in with Yahoo. Usually it times out. Is this the end for these forums?

I do not like facebook or twitter and do not like my comments connected. I would like them to stay on this paper only. This is a bad move. People are not on face book for good reasons. And they should have their privacy protected from that. Lucy Babeu

Well, that was a major pain in the @ss. Now all I have to do is remember this for three different computers.

I'm not crazy about it, but I've only made a few posts.  I know the last time they changed from whatever they were using to Disqus, it took some getting used to.  I'm sure we'll all get used to this too.

At least they aren't forcing us to Facebook like azcentral is doing!  I do not - and WILL not - use Facebook, so once they complete the change over, I'm outta there.  I'm sure that will make some people very happy.  LOL.

I just hope the new system won't ignore my sign in and make me post as though I were a guest like the last one did.  Only occasionally did it recognize my account.

I am sure there is value to this new commenting system... but I don't like it. I had to create an account to leave comments, whereas before I already had the account and could choose where I wanted to comment from. Like I said, I am sure it is valuable and provide something for you guys... but as a reader and a frequent commenter, I don't like it.

What was the reason for the change?

NotZnany

@wherewasi A lot of comments related to Elizabeth A… Hawkenson and Whitaker the Pimp – the newest ones – are still missing ; I think they are lost… (I’ill repost them !…)

@SeedyWard nope. I just went ahead and went to villegevoice nation and signed up via their site with my yahoo account. I couldnt get it to work either :(

@wherewasi Yeah, I won't be commenting over there once everything is Facebook, either.

I like my privacy, especially since I engage in politics in a state with loonies  without self control who might come after me.

It still isn't putting my profile photo in.  *sigh*

Oh, well.

@rickyleepotts Actually, you can post "anonymously" (bottom right of the popup), and it asks for only the same stuff as the old system.

@WhoKnows Livefyre has more features than Disqus.

@TaxpayingVoter and some of us, like me are fucking very outspoken AND I don't want certain people, not mentioning any names to figure out who I really am.

rickyleepotts
rickyleepotts

@WhoKnows I don't want to do that. I want to use my DISQUS account. This seems like a lot more work for the average user. Just my initial response.

ptcgaz
ptcgaz

@justme that's why I use Yahoo... I doubt Yahoo knows who I really am, like Facebook somehow was able to guess who I was after about a month.

ptcgaz

@kplo actually it has less. I can't use my yahoo account to sign in.

@kplo But are they features that most people care about?

@kspidel It still didn't work for that photo but I uploaded a new one and now it works.  :)

@rickyleepotts Maybe but I like that I can use single-sign on and just click to log in rather than typing my username and password each time.

@WhoKnows Am I « most people » ? I don’t care about those new features ; comments are now illegible.
