Glendale Cop Shoots and Kills Man Who Allegedly Drove a Stolen Car at Him

A Glendale police officer shot and killed a man Saturday after the man drove a stolen car straight at him, police say.

Glendale Officer Justin Penrose fired at Kenneth Girardot, 38, after Girardot attempted to drive away from what started as traffic stop, then drove at Penrose, according to police.

Girardot initially attempted to avoid Penrose when the officer first signaled for him to pull over near 59th Avenue and Camelback Road, but he eventually pulled over into a parking lot of a nearby Jack in the Box a few streets over, according to police.

During the stop, Penrose took information from Girardot and his passenger, 39-year-old Raymond Flores. Penrose ran the information of the two men and the vehicle, discovered the vehicle was stolen, and called for back-up.

When Girardot saw a backup officer approaching the scene, he began to "aggressively" move the vehicle back and forth to get out of his parking spot.

Penrose yelled to Girardot to stop moving the vehicle, police say, but Girardot ignored him and continued -- until the car was pointed right at Penrose and headed right for him, police say. At that point, Penrose shot at the car, killing Girardot.

Flores was brought in for questioning, and was eventually arrested on an outstanding warrant.

"Right or wrong or whatever, the truth, that's what we want. Did he have to kill my son? What happened there?" Girardot's father told ABC15. "I am just looking to figure out what happened here. There were things that went bad."

Girardot's father acknowledged that his son struggles with a heroin addiction.

It's unclear how fast the vehicle was moving towards Penrose prior to him firing. Glendale police did not immediately return a call for comment.

Penrose is on paid leave.

you have no idea who my son was....the cops has told us at least 5 diffrerent stories...this one makes six...and if you had bother to look at the photos you'd see the car was against the cop car..plus when they took the passengar out of the car if my son was not cooperating they could have tased him...my son was a very good hearted person.,..he helprd people he didn't know...like homeless people...he would buy them sodas or something to eat...he woula also help elderly people  do yard work...as far as the car is concerned it was stolen 2 months ago ...he did not steal it ...and if there  is any a-hole here it is you jerk

You people don't know what you are talking about. You didn't even know Kenneth Girardot. I know he wouldn't have done that. I also know that all police officers are not nice. I seen a police officer slam my son on the ground for no good reason and they called him all sorts of names too. That is not part of a police officers job (or shouldn't be anyway). I don't think you people would be thinking way to go if it was your family that got shot.

@ACAB No actually the parasites are the people who disobey the law and put officers lives in danger.  It is just too bad there aren't more officer-involved shootings like this one.  Simple logic says that if you threaten the life of an officer you can be shot.  Good job officer now go out and get some more.

i would think you wouldn't want someone killed...if you are that kind of person...then what goes around comes around

@wrg55at2 Oh, was it your son who was shot by police?  Well sir, if your son had not been high on drugs, had not been driving a stolen car and had complied with the officer's orders to stop and had not made an aggressive move towards police, he would not have been shot.

@anonymous Of course police officers are not nice when a suspect is aiming their stolen vehicle at them.

@wrg55at2 "I only know what I read in the papers."  If the person

shot was indeed your son, I am truly sorry for your loss.  Then again, if

the account of the incident as reported by Glendale PD and the writer of

this article is accurate, then really what could that cop have done dif-

ferently under the circumstances?

looki jerk you did not know my son...all you are  going by is what the cops say...look at the photos at the scene and you will see that the car could not have been going toward the cop...you also did not know my son...he was terrified of guns...and i have a witness that said he was begging the cop to put his gun  down....my son never carried weapons...some cops are just trigger happy...and no one knows if he was high at all...in fact he had an appointment on tuesdat(yesterday)to get on methadone so he could get his life back together...mkaybe this will happen to one of your family members...then you will know what we are going through

 @wrg55at2 It's heartbreaking whenever a parent

has to bury a child.  Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

look at the photos on the channel 15 web site and you will see the car against the police car...and the other reports say he fired at my son before his backup aarrived...and according to a witness he was begging the cop to not  point the gun at him as he was terrified of guns even toy ones...my son had problems but he did alot of good things too...
